I played a game of kill-team yesterday and had some peculiar rules problems they are as follows:
As drones are technically wargear are they still a unit (as per independent characters and drones in drone section)
If not must they still maintain coherency with their controller?
Will they be removed if the controller is killed?
If only drones, not purchased as a squad are left what happens with their leadership of N/A?

We played it as tau codex has not got priority

Surely the drones should still have to retain coherency with the controller otherwise shield drones are entirely useless...

Easy, drone controllers are only useful to get discounted gun drones.
Else, no, everything is an individual model...the most you can get is a cover save from a model in front of each other, but no joining/squads of units.

But I don't recommend clumping together...hvy bolter bait right there, 3 shots, 3 targets

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Drones have got to be wargear for their controller or it creates many problems.

Problems like useless gear? Tau are not strangers to that sort of thing .

Unless bought as a gun drone squadron, drones are wargear.

And so? They are still models with characteristics. All models in a kill team mission fight as a separate unit, and whether or not Drones are taken as wargear or not doesn't change that fact.

The truth is, there is lots and lots of gear and special rules that doesn't do anything (or does weird stuff) in the 'Kill-team' mission.

You either play it 'RAW' and just don't bother taking any of those models/wargear, or you make up some house rules between you and your opponent to allow it, provided you're all okay with it. I've got a few suggestions here for some house rules in the last post of this thread:

Of course, none of my suggestions address this Tau drone 'issue', but I'm sure its something you could work out with your opponent if you wanted to play a more 'fluffy' Kill-team game. Just remember that if you're getting to make a house rule up to use one of your units, then you should be giving the same leeway to your opponent with some of their stuff that doesn't work right in a Kill-team game.
