With all of the talk about sportsmanship, composition and tournaments...I was wondering if players have certain armies they 'hope to face'. Not because it would be a push over but because it would make for a fun game. For example, while I don't believe in comp to restrict players from taking whatever they wish...I still hope I don't play certain armies while hoping I do play others. I'll list mine;

Hope I don't play:
Mech IG----Little army interaction, even a win against this build feels 'bleh' to me
Mech Eldar-----Same as above
Necrons----The only thing more boring than playing against them is playing as them

Hope I do play;
Orks of any variety----Lots of interaction between units, seem to get a lot of memorable games from this codex
Space Wolves----As above
Chaos Daemons----Provided they get the drop right and take crushers, this makes for tense games
Chaos Space Marines----Yeah lash is annoying but they get out of their rhinos and mix it up

Thoughts?

The eye of terror.

I have fun playing against any army that gives me a challenge. Enemies that are a complete pushover are never fun at all.

Armies I've never lost to, and are therefore less fun to play against:

Mech Eldar
Nidzilla

In third edition I played a cultist and daemon army that was always entertaining for both sides. They were fairly disadvantage against most armies, but it was always fun to swarm an enemy with WS 2 madmen and pop out the daemons. Later I made a rouge psyker lead zombie LatD army with 90 zombies. The army was slow but able to absorb a large amount of damage and many people like facing a zombie swarm for the narrative it creates. The only thing I don’t like seeing on the other side of the table aside from shoe box titans is stand and shoot guard and tau armies as I find such tactics lead to boring game play.

Personal favorites: Tyranids and orks because these games tend to have a lot of maneuvering and carnage.

Dislikes: Stand and shoot guard and tau, for the predictable game play and that I always tend to win these conflicts with little effort on my part.

I hate playing generic WoC. We've all seen it. Nurgle knights and units, one unit with banner of rage, tzeennch sorcerers and a nurgle lord.

I like playing any army with that has a unit in that can be really powerful but is oft overlooked as it is too random.

I love playing either of the Inquisition lists or Chaos Daemons. Something a little different and that's always refreshing. I HATE playing IG Chimera spam or anything else with lots of guns. Shooting is easily the most annoying part of the game to me as it seems to take forever to resolve and it bothers me that I position and deploy strategically to face the guy who puts $1500 dollars worth of tanks on the back edge and rolls dice all game. I just don't know how anyone could enjoy playing that.

Ummm...somewhere...

I love versing gun line armies, I mean you get decimated on the way there, but when you reach their lines...and you get into assault...jee does that bring up good memories...or even better deep striking behind their lines, just the look on you opponents face when you assault his guard line with deep striking GK XD, i also love versing orks and nids, love the challenge of facing hoards and getting into inense fights!!!

I play horde Orks. The core of my army is pretty much always 60-90 boyz.

I like pretty much everything but AV 14 assault spam. Kinda lame for me to have to wait to do anything with my Orks until they get into assault range. Mechvet spam is kind of annoying. I've never had trouble winning but it's a slow game of popping near-identical chimera squads over and over. Mech eldar I've similarly not had trouble with but I spend the game downing transports with needing 6s to hit in assault.

My favorites to play against are codex marines (I love dragging down the heroes of the imperium with waves of xeno bodies) and any other horde army (because so many models on the table makes for some pretty epic stuff.)

Orks and Nids. I've always had a great time playing against either of these armies.

I generally dread playing against Necrons or certain CSM builds.

Any other army is entirely dependant on my opponent.

I don't dislike many armies. There are only really two that I can't stand: Crons and Nidzilla.
Crons because I have yet to play a game against them that this strategy didn't prove effective: Assault Crons, Arjac smashes lord, assault warriors with power weapons, Kill warriors, phase out army.
Nidzilla because I have never seen an effective list of it, and the game is usually over by turn 4.

I enjoy fighting horde orks, IG (even if they are of the stand and shoot variety), vanilla marines, and tau. I like tau especially because very few things are as amusing as launching a 15 man blood claw pack, with a wolf priest, into two or three squads of fire warriors. And winning. Can I get a cheer for sweeping advance?

I always look forward to anything really other then guard. I have a buddie who plays guard and its not that I dont like him or guard its that we play each other at least 2-3 times a week. So playing agianst guard happens pretty often so everytime i get a game in that isnt guard I am pretty pumped about it. Marines always make me smile since I am used to dealing with so many bodies that seeing so few on the board makes me happy.

As an ork player i gotta say DH is my favorite opposition. Its always a 50/50 chance of victory with all the psychic powers and as soon as the assaults begin lots of funny situations come out on both sides. nothing funner than an intense game of get my 200 boyz into assault with your 40 or so knights and let the bloodshed begin. i always seem to come out with a fun memory from a game with DH.

The army that i absolutely hate playing the most is IG. they either play hoard or mechanized and both suck to play. Mechanized always seems to try to kite you around or blow you to bits instead of engage you and IG hoard just isnt that much of a challenge. they stand around get some 200 shots in, only 10 manage to wound, then i come in and slaughter all of them on turn one. It was fun the first time but after that it just got old.

Also i have to say that the game type also makes a huge difference. for instance, i absolutely hate a spearhead set up because i run a foot slogging army and it takes me 2-3 turns to engage the enemy. I also have a lot more fun with objective games rather than plain old annihilation, but that's just because it uses more strategy.

For me, honestly the army has no bearing on the game. It's purely the player involved.

I don't really care if my particular list can't handle 3 Monoliths, Land Raiders, etc. I'm still willing to play the game out.

Runnin up on ya.

I play Tau, and not very well, so I have fun in any friendly game as every army brings something different to the table. It's a game, I play to have fun and spend some time with friends so winning takes a back seat to the, "oh my god, did your drone just kill my terminator?".

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

for me its any army thats closely balances with yours and has climatic events during game play. Ive been itching to play against nids with my ultramarines. I have never played that matchup before (small town), the entensity rises as they get progressively closer and closer. and talk about fluff worthy, at least for me. Im not picky as long its a good fun opponent, if you guys can laugh at yourselves when it gets one sided then its fun.

An army that has a consistent theme is normally fun to play against, I also find that armies with 'good old staples' tend to be fun to play against (IG with the good old LRBT for example, or Nids that still have a carnifex or two) I have only not had fun in a game twice, once my opponent had such bad luck it wasn't funny, the other time we were doing 3 players, then it went down to 2, and it suddenly quit being fun and started being really unbalanced (weird huh...)

I love playing against any Ork list. Even if I suck it up and lose (My Tau know this feeling all too well...) fighting Orks always makes for a memorable game.

I'm really not a fan of playing against IG in 5th Edition. I much prefer it when I can actually fight my enemy head-on, not just constantly try to get close enough to crack the tanks open.

My Orks are always in high demand at the local gaming club - it seems as if everyone wants to play against them. Horde Orks always provide a fun experience, especially when rushing objectives. Imagine the scene - a squad of Sternguard vets in a ruined temple, holding their objective against 60 charging Sluggas! No matter the outcome, it always ends up being epic.

I saw a very similar thing happen between an IG and Ork Speed Freeks army today. The Orks got shot to hell, but the 10-man Nob squad managed to kill at least 4 tanks throughout the course of the game. It's also why I stopped playing Tau for the time being; Gunline Tau can be fun, but if you can't kill a majority of the enemy's units by about turn 3, there's a pretty good chance your force will be tabled. Especially against speedy armies who can get up to assault range by turn 2.

One of my very first games was against a Wolfwing list, and it just about turned me off the game, just because I lost so terribly and was excruciatingly bored the whole time through. Thank goodness I've had some decent opponents since then!

I enjoy playing anyone who can have a laugh and not get too tense about the run of the dice, while still trying hard to beat me. Other important factors are a good-looking army - painted well, composed something like a real military force, maybe some individual conversions, etc.

I suppose there are armies I prefer to play against because I like the idea of them as antagonists - orks, chaos, the more interesting sorts of IG and SM. Necrons and Tau, I just don't find as visually interesting, and in necrons case they're quite boring tactically as well.

Beyond that I don't have specific requirements for how the opposing army should work tactically - it could ruin the game for me if the opposition was incompetent, but I've usually played with a small group who mostly made an effort to play well and field useful units.
