I've been trying to plan our display/demo board for our booth at Gencon this year, but can't seem to decide on a design.

Here are my three current ideas, they are all 48"x48" (the max space we can dedicate to it):

So I figured I'd see what the Dakka community has to offer for inspiration, what awesome displays have you seen at cons? What would draw your attention?

I like option one- but if you want to get fancy, try adding Byzantine architectural elements to it, like a central keep with a nice dome on it in the court yard, or gothic style elements.

I like option 2 because it allow you to focus on the board via 2 sides only.

Option 1 while it looks fancy it doesnt help zoom into the subjects.

Four feet by four feet is a lot of space for a display board. Extend one side by 24 inches and you've got a regulation playing table. Just exactly how big is your army? o.O

As for the layout, I tend to favor the more simple approach. That way it doesn't distract from the armies or any demos going on.

Its not a tourney display board, its a Demo & Display board for our booth at Gencon. Something to attract attention to over booth and then to provide demos of our game on.

Well what game is it? Because you've got to factor in the playing style

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

A rolling hill towards the back of the board with a series of trenches, pill boxes and razor wire strung across it, with a heavily cratered plain in the foreground.

Lots of mud everywhere.

WWI themed boards look fantastic.

'Brushfire - Historia Rodentia'

We'll be releasing the rulebook at Gencon. Its a semi-historical skirmish game with a non-furry animal visual style, similar to 'Redwall' or 'The Secret of NIMH'. I say semi-historical because all the factions in game are based around historical armies. Like Aquitar, a faction of around burrowing mammals is based on Napoleonic France. We're slowly pouring out art & and background information on our website, along with greens of the minis.

You'll be able to field Chipmunks with gatling guns.

When doing demos, I'd suggest a much smaller board. The LGS had 2'x2' flat boards for demoing games since you really don't have time to play a full game for a demonstration. You can certainly make it more involved if you want, but usually two opposing squads and a couple of terrain pieces are all that's needed for demos.

So you need something that fits with that historical period don't you? Say a muddy Napoleonic battlefield?

Perhaps a lightly wooded board with the outer wooden wall of a small township on one edge/corner?

For some reason I was thinking of Asterix the Gaul when I read your description of the game you will be demoing.

Somewhere in south-central England.

I like the castle except that the central courtyard is very enclosed.

The bastions are similar to a Vauban fortification of the 18th to 19th century and will fit in with your game concept.

You could take that idea, open out the walls and present either the inside of the fort to the viewer, concentrating on attacking figures, or present the outside of the fort to allow the figures on the walls to be prominent.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
