Hey guys, fun show. Nicole, I do hope you get to play some Epic Duels at Pax East! Also, if you and Russ liked Sean of the Dead, the same crew did a "Buddy Cop Movie" that's just as funny called "Hot Fuzzz" which is worth the watch.
Tomb. Ah, Tomb, Tomb, Tomb. I do like this game, but it's horribly playtested and has some real problems - mostly unclear rules. However I've never played a game so many times that I thought had such flaws. It's like a movie that still manages to be really, really fun, even if the plot is full of holes.
I did notice some teeny problems with the review though! Russ said you can't both heal and redistribute cards - but you can. You area also actually able to re-attach spells amongst your spell casters once played, and even tactics can be redistributed. Traps ARE discarded after they are triggered, whether the heroes are successful or not ( they are claimed for XP if they succeed, discarded if not.) This is important actually, because otherwise the Black Sand Trap will catch a party in an infinite raid - fail -raid glitch loop if they don't have the dice to beat it. I was a little shocked to see some glitches creep their way into the review, and coming from Russ no less (*shockhorror*), but I think it can be easily forgiven because the rulebook is such a mess.
I find it funny that wives like this game so much! My wife loves it too. It's an ok game if you don't over-think it, but it's a very easy game to break with meta-gaming. A typical problem is that game breaks down in the early stages as it's waaaay more worthwhile to sit in the Inn turn after turn and recruit an unkillable super-party which breezes past the parties that went for the Early Raids.
It's still fun, but I think it's only fun if you sit down and just play without thinking. If you actually try to strategize, it gets too frustrating as as the incredibly random nature of the game will destroy the best laid plans, and whoever builds the longest usually wins. This may be different if you play with 6 players - I think the most I've played with is 4.
