hi everyone this is my first post on this forum and was wondering if i could get some tips in what is better for my winged hive tyrant.
scthing talons vs twin linked devourers
i expect to be playing quite a few space marines and i would like the hive tyrant to be more anti - infantry
thanks for any posts

The eye of terror.

Scything talons will help with anti-tank duty, as well as anti-HQ and anti-infantry.

Devourers are brilliant anti-infantry, but are better for non-winged tyrants, IMO, as they don't have the mobility to catch tanks.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

I think you could do more damage with the talons overall

even though my concept for my tyrant is completely different, in your case a winged tyrant is Lethal with one or two pairs of scything talons

OK, vs typical Space Marine infantry (3+ armour save, Toughness 4, WS4):

1 round of shooting with 2 x twinlinked brainleech devourers = 12 shots, of which 6 hit; reroll misses for +3, so 9 hit. Of the 9, 7.5 wound. Of the 7.5 wounds, 2.5 marines fail their armour saves. So each round of shooting kills 2.5 marines.

In CC, if you have no scything talons, you're hitting on 3+, so on the charge you have 5 attacks of which 3.33 hit. 2.77 wound (ignoring armour).

In CC with scything talons, you reroll the 1.67 misses, of which 1.11 now hit, doing an extra 0.93 wounds.

So for anti-Space Marine infantry use, the brainleech devourers are definitely better than the talons. You may only get 1 volley off before you attack in CC (since you're winged, & so can move + assault right out to the maximum 18" range of your guns), but 1 volley + CC attacks nets you a little over 5 dead marines, as compared to a little under 4 dead marines with CC alone. Whether they're worth +30 pts is up to you!

I run two pairs of TL devourers with BL ammo on my Flyrant. It's great for side shots on chimeras. I tend to keep my Flyrant out of close combat if possible or charge him in to finish off a squad. They are much more deadly as a mobile firebase.

I think the twin devourers would be best. The tyranid codex seriously lacks things that kill transports in the shooting phase. And you really want to do that, so you can assault the chunky bits inside during the assault phase. If you plan to depstrike your HT, then the devourers have the additional benefit that you can start doing damage the turn you land, rather than next turn.

That said, the twin scything talons make hunting heavy armor easy, even if your target has moved.

remember, 2 scytals can re-roll all misses. Prefered enemy only allows re-roll vs enemy with a WS.

I like double scything talons because then you can field more stuff that can also scare your enemy. Hive guard are good enough to take out any type of transports as much as I can tell...however, in my area they dont use a ton of transports yet...
