Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Hey folks!

The horrorfex is a 2nd-3rd edition piece of wargear on a dark eldar vehicle. It has no strength value, doesn't cause wounds, just forces a pinning test. Its profile says that it may be fired instead of another vehicle weapon.

In 5th edition, things are a bit different. Now you have primary and defensive weapons, and what can be fired when is determined by the distance you move. Additionally, "weapons" have been given very precise definitions in the rulebook, one of which is to have a strength rating, which a horrorfex does not.

So my question here - is the horrorfex still a weapon, or just a piece of wargear? And if it is a piece of wargear, is there any reason that you can't move 24" and still use it? The only example I can think of where wargear is activated on a vehicle is a spotlight or smoke...

Can a BA fast rhino move 18" and smoke? Can it move and searchlight? Or is searchlight take the place of weapons? Can it move 18" and searchlight?

Rules answers please, no personal opinions.

As for the Horrorfex, I think the main issue that people will bring up is the wording that it may be fired "instead of another weapon."

The argument will go that if you cannot fire any weapons, how can you fire one "instead" of firing another one?

For what it's worth, the DE FAQ doesn't define the Horrorfex as a defensive weapon, so not sure what effect that'll have on the argument:

I'm not familiar enough with smoke and search lights to venture a guess.

From the 5th edition DE FAQ:

Q. Does the Horrorfex count as a defensive
weapon?
A. Ño.

A little history: In the 4th ed FAQ the weapon *was* a defensive weapon. But, once they re-did all the FAQs for 5th, they changed it to a non-defensive weapon.

I guess they thought it would be too good in 5th...sigh.

This just raises further questions, Since the horrorfex is not considered a defensive weapon, but its also not a primary weapon since its not defined as such and it does not have a STR value of 5 or greater. SO is it now considered not a weapon at all?

I'm pretty sure that it is not a weapon at all. It is just a piece of wargear.

Thus my question about using that kind of stuff....smoke, searchlights, etc.

Searchlights have the effect of illuminating the target unit of the vehicles shooting, and so you cannot searchlight stuff if you cannot fire any weapons.

As for smokelaunchers you certainly can use them if you move flat out.

It does "elude" to it in the codex though. It says it is a "larger version of the terrorfex" and that it has the same profile as the terrorfex except with an 18" range. And as I am sure you guessed it, the terrorfex is a ranged weapon for troops.

Yeah, i would have to say it is a weapon too DoP. It has a full Profile, and is a version of a weapon used by the infantry. On the Plus side, it lets you live through another Weapon Destroyed and can affect Fearless units

Okie-dokie.

I'm learning my way around DE, just trying to figure out how to play them.
