Hi. I want to begin an army of the Privateer Press kind, i've looked in to a lot of background material and the actual armies. BUT i'm still not sure of which army to collect and game with! So here's a question for the forum:

Why do you collect your warmachine/hordes army?

Are you asking why we have chosen specific factions?- as in, what attracted us to particular factions(Khador, Cygnar, etc.)?

I had a hard debate between Cryx and Menoth. Cryx are insanely fast assasination focused models. Menoth uses unique buffs and rabid beat down.

I ended up going with Menoth because I just love an army thats obsessed with setting stuff on fire. "FIRE! heh heh heh heh FIRE!"

When the Axe comes down just pray your face isn't beneath it.

I started with Mercs because I love that I have such a large variety or unique and characterful models at my disposal.

I started a Cygnar for because I really liked a couple of the casters (eNemo and Darius) and thought a tiered list for both would be fun.

Wanted to do jack heavy list. Went with Cryx 'cause I like their jacks the best. Almost went Cygnar for all the pistol wielding goodness (caine + gun mages) Trolls for Hordes as they had some of the coolest beasts (and I'm going beast heavy)

Knowing more now, Mercs look like a lot of fun. But still, generally, it was all about the models for me.

Cryx are the penultimate bad guys in Warmachine (though they seem to have problems doing anything) while the Trolls are kinda the protaganists of hordes.

The Elves bug me (models wise) but I kinda like the idea of elves in this setting, so I'm looking at grabbing up some minion elves (especially Nyss Hunters as they work for Cryx & Trolls) but painting them up to look more normal as the blighted look doesn't do it for me.

I chose Cryx because I loved the models, I chose Circle Orboros because I liked the idea of 'wold' constructs.

I chose Khador when I first got into the game because I liked their models and background the best. I've tried to escape it but their aggressive style suits me. I also have mercenaries because I like the idea of mercenaries in fantasy settings and some of the models are great. I've been tempted to build everything due to some models or piece of background story though.

i chose khador for the models, and the simplicity of the faction. i KEEP playing because the game is more tactical (IMO) then 40k. i find myself thinking more, and i relish my wins (and losses) alot more in warmachine then in 40k.

There ain't nearly enough Salvage in this thread!

Exactly. I started WM as a side game to 40K, now my GW models are in storage!

Same thing happened to me, I still love the warhammer 40k models and fluff but as games go I just find them less than challenging.

I always play the same buddy and don't have a LGS anymore. We tried a few other games then 40K and Fantasy and we found them nicer for a change of pace.

Then warmachine was brought back to view. We had the battlebox for ages, but never expanded on it because we where too much into 40k and I still went to a FLGS. After trying it again we just got hooked and now we play nothing else. It is just the gamestyle that makes it fun.

We are both casual players, but I like to try something powerfull once in a while. He is a bit more laid back about it all and just uses what he feels like or he has painted up nicely.

Despite this he gets the win from me regularly. It's mostly when I get to greedy or blow a chance for assasination, but he can sometimes stumble onto good combo's with a strange list...It keeps the game more exciting IMHO...

Khador because I like big bad jacks. How can you compete with a jack named the Beast?!? Also, after looking more into the fluff, their backround is very interesting.

I started warmachine because I was convinced to by a friend who wanted to avoid some of GW's business strategies and his argument that the rules were far clearer. I found that so far those arguments appear to be true. I also love Warmachine because a battle with four models can be extremely enjoyable, and because the ability to micromanage and tweak almost every stage of the action seems to leave a lower degree of the battles to chance, so like a previous post said, the wins are more gratifying and the losses more impactful (I'm 6-2 in games so far, and I find that losses linger with me more because they were clearly due to tactical decisions I made; even if there was chance involved, there were a couple clear choices I could have made to make victory much more likely).

I collect Cygnar because
A) I wanted to pick an army my friends weren't picking so we had some variety
B) while some criticize the models for being too similar, I like how they are minutely different in an efficient way, which jives with the fluff
C) I like the tactical opportunities it offers and challenges that come with some of its shortcomings.

Armies played:(40K) Necrons, Chaos Space Marines, Da Orks! (WHFB) Warriors of Chaos, Bretonnia (Warmachine) Cygnar

I collect warmachine hordes because its awesome. I chose cryx for warmachine and legion of everblight for hordes and have a blast playing it, I just chose what I thought looked cool or like what I read about the army when deciding at first.

When i did Play WM, i started out with the aesthetic value of the models i wanted and went from there. to me if you don't like the way the model looks then you aren't going to enjoy them or playing them. From there i narrowed down my two choices on the play style i liked. Cygnar and Menoth, in the end i chose Menoth because it appealed to me in most of all the aspects that i wanted and liked, so much in fact that i became a PG for my area and enjoyed teaching the game to new players and just playing the game. But my FLGS closed down and there was no place to play in my area so after 3 months of searching and trying to get a following i just sold all my stuff on ebay and canceled my PG status. But enough of my ramblings. Chose what you like the look of most and weight the pros and cons of each army and then choose what you like from there.

I think there were three things that make Khador my favorite faction.
In order of influence...
1)backstory/fluff/appearance
2)faction theme"lightning"
3)unit abilities

That being said, I have a Mercs army and a Cygnar army(with Retribution on the way).

The fluff and sculpts are so good for all the factions- you just can't help but dabble in multiple armies!

I play mercs as I feel like I can relate to the whole underdog thing that some of the casters have going for them fluff wise. Plus I love the models. I have a special place in my heart for maggie ^ ^

I picked up Cygnar because I liked the trenchers and the ironclad, but sold them off because there wasn't enough other stuff to interest me.
I play trolls because I love the look of their beasts (seeing the mauler painted red here on dakka is what got me looking into PP, and the Earthborn Dire Troll preview just tipped me over completely).
I also love the Trollblood playstyle, because it's so different to any other army I play in any other system.

I'm thinking of moving into Legion for a completely different playstyle, and because I love all the warbeasts they have, and the blighted Ogrun. Not so hot on most of the elves, though the Legionaires are pretty cool, and I like Ryhas.

I hate to say it, but the links you provided were the reason I DIDN'T go with Menoth. (http://privateerpress.com/warmachine/gallery/the-protectorate-of-menoth/warcasters/harbinger-of-menoth was what almost got me to go Menoth...)

But as with all things, YMMV.

Well, I play WM and Hordes. And PP got me to play two armies that I Hate otherwise: Undead and Elves.

I have been playing Cryx since 2003 and what first drew me to them was the Slayer Helljack. I saw that bad boy and knew there was no going back. I also like that Cryx isn't your conventional undead; that it is heavily technological. Most undead you see in fantasy settings askew technology as a whole, but Cryx shoves steam pipes in almost anything they can.

I also play Legion of Everblight...Evil Elves. You don't understand. I HATE elves, but here I am playing an faction run by a rogue dragon and controlling most of a race of barbarian elves. Maybe that why I like LoE, like Cryx, the Nyss are not conventional elves but wholly unique to the IK.

I play both because I love the models and play styles.

See that? That thing just stuffed two other things into that bigger thing! What in Morrow's name is going on?"
