I saw a very similar thing happen between an IG and Ork Speed Freeks army today. The Orks got shot to hell, but the 10-man Nob squad managed to kill at least 4 tanks throughout the course of the game. It's also why I stopped playing Tau for the time being; Gunline Tau can be fun, but if you can't kill a majority of the enemy's units by about turn 3, there's a pretty good chance your force will be tabled. Especially against speedy armies who can get up to assault range by turn 2.

I think you'd enjoy playing the army I used then, I hadn't started work and so couldnt afford transports to go with anything, it was a slow walk through the firestorm for the marines, and this was before 5th, so they didnt get much cover, Calgar cassius and a termi sgt with lightning claws made it to the broadsides in the centre and on the left 2 tac marines + sgt made it to the fire warriors there and on the right 3 tac marines + sgt made it, by the end of the games cassius was gone (he wasnt T6 then) calgar was on 2 wounds and on the 3 sgt's remained

I've found the best armies are those with multiple dimensions to their play. Armies built purely around assault are as dull as armies built purely around standing still and shooting, and armies where every unit scoots about and shoots isn't much better. I find it interesting to face an army with a diverse range of units, especially so when there's a mix of specialised units (dedicated AT, dedicated assault etc) alongside adaptable units capable of filling multiple roles. It gives an army a lot of options, and means I'm never completely sure how my opponent is going to act next turn.

I've found games against the new Space Marine codex produce the above consistantly, the list forces durability and redundancy onto players (although perhaps not necessarily diversity). Other armies can be built like this, there's certainly tremendous scope for it in Ork and Tyranid armies (but like most codices the more poweful builds tend towards specialisation). I'd say Eldar are less capable of it, but that's alright as that's their point of difference from the other races.

But really a good game comes down to the opponent and his list more than the codex he uses.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
