Hey, I'm converting some termies into assault termies. I got 5 thunder hammers and storm shields, and I'm wondering if I should get any lightning claws. Does an assault squad still work well with only hammers, or should I get some lightning claws too?

Well what do you want the squad to do? Anti-MEQ? MC-hunting? Anti-horde?

I generally want it to be anti-everything, but I suppose that's impossible. I usually face Orks, Chaos Space Marines and Tau. The CSM player has abbadon, and these guys could be really good against him.

LCs are very good against things that can't ignore armor saves and will require many attacks to kill(Orks, smaller nid creatures, guard)

TH/SS terminators can dish out a decent amount of hurt and take an obsene amount in return, especially power wounds.

5 TH/SS terminators dish out 15 attacks on the charge as opposed to 5 LC termies 20.

LC advantages, Reroll to wound, 33% more attacks, strike at inititive.

Thunderhammer advantages, wound most models on 2+, ID most ICs that arn't immune, have the BEST saves in the game(2+ armor and 3+ Invul) units hit, but not killed are either stunned or reduced to Inititive 1 for the next assault phase.

which ever one you choose is a bargin for the points cost, much better then normal terminators which are not sturdy enough for the things they get tossed at them.

my TH/SS squad has never failed me yet, and if you lead them with a chappy in TDA then you get increased hit chance off the charge.

For an all comers build, I'm still a fan of 2 LCs and 4 TH/SS terminators in an assault squad. It gives you a decent number of I4, reroll wound power weapon attacks to thin out hordes and leaves a solid number of thunder hammer swings as well. I run them out of a redeemer at 2500+ points and they haven't let me down yet.

It's more or less accepted canon that TH/SS is the way to go.

I've seen them in action, and I tend to agree.

That said, throwing in one or two LCs shouldn't hurt TOO bad. You're not likely to take enough AP2 wounds from a single source to run out of 3++ to allocate them to

Also, if you have a mix, you can start pulling (or at least putting wounds on) the type of Term you don't need as much. Some armies will have no AP2, at which point you'd rather have LCs, since they've got more CC output against infantry.

Mesopotamia. The Kingdom Where we Secretly Reign.

I really like TH/SS. Also, since Terminators don't have Grenades and a smart opponent will take advantage of this when they can, your assault victims will often be going first anyway.

If anti-everything is what you are interested in then ThunderHammer/StormShield is your friend.
High strength power weapons that can deal with most everything your opponent can throw at you
and the 2+/3+ Armour/Invul. save combo to keep you in the fight.
In my humble opinion the best choice when not certain when what you are going to face.

Hope it helps!

I'd run with all TH+SS personally. I think Marines deal with hordes well enough with shooting. Assault Terminators are kind of the Hammer for a lot of armies, and I don't think LCs are as effective as that.

Alright, thanks guys. I'm sticking with the hammers, although I don't think they'd do too well against a mob of 30 boyz (Note to self: do not attack mobs of 30 boyz with assault terminators).

if you attacked them, they should have gotten messed up. W4 so like 30 hits, then 5+ to wound so like 10 wounds, then you get your 2+ saves. You should have failed one or 2. Then gotten 5-8 kills, provoked a fearless, then gotten more...

I haven't actually used them yet, haha. I was just speaking theoretically. I assumed that the sheer volume of smacks from the boyz would be enough to get through the termies 2+ saves. Also, I'll only have 5, not 10.

EDIT: I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but... I bought the terminator assault conversion pack from Games-Workshop.com and I noticed it didn't come with arms for the shields. >_< Do the metal bitz look good? And if I attached the shields to powerfists, would that look out of place?

It really depends on the rest of your army, who you regularly play, and the kinds of units you like to send them against.

My ideal setup is 4 x TH/SS and 1 x LC, generally lead by Vulkan inside a regular Land Raider. The single LC and Vulkans Heavy Flamer means I'm pretty good against horde (though it's not an ideal target), whereas the MC-Thunderhammers is enough to make up for the LC when facing Monstrous Creatures.

You brighten my life like a polystyrene hat, but it melts in the sun like a life without love, and I've waited for you so I'll keep holding on without you.
