AOL NEWS
WASHINGTON (March 20) -- House Democrats heard it all Saturday - words of inspiration from President Barack Obama and raucous chants of protests from demonstrators. And at times it was flat-out ugly, including some racial epithets aimed at black members of Congress.

Most of the day's important work leading up to Sunday's historic vote on health care was being done behind closed doors. Democratic leaders cajoled, bargained and did what they could to nail down the votes they will need to finally push Obama's health care overhaul bill through the House.

But much else about the day was noisy, emotional and right out in the open. After more than a year debating the capstone of Obama's domestic agenda and just hours to go before the showdown vote, there was little holding backThe tone was set outside the Capitol. Clogging the sidewalks and streets of Capitol Hill were at least hundreds - no official estimate was yet available - of loud, furious protesters, many of them tea party opponents of the health care overhaul.

Rallies outside the Capitol are typically orderly, with speeches and well-behaved crowds. Saturday's was different, with anger-fueled demonstrators surrounding members of Congress who walked by, yelling at them.

"Kill the bill," the largely middle-aged crowd shouted, surging toward lawmakers who crossed the street between their office buildings and the Capitol.

The motorcade that carried Obama to Capitol Hill to whip up support for the bill drove past crowds waving signs that read "Stop the spending" and "Get your hands out of my pocketbook and health care." Many booed and thrust their thumbs down as Obama rode by.

As police held demonstrators back to clear areas for lawmakers outside the Capitol Obama's speech, some protesters jeered and chanted at the officers, "You work for us."

Rep. Andre Carson, D-Ind., told a reporter that as he left the Cannon House Office Building with Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., a leader of the civil rights era, some among the crowd chanted "the N-word, the N-word, 15 times." Both Carson and Lewis are black, and Lewis spokeswoman Brenda Jones also said that it occurred.

"It was like going into the time machine with John Lewis," said Carson, a large former police officer who said he wasn't frightened but worried about the 70-year-old Lewis, who is twice his age. "He said it reminded him of another time."

Kristie Greco, spokeswoman for Democratic Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., said a protester spit on Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., who is black. Cleaver's office said the protestor was arrested but said the congressman won't press charges.

Clyburn, who led fellow black students in integrating South Carolina's public facilities a half century ago, called the behavior "absolutely shocking."

"I heard people saying things today that I have not heard since March 15, 1960, when I was marching to try to get off the back of the bus," Clyburn told reporters.

Inside House office buildings, protesters made their views known by visiting lawmakers' offices and chanting at legislators walking by.

Among the demonstrators was Delane Stewart, 65, of Cookeville, Tenn., who had come with her husband, Jesse.

"You know what's coming next if this happens?" she said, referring to the health bill's passage. "They're going to come after gun control."

Retired businessman Randy Simpson, 67, of Seneca, S.C., also said the health bill was just a first step.

"My concerns are about the health care bill, and the direction it takes us is toward communism, quite frankly," he said.

At a daylong meeting of the House Rules Committee, members of both parties squeezed into a tiny hearing room traded accusations in a session that was often a shouting match

WASHINGTON — Demonstrators outside the U.S. Capitol , angry over the proposed health care bill, shouted "[see forum posting rules]" Saturday at U.S. Rep. John Lewis , a Georgia congressman and civil rights icon who was nearly beaten to death during an Alabama march in the 1960s.

The protesters also shouted obscenities at other members of the Congressional Black Caucus , lawmakers said.

"They were shouting, sort of harassing," Lewis said. "But, it's okay, I've faced this before. It reminded me of the 60s. It was a lot of downright hate and anger and people being downright mean."

Lewis said he was leaving the Cannon office building across from the Capitol when protesters shouted "Kill the bill, kill the bill," Lewis said.

"I said 'I'm for the bill, I support the bill, I'm voting for the bill'," Lewis said.

A colleague who was accompanying Lewis said people in the crowd responded by saying "Kill the bill, then the n-word."

"It surprised me that people are so mean and we can't engage in a civil dialogue and debate," Lewis said.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver , D- Mo. , said he was a few yards behind Lewis and distinctly heard "[see forum posting rules]."

"It was a chorus," Cleaver said. "In a way, I feel sorry for those people who are doing this nasty stuff - they're being whipped up. I decided I wouldn't be angry with any of them."

Protestors also used a slur as they confronted Rep. Barney Frank , D- Mass. , an openly gay member of Congress . A writer for Huffington Post said the crowd called Frank a "[see forum posting rules]."

Frank told the Boston Globe that the incident happened as he was walking from the Longworth office building to the Rayburn office building, both a short distance from the Capitol. Frank said the crowd consisted of a couple of hundred of people and that they referred to him as 'homo.'

"I'm disappointed with the unwillingness to be civil," Frank told the Globe. "I was, I guess, surprised by the rancor. What it means is obviously the health care bill is proxy for a lot of other sentiments, some of which are perfectly reasonable, but some of which are not."

"People out there today, on the whole, were really hateful," Frank said. "The leaders of this movement have a responsibility to speak out more."

Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the Capitol on Saturday as the House Democratic leadership worked to gather enough votes to enact a health care overhaul proposal that has become the centerpiece of President Barack Obama's domestic agenda. Most were affiliated with so-called tea party organizations that originally sprang up during last summer's protests of the health care proposals.

Heated debate has surrounded what role race plays in the motivations of the tea party demonstrators. During protests last summer, demonstrators displayed a poster depicting Obama as an African witch doctor complete with headdress, above the words "OBAMACARE coming to a clinic near you." Former President Jimmy Carter asserted in September that racism was a major factor behind the hostility that Obama's proposals had faced.

The claim brought angry rebuttals from Republicans.

On Saturday, Frank, however, said he was sorry Republican leaders didn't do more to disown the protesters.

Some Republicans "think they are benefiting from this rancor," he said.

House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D- S.C. , said Saturday's ugliness underscored for him that the health care overhaul isn't the only motivation for many protesters.

"I heard people saying things today I've not heard since March 15th, 1960 , when I was marching to try and get off the back of the bus," Clyburn said. "This is incredible, shocking to me."

I still don't know what to make of the Tea Party yet. Everytime I see them on right wing broadcasts they still come off a bit too wacky for my taste. But with Palin at the helm I can see a new ABC sitcom in the works.

There's a-holes in every political movement, and always points to be scored by showing the a-holes.

To really look at a movement you need to look past the angry minority and at the substance of their beliefs, unfortunately that's a bit hard with the tea-partiers as they're a bit incoherent right now.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Average small town americans that want the government to "take their government hands off of their healthcare". Y'know, as if medicare, medicaid, and the insurance agencies weren't already government controlled and regulated.

Perhaps they mean hero for facing up to all those frothy-mouthed gaks screaming at him, whilst coping with that dreadful disease.

It ain't running into a burning building to rescue someone's toddler, but it wasn't bad going.

I find it hard to believe people can get so angry about the possibility of universal healthcare. Surely that's like, a good thing? And it's certainly come to something when people are using the term 'progressive' as a form of pejorative.

Please America - don't let these arseholes win. We know that the vast majority of you are decent, principled, caring and intelligent. Do you really want morons like Palin or the Teabaggers making decisions for you?

Of course you don't - you're better than that.

@Orkeo - Fair enough - what's the fething problem then? Reform? Anyone with half a brain can see the American healthcare need serious tweaking, even if only to make it more cost-effective. One could make the same argument regarding the NHS, for that matter. If they aren't talking about universal healthcare, then why the hell is everyone using words like 'socialism'?

I find it hard to believe people can get so angry about the possibility of universal healthcare in a bill that doesn't have universal healthcare in it. Actually I don't. Americans are pretty dumb.

The issue is that the tea parties are not made up of intelligent people and fox is a very good puppet master. Thats all there is too it. While there are plenty of good reasons to be against the health care bill, none of them are tea partier positions or points.

Opposition to the bill is a pretty mixed bag, from what I've seen. Some people think the government is going in the wrong direction, some think it isn't going far enough, some don't want anything to change (although they're a minority), some just don't want any more money to be spent. There's also a lot of misinformation about what the bill actually consists of (the death panel fiasco), and a lot anger about other things bleeding into it. The socialism thing seems to have rose up when a far more comprehensive national health system was first being proposed, and stuck despite what the bill actually began to entail.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Well, I just scanned it in order to better equip myself for talking about it. It took all of about 5 minutes, including the time it takes to make a cup of tea. If I can do it, then the people protesting against this bill should be able to. I get the distinct impression that this bill is just an excuse to march around and shout unpleasant things.
To call the bill 'socialist' is so ridiculous as to defy explanation. All it appears to do is set up a frame-work for ensuring people don't get shafted by insurance companies (rightly so), and requires all citizens to have health insurance, with the provision for tax credits/benefits for those who can't afford it.
If anything, it doesn't go far enough - I think Americans would benefit from a National Health Service, although it'll never happen sadly.
