Well, if you play an army that cannot dish out enough damage
then let it stay in reserve.
Come in late and contest or occupy mission objectives,
or deny kill points.

Falcons ruled in the 4th ed.
But in the 5th ed, I'd prefer Serpents and Fire Prisms for obvious reasons.

I guess you never played Eldar in the 4th ed.
Man, Falcons were rather cheesy, almost impossible to destroy.
But in the 5th ed I'd prefer Serpents and Prims any day.

Most likely how they can't shoot enough weapons (which can be "fixed" by running an EML and shooting it's defensive blast missle). No Wave Serpent energy shield, nor the prism of doooooom.

Personal I prefer to foot slog as much as possible. Eventually I'll get it to work well.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Because Prisms sucked, Falcons were unkillable and Wave Serpents were merely OK. Also, Falcons could shoot all their weapons which totally rocked.

Now, Prisms are better, Wave Serpents remain OK and Falcons are, honestly, not that great. I mean a Wave Serpent has arguably just a good of a gun and can carry 10 guys while counting as a Transport. Falcons can contest but Prisms are soooo good.

Take Prisms. Their time has come. Heck, take two. Falcons are expensive for what they do.

Well, Prims hit automatically, no more shooting with BS * as required in the 4th ed.

In the 4th ed, a moving skimmer only could get glancing hits.
So the oppponent had to roll on the glancing table (there was a penetrating table too).
Holofields made them nearly indestructable.

Prism have a better gun now, they used to have a crappy gun.

In 4th edition rules, falcons were popular because of the different vehicle damage tables and defensive weapons.

If a fast skimmer moved >6", it could only take glancing hits, all penetrating hits were downgraded. Back then, a glance meant destroyed on a 6. With holofields, this meant that once you'd hit a holofielded tank and beaten its armour, you still had only a 1/36 chance to kill it. (skimmers could be destroyed by an immobilised result, but Eldar have another upgrade, vectored engines, to mitigate this) So, falcons were ungodly tough.

Obviously fire prisms can be given holofields too, the difference was that fire dragons (best tank killers in the game) and harlequins (back then, before assault terminators and with stronger rending rules, maybe the best assault unit in the game) can be carried in a falcon. Having such a powerful unit, able to cross the board with near-total immunity to fire, is pretty damn good.

The other side is the guns. Falcons were better at shooting because defensive weapons were S6 and under, so shuricannons/scatter lasers/starcannons could all be fired while still moving fast enough to be protected. Fire prisms, meanwhile, were less good then today because blast weapons had to roll to hit, then scatter.

There you have it: falcons were the games toughest transports, S6 guns were much more flexible. Now, fire prisms blast gun got an upgrade, and waveserpents energy field is usually considered better than holofields.

Phew, bit of an essay. Interesting piece of history though, eh?

This is what you should do.

2 Fire Prisms

3 Wave Serpents

Infantry

Vectored Engines on the five tanks, skip the other upgrades. Star Engines on one maybe if you like to tank shock.

What you do, the Fire Prisms can hang back out of range of their big guns but they also block LoS now so maybe use that to your advantage. I would personally figure that if I kept each of the five tanks out of melta range while still flying around shooting I was probably going to win. And you should get a couple EML Vypers while you are at it.

Kill everything and laugh.

VE's are no longer necessary if the skimmers move not more than 12''.
I never take this upgrade in the 5th ed.

Star engines cannot be used for tank shocking,
since tank shocking is made in the movement phase
while the star engines are activated in the shooting phase.

Star engines may not be directly usable to tank shock but they are still very helpful if you intend to tank shock. Ordinarily a tank shock ends your movement, leaving you wherever your movement ended and facing in the direction of travel. This will often leave the AV10 unshielded back armor facing elements of the enemy army that you just passed through. Star engines allow you to pick a better location and face your good armor at the enemy to better receive his fire in the next turn.

Mech everything.

Use your superior speed to deploy the majority of your army against the minority of their army to create a local superiority of force. ie leave some part of opponent army on the other side of the board and ineffective.

Make sure you can kill what you engage as eldar are fragile and cant really take hits back. Make sure the enemy squad(s) you engage are crushed in your initial shooting/charge.

Then mech up again and move onto another part of the board and rinse and repeat.

When the last turns start coming up, zip up to 24" to context all of their objectives while retaining yours. Dont forget you can tank shock :p

Mech eldar win through objectives because they can so easily contest any objectives and have a decent shot of retaining their own.
