Ok, so I just finished watching a live concert dvd of Iron Maiden. Never seen anything from them live, and only heard very few of their songs. So basically you could say I wasnt a fan, heard some things but thats about it. I was blown away at how good these guys are. So I need some DAKKA metal heads to tell me a couple really good cds by them, as now I have to have more!
I've seen them three times now, and have tickets to their show this summer (with Dream Theater too).
If you want a good sampling of their material, in a live setting, the recent Flight 666 is a concert album playing mostly stuff from their heyday in the mid-eighties.

I was thinking more studio stuff, but Ill have to check that out for sure. I seen it in my living room, and actually feel a bit pumped just seeing it. Pretty crazy
Studio albums - I think Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is a great album. The studio doesn't really capture their energy though, I think. In all cases, I prefer their live albums to their studio ones. It's not that the studio albums aren't good - but there's something extra in the live ones.
Redbeard has cited some great Iron Maiden albums, you may also want to check out "Piece of Mind", "Number of the Beast" and "Killers" (although Bruce Dickenson isn't the singer on Killers).

Dance of Death, is a great album. Although I agree with Redbeard about their live stuff has that energy to it that a studio can't really capture.

I first saw Maiden on the Seventh Son Tour with GnR opening. They had this like 500 pound crystal ball and the stage show was awesome. The two tours after that were pretty good, but way less theatrical.
My favorite Maiden albums are the solid 80s ones; Piece of Mind, Number of the Beast, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time (if you can find the LP version of this you too can spend hours baked out of your mind looking for hidden details in the cover art) and Seventh Son. All of them are great albums. I'm sure most of them are under $10 at most record stores now.
No self respecting Iron Maiden fan is without Live After Death, the quintessential rock concert album. I have to second the recommendation of the 80s run of albums, especially Piece of Mind and Powerslave. I saw them during the No Prayer for the Dying tour with Anthrax as the opening act.
Awesome, thanks everyone. Im a huge music fan, and rather critical of what I listen to. I rarely will say a band sounds good live, but like I said, I was floored. So Im definitely going to check out what youve mentioned.
Not only is their music great, but they are seriously into history. Particularly military history. Here is the video that made me want to grow my hair long when I was like 8 years old.
Good to know that you discovered the Maiden.
Seems like everybody has put stuff up that's better then what i can do, so I'll just post my favorite pics of Eddie.

Guns and metal. A winning combination!
Yea I noticed that in that dvd I watched. Alot of their songs actually had a story to it. Like Ive said, Ive heard a couple of their songs, and really liked the one Ive heard, just never noticed them till the other day. I think Im going out to buy a cd or two in the next day or so
The studio albums are great but maiden is really a "live" band, their music is just so much better in person or even on a live album. In fact they're the only band who's live albums I ever liked. Most other bands suck live, IMO.
Anyway, top of my list is 7th son of a 7th son for studio albums. maybe it's cuz it's the first one I heard by them back in the day, but it's the one album where I love every song on it and after 20ish years I still love listening to it. All of their other albums have good songs mixed in with just-ok songs. So here's my list of favorite maiden songs by album (note, no listing the 1st 2 albums cuz I don't think maiden was maiden till Bruce came along)
Number of the Beast:
Number of the Beast, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Children of the Damned, The Prisoner
Piece of Mind:
Revelations, Flight of Icarus, Die With Your Boots On, The Trooper, Still Life, To Tame A Land
Powerslave:
Aces High (one of their best ever), Powerslave, Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Somewhere in Time:
Caught Somewhere in Time, Wasted Years, Stranger in a Strange Land
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son:
All of em!
No Prayer for the Dying:
weakest album, Fates Warning is really the only one I like from it.
Fear of the Dark:
Fear of the Dark, Afraid to shoot strangers
Next 2 albums didn't have bruce, so they don't count as maiden albums
Brave new world:
Wicker Man, Brave new world, Dream of Mirrors, The Nomad
Dance of Death:
Dance of death, New frontier, Paschendale
A Matter of Life & Death
Different World, Brighter Than A Thousand Suns, The Longest Day, The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg, The Legacy
I saw them live at Earls Court. They rocked so hard, the amplifier wiring caught fire and the show was halted for half an hour while it was changed. They played football on the stage during the break. I enjoyed their show immensely, and would recommend highly.
If you like Bruce Bruce's vocals, you might also want to check out his pre-Maiden band 'Samson'. There is a guy with a gimp mask on the album cover. Apparently it was the drummer.
I agree that Dickerson was the better singer, but you can't ignore that Paul Di'Anno had a great "metal voice" & that the first 2 Maiden albums where great...even without Bruce...

Iron Maiden
Killers
Number of the Beast
Piece of mind
Powerslave
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Live After Death
i discovered them when i was 12. I'm 40 and still listen to and love Maiden. welcome to the party KingCracker!
ps someone mentioned their historical song writing. 2 of my favorites are based on fiction. Rime of the Ancient Mariner and To Tame a Land. the later is based on Dune.

I agree Paul Di'anno was good, but for me maiden's sound just wasn't really complete till bruce. And the 2 albums with blaze weren't too bad, but again it just wasn't the same without bruce.
never got into Samson though, but I do love Bruce's solo stuff. Chemical wedding is prolly his best solo album IMO, I also like Skunkworks a lot.. didn't like that one so much when I first got it but it really grew on me later.
I've seen em a bunch of times live. Not really into concerts anymore but if I ever was to go to a concert again, maiden is really the only band I'd hurt my ears for again.
