Ok, since there was a fledgling discussion about this in another topic about this, I'll share a great article about this with those interested in it.

Starcraft was a 40k game that GW backed out of half way though, so Blizzard had all the game, just no way to use the IP, so they made some stuff up.

I've heard that rumour in the context of Warhammer Fantasy and Warcraft. Given Warcraft came before Starcraft and close similarities between Warcraft and WHFB, it makes a lot more sense than the 40K-Starcraft claim.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Gotta agree with Sebster. Theirs actually alot of Warcraft/Warhammer crossovers.

However I once saw something on the net. Of the weird old Tyranids that held swords, Then when the newer ones came out it was after Starcraft was launched the "new" Tyranids have talons and claws, not hand held weapons.

I wouldn't begin to fathom where It was I saw this though.

The initial link was between Warhammer and Warcraft.

However, I've noticed some slight similarities between Hydralisks and Raveners...

Both companies have been "borrowing" ideas from one another for a little bit of time now. Honestly, it's not that uncommon, and by this point both probably view it as free advertising to some extent.

Warcraft is what happens when you make a game and dont write the contract well enough. Blizzard could walk away, change the names and not be sued into oblivion.

The protoss - Eldar Similarities are the biggest of all actually.

Warcraft - Warhammer FB has a lot less crossover material. The Orcs in Warcraft are intelligent for a start.

I think the biggest similarities are 40k-Starcraft.

Terran Marines are like Space Marines. Not in the way they act...or fight... but they look very similar.

Protoss are a lot like Eldar.

I think the most obvious one is Zerg-Tyranids.

I heard a similar rumor a while back, only Starcraft was originally an Aliens vs Predator game (thus the Terrans getting flamethrowers and dropships and such). Dunno if it's true.

Edit - and the obvious one, Zerg creep = Alien hive goo.

The general feeling from threads I've participated in over the years was Blizzard trying to make some payback for the whole Warcraft/Warhammer situation.

You'd never get anyone to confirm it though. Starcraft in my opinion was Blizzard saying, well we got away with it with fantasy, lets do a Sci-fi one as well.

Regarding Warcraft/Warhammer. I like a few others can remember a games mag in the early 90's making note of Blizzard working on a Warhammer themed game for GW.
It was in one issue, right at the start in the news section.

I also remember someone linking a screenshot of the page years back in a similar arguement, but I can't for the life of me remember which forum it was on.

Regardless, I'm 100% certain with no doubt that Blizzard was originally working on a Warhammer game. For some reason they fell out, GW withdrew the licence and Blizzard just added bits and bobs and called it Warcraft as they didn't want to loose all their work.

For a long time the only other world that portrayed Orcs in the manner GW does, was Blizzard. There is a reason for that.
Also what Blizzard did was very common in the early 90's. I can remember many games basing themselves off pen/paper RPG's or tabletop games as a homage to the genre.

So aye, imo, there are some similarities between Starcraft/40K, I'm not sure if it was a direct micky take, or they just ended up close on their own accord. Although the previous situation with GW and Warcraft doesn't help.

I'm pretty sure in one of the Blizzard games, I think it was might have been Starcraft, or one of the ports to the consoles. There was a statement added in the credits with words to the effect of.. 'we thank Games Workshop on not suing us..' a literal to GW on the game credits.

Tbh I don't think there is a great relationship between the companies.

I stopped reading the article you posted when the author tried to compare StarCraft with the Starship Troopers book, but then made comments clearly indicating he had not actually read the book, only seen the movie. And didn't the movie come out after StarCraft?

Nope it did not, and then you haven't even read the part that is important... if you'r gonna dismiss something for that.... meh, I dont know.
Starship troopers= 1997
Starcraft = 1998

If I remember correct...

If the guy's writing an article, and says he's going to compare the game with a book, and then instead of actually doing that compares it with the poorly made movie and claims it to be the book, then he's not worth reading because he's not doing the proper research anyway.

Am I the only one who remembers that in Warcraft 2 if you clicked the dwarven griffon riders enough times he would say "My warhammer costs 40k!"

Pretty solid ommage there.

And I agree that if someone is refering to Starship Troopers the novel and has only see the movie, then they REALLY have no idea what they are talking about. That frickin CG animated serious was closer to the book then the movie and it still missed by a mile.

New Terran units for Star Craft 2.

They are named Reapers Raptors, with Jump packs....though they are a just a bit different from Raptors, but look closer to Seraphim with the double pistol action.....yay?
-edit: corrected by Soladrin.

Broodlord (sound familiar LOL) looks like a Giant screamer of Tzeentch with two little ones on the side.

Just some more similarities...though as much as I love GW, I can't wait for SC2...beta looks good.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Aye I do, in fact I have a feeling that it was my PS1 version of Warcraft 2 that had the message about 'thanks for not suing' in the credits.

This
"These include story elements, such as the remarkable congruency of the formation of the Protoss at the hands of the Xel’Naga, not to mention they also created the Zerg, to the creation of the Eldar under the C’tan, which unsurprisingly, were responsible for nascence of the Tyranids"
really???
Also there was about one paragraph involving GW and 40k the rest was about starship troopers, the glories of the "inner" story of starcraft and alien resurrection
