Need your help with this one Dakka: What colour should I paint my landing pad? I'm aiming more for a civilian building, so a military green is out. I'm thinking the pad should be a distressed metallic colour, with weathered hazard stripes as details. All suggestions welcome!

Very nice work there, well thought out and nicely detailed, although in the image of the ruin with the sentry gun, it seems the base board is warping a bit, could that be due to the use of white glue for the texture?, if so you may be able to unwarp it by aplying more glue on the reverse side , and failing that perhaps mount it to a hard board base with hot glue.

Terrain making is actually my favorite part of the hobby, and one I will be delving into again very soon

Add my +1 for that Basilica, what did you use for the textured base, it looks fantastic.

I also really like the structure of that cathedral, looks like it would be a great playable environment (difficult to balance modelling with playability with some structures), it'd be nice to see it just one level higher tho.

Unfortunately, I didn't take any earlier WIP shots. Its the old ruins you could get in 4th Ed and a FW sentry turret in building, with various odds and ends bulking it out. There is enough space on both the ruin sections and the floor to house IG HW teams- which may have been the plan!

Thanks; the textured base is just polyfiller (used for filling holes in walls) layered on thick, with sand poured over it when its still wet. The brick sections are scored foamboard and theres all sorts of bitz pressed in there.

Yeah, the base warped when I applied the polyfiller- its only minor, but noticeable. Thanks for the advice on how to rectify it!

For the landing pad I would go a bone color. I'm thinking kinda stucco colored.

I really like your cities of death buildings, it is always nice to see more of them and how other people assemble them. As for the landing pad, if you want a civilian type building I would go with some shade of gray(rockcrete), the hazard stripes would be a nice touch as well. Keep up the good work!

For the landing pad, maybe some orange and yellow, those have always seemed civilian colors to me.

Wow, just wow! The buildings are sweet. But I can't believe no one complimented the vulture. I think the nose art is absolutley fantastic!

Updates! Thanks to Maj.Winters, Stretch, and Captain Klunk for their suggestions for the pad.

After some deliberation, I primed the Landing Pad white, then painted a thin line of black ink just under each ledge of the Bastion. I then took a new brush, put a whole load of water on, and let the black ink run naturally down the building. Quite pleased with the effect- gives it a naturally worn look.

(Sorry about the pics, if anyone can tell me how to rotate them, I will be very grateful indeed.)

The question now is: How should I paint the pad supports? Leave them white, or perhaps metallic? Should the blast shields copy whatever colour they are? Answers and any other comments in the box at the bottom of the page please!

I think a grey or dark metallic would look good for supports.

Grey/mettalic supports. although i do like the idea of the pad being bone coloured, could look good with a heavy brown/black wash (about 3:1 I would say)

Grey as in reproducing the technique on the tower? That would keep continuity I suppose...

Its been a while, but I've had my weekends sucked up by Drama rehearsals (directing actors is hard!).

I'm particularly pleased with the weathering on the chevrons:



Tinbitz, followed by a layer of boltgun metal over the top. May add a spot of chainmail to bring it out a bit more, before hitting it with a black wash.

Finally, a Valk atop the pad:

A thin highlight of Chainmail or Silver would be a good idea. The landing pad is beautiful, otherwise.

The weathering on the pad is particularly stunning! I love the paint for the vulture and valkyries as well!
