A day old, but still...
When former South Australian attorney-general Michael Atkinson stepped down from his portfolio last weekend, gamers around Australia breathed a sigh of relief. Atkinson has been the most vocal opponent of the introduction of an R18+ rating for video games in Australia, and many gamers saw him as the only person standing in the way of an adult rating for games in the country. But despite his resignation, the R18+ cause is not won, because all of Australia's state and federal attorneys-general still need to unanimously agree on its introduction.
With Atkinson stepping down, attention has now turned to South Australia's next attorney-general, a person who may very well be a key figure in any future R18+ discussions. South Australian premier Mike Rann has this afternoon revealed who the new minister will be--former backbencher and Enfield member John Rau.
Rau has been a member in Enfield since 2002 and, like Atkinson, is a trained lawyer. According to the South Australian ALP Web site, Rau is married with three children and is a keen gardener, a cook, and an avid reader of nonfiction. Little is known about Rau's views on gaming.
Stay tuned to GameSpot AU for more information on Rau as it comes to hand.
UPDATE: While Rau himself has yet to officially comment on the R18+ issue, other sources are already claiming the new Minister is pro-gaming. According to Gamers4Croydon president Chris Prior, the gaming-focused political party is of the opinion that Rau supports an R18+ rating for games.

Not many games will actually need an R18+ rating anyway. The uncensored version of Left 4 Dead 2, possibly the next GTA game, and a few others.
Most MA15+ games aren't any worse than MA15+ movies.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I guess it makes people who like games like Manhunt happy. I remember getting that game and then two weeks later it was banned, a full week and 6 days after I stopped caring about the game . I don't remember any other games that have ever really used plastic bags.

I bought Manhunt and took it back to the store the same day.
That gak isn't even funny.

I liked Manhunt for a while. I just got bored of it quickly.
But Manhunt shouldn't be used as too much of an example. There are alot of good games we have alot of trouble playing because they're "too extreame".

Three girls in bed together.
Beating until his head no longer resembled a face.
Ripping Helios' head off on camera while he screams, and then carrying that head around with you.
Cutting and watching him bleed to death.
Gutting .
No, were God of War III a movie, it'd be R. It's another fine example of why not having an R18+ rating creates an inconsistent system where games that should be R18+ are squeezed into the MA15+ bracket.

It wasn't really any worse than Mortal Kombat: Deception.
That's just my opinion though.

Left 4 Dead 2 is the big one - the censored version of that is really dull experience. It's a game that really needs gore to get the visceral experience of fighting the zombie horde.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something. |

Absolutely. Watching a horde vanish into thin air as you mow them down just isn't terribly satisfying or realistic.
