Here we go. After having been away from the hobby itself in quite a while, I've started to collect a marine force.
I have some scouts and a land raider so far that need painting, but for a leader I was inspired by the painting of Calgar relaxing on his throne.

Here is what I've come up with so far using old bits, plasticard and some greenstuff. It's still pretty rough WIP and is stuck together with blue-tac, but it gives a brief idea of where I'm heading:

I wanted to create a bigger marine in power armour or artificer armour. I was thinking maybe extending the thighs, again with a slice of plasticard like the shin plates, but not sure if this would make him too tall :S
Eventually they'll be greenstuff'd over like the back of the legs.

The back shot shows how i've tried to use existing parts and the bulk them up...

My greenstuff skills are pretty lacking, but I was hoping that when it's set/dried, that I can file and sand it down to give it a more uniform look. I'm still thinking about the arms, ideally two power fists/claws, maybe with underslung bolters ie Calgar. Plus lots of detailing to think about.

And to finish off, a scale shot next to a badly painted chaos marine and a really old white metal marine I found in an old bits box...

Mainly looking for feedback on thoughts or ideas for the arms. Do the thigh plates need extending before I greenstuff them? Also is the eagle belt buckle too big? I could find something smaller, but that matched the painting.

Thanks for reading!

Looking good. I wouldn't extend the thgighs any further since he looks tall enoguh, but I would fill in his waist a bit; he's lookign a tad anorectic . For the arms; a bionic arm would be cool; I think a servo-arm would make a great additional power fist.

A Squeaky Waaagh!!

Ok small update, went to work with some more greenstuff and bits... here is the result.

Filled out his lower chest, added some detail and changed the belt buckle.

I'm overall happy with him so far, especially given my very limited experience. However i'm already seeing small things I think I could do differently now I know some of the techniques. So I may end up using this as a "test bed" so to speak and eventually construct a 2nd version once i'm happy with how stuff works and goes together.

Here goes:

The chest is ok, but i think with thinner plasticard (think i only have 1mm) I could construct a better looking version.

The legs are fine, I may attempt to convert the unfilled thigh into an exposed bionic leg using the structure in place and added detail in between.

I think the shoulder pads came out well, but again I think i could do better, adding more detail such as a flange(?) on top more like the picture I took inspiration from.

The method for the GS collar was ok, but it needs to be bigger to give the impression of scale such as the picture of Calgar.

The arms are going to be a test as I see them being more of a focal point, so will attempt some test pieces to see what works.

I also see that I'll need some serious bits searching to come up with a better head, iconography and weapons.

Any criticism, suggestions or tips would be much appreciated!

Again, thanks for reading.

Brilliant work its really coming along, however I feel like his shoulders are a bit tacked on the side, the shoulder pads on most mariens tend to overlap the body to some degree. Other than that its exellent!

Ok small update. I'm currently waiting on some bits and bobs to arrive.

I've decided to attempt to magnatise his arms/weapons so i can field him as a Marneus Calgar "stand in" as well as a normal chapter master with stormsheild + hammer.

Talking of the hammer, this is what I managed to throw together (10 points to the people that know what it is inspired by...)

Still need to neaten it up, as well as add some "power conduits" linking it to his armour.

On my list of things to do:

Sort out the collar and head area, add some tubing.

Finish off the extra shoulder pads needed for the weapon swaps (waiting on magnetst).

Neaten up and finish off his chest with a Ultramarine symbol as in the picture of Calgar (waiting on new plasticard)

Complete the arms to hold the weapons / detail the shoulder joints with tubing.

Construct a stormshield as well as two powerfist/bolter combos (the bit i'm dreading!)

Work out how to base him.

I would be very grateful if anybody can offer any advice on constructing a power fist from scratch. 1st thoughts were a bulked up termie fist with fingers sculpted over guitar wire, but as my GS ability is low, i'm not sure how it will come out. Might just be a case of practice on that.

Once again, thanks for reading and I'll leave with a shot of him blutac'd for a scale shot.

Looking good, the model has advanced real nicely! For a bigger power fist, have you considered the new plastic venerable dread? You'd have to add a 5th finger, but sine you'd have a model, it should be feasible.

For the collar, use a IG vehicle acccessory sprue eagle; it'll add to that imperial feel and you can heat/bend it to fit the collar, or just use it to make a press mould.

Time for another update.

Spent some time adding details, trying to neaten him up and finishing the extra bits. But still got some little bits to finish off, such as Sulfuras (thunder hammer), etc.

He's evolved quite alot from my initial thoughts (no idea which chapter he is btw!). Power fists are a right pain to sculpt from scratch, so i'm leaving those plans for now. But as his arms are (well 1 is so far) will be magnetised, I can always come back to him if i can get hold of those dread fists as suggested.

The backpack didn't really come out as clean as I wanted and for the size increase, I may as well just have used a normal backpack! But oh well you live and learn...

Here's the shots:

I'm not even sure if he'll be used as I may be switching to a fantasy/40k Daemon army. But i'm still undecided. Still he cost £3 + bits I had lying around to make, so not too bad considering.

Finish with a better look:

Wow, you got quite some skills there, I really like the finished model! One suggestion though: have you considered mounting the gun on the forearm? the model seems to lend itself to custom weaponry, and I feel the gun would look a lot better if angled 90°. Right now, the barrels look a tad long, making the gun look unbalanced and a bit ungainly. OK for orks, but not for the emperor's finest. Love the hammer though, very well done!
