Its not really a question on what is better then the other.
Im soo very torn between Orks and IG.
I have been reading both codexes and im intrigued by them both.
IG and their tanks and masses of troops and with the orks the prospect of doing a Big Mek army theme.
Could i hear from you IG and Ork players out there your take on your army.
How do they compete on a tournament level ?
How are they to play and so forth.
With regards
Cliff

I'd go for IG.
If you're feeling particularly ambitious you could do both. Use greenstuff to dress the orks up like Valhallans. Or use 'humie slaves' for counts as grots. Chimeras become trukks and vice versa. With enough modeling you could use the same army for both an IG and an Ork list.

-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |

Yes there is! Orks i found more fun to play as and against. I have thrown together fun lists for orks and still won alot of games with them. Orks are very flexible and almost all units for them are tournament worthy. You also wont dish out nearly as much cash for orks as you would IG. Think about having to dish out almost $60 times 9!

Cash isnt an issue.
One concern with the IG is that they are static, kind of like the Tau.
A shooty army that doesnt do much in CC.
Whats your take one this ?

It's not really too different. In terms of play style, you could do many different things with each army, but both tend to be mechanized or tank heavy in competitive environments. I think Orks are more versatile in what they could do (and still do it well), and there really shouldn't be too many problems learning how to play one or the other.

I play orks, dabbled with the idea of an IG air cav list, but can't quite massage it to how I'd like it to play (so I'm probably going to wait for Dark Eldar in that respect).
My take is that you use Orks for fun, modeling, and fluff, IG if you want a stronger codex in terms of gameplay, especially for higher point tournaments. Orks are alright and can do fine in low to mid-range point levels, but have some serious weaknesses that are easily exploitable at the higher end tourney circuit. A good general can make a weaker codex work, so if you want a challenge, orks can offer that, whereas a "power" IG build is pretty easy to put together.
In terms of learning curve, they are probably about the same, depending on your build. Horde orks are easy: push everything forward, but gunline IG are about the same: shoot everything near you. Neither is particularly compelling, but other IG builds offer pretty good tactical opportunities. Orks are a little handicapped by their tendency to cluster for survival, either in hordes as bullet-soaks or in tight balls to exploit the kustom force field.
Anyway, it boils down to what you want. If you want character, flavor, and a decent army that is a challenge against high-end builds, you can't go wrong with orks. If you want arguably the strongest codex out right now (SW's are the other) with a lot of viable builds, IG is very fierce.

IG is fun, very powerful once you get to know the army, and offers great variety in lists (this year's Adepticon notwithstanding), but it can get extremely expensive. No matter what route you go, you will be buying a lot of plastic: a lot of plastic men, a lot of plastic tanks, a lot of plastic airplanes.
Orks are also great, with multiple potent builds (mechanized, slogging swarm, wagon rush, bikers, kans, etc.) for variety and modeling/painting challenges. It also can get quite pricey, although I think mech guard still holds that crown.
Basically, the difference between the two armies is you can run IG in melee, but they prefer to shoot; you can run Orks at range, but they really prefer to be in melee. IG has more crazy tanks, Orks have more crazy units. Some people even combine the two, fielding Orks in looted IG vehicles using the IG codex.

Stats and effectiveness aside, (though orks would probably win there too), Orks are much more fun to play, at least in my personal opinion.

Then there can be only one easy solution.
Use Ork models , but play IG rules. Just "loot" everything

You just get static stats for a looted wagon in the ork codex nothing like you take a Leman Russ and get to use the same weapons that is in the IG codex. I found IG boring also and building lists seemed tedious to build for them. I couldnt get a real good grip on the IG codex in terms of building lists. IG doesnt quite work the same as other codices.

Orks have something IG will never have: S10 Power fists/klaws.
Orks at tournament level tend to follow one of a few builds:
Battle-wagon spam: Lots of big transports often with a "complex" nob unit (Complex nobs are tied as the hardest unit to kill alongside mechanised TH/SS Assault Terminators)
Kan Wall: Line of walkers with heavy weapons, Meks with KFFs and then tonz of boyz with tonz Dakka
Green Tide: Fairly self-explanatory
Nob Bikerz: Take the complex nobz and then make them even scarier.
Trukk Rush: Like a wagon spam only more mechanized units and trading armour for speed.
Unfortunately for orks we can't combine these builds with each other, however each one, when you get the hang of them, can be quite tough.
Also we get some seriously nasty units and combos:
Burna-Wagon: Exploit the rules for Open-Topped transports with flame templates.
Loota-Wagon: Take a gun-wagon (battle-wagon with KillKannon and lots of dakka) and fill it with Lootas; run it up to the middle of the battlefield while other units overtake it, and then use to practically break anything on the table.
Complex Nobz: A must have in tournaments, exploit the wound allocation rules to make your opponent's day hell.
Boss Snikrot and Kommandos: Keeps the enemy off the backline and can assassinate Heavy Weapon infantry like Broadsides or Devastator squads that lurk back there.
Ghazghkull Mag Urk Thraka: upgrades your Waaagh! buff and subsequently can crash through a lot of enemies very quickly.
Killa Kanz: a unit of accurate (by ork standards) heavy weapons mounted on a fusion of ill-tempered grot and scrap-metal mecha.
|
Also littlenibbler Orks aren't about armour saves.
Orks are about having too many models on the table, and wasting the other guy's time with your movement phase.
Orks are about having the toughest units on the table.
Orks are about not caring about how many bodies are left in a long winding trail until the squad is down to less than a third its starting strength.
Orks are about rolling more dice then you can count without the aid of a calculator or a pen and paper.
Orks are about having totally fething insane characters tearing gak down like Doc Grotsnik, Ghazghkull or Snikrot.
Orks are about being too fething awesome to die...
Lets settle this in the arena http://pantsformer.mybrute.com |

Orks are the easier to learn to play.
If you're going big mek then you'll want something like:
2x big mek
2x deff dread
3x3 killa kans
3x1 koptas with saw
lotsx shoota boyz
elites of your choice (lots of people will say lootas but I don't like them. nobz, mega nobz, tankbustas, kommandos, burnaz - all good)
