Do models have to disembark from a drop pod the moment it enters a battle? Can they choose to remain inside until their next turn and so disembark and still be able to shoot/assault, all the while getting the protection of the drop pod's AV12?

The drop pod section states that when the pod hits the table the doors are blown open and everyone must disembark.

Okay, I can live with that. In other news, the rules state that a vehicle entering the battlefield by deep strike counts has moving at cruising speed. I get that this means that drop pods can't fire their storm bolters/deathwind launchers, but does this also mean that drop podded dreadnoughts are unable to fire the turn they arrive on the battlefield? (Hell, walkers don't even have a cruising speed)

Walkers can move and fire all of their weapons. Moving at cruising speed normally isn't an issue for them, but in this instance they would still be covered by the normal allowance.

And no, the Drop Pod can't fire on the turn it arrives. It's probably supposed to be able to, but this would seem to be something that was overlooked with the decision to count Deep Striking vehicles as moving at Cruising Speed.

So, just to clarify in the simplest words possible: A dreadnought deployed in a drop pod CAN shoot in the turn it deep strikes?

Yes.

Yes. Page 95 BRB. In that turn's Shooting phase, these units can fire (or run) as normal, and obviously count as having moved in the previous Movement phase. Walkers can Move and Shoot in the same turn so the answer, again, is yes.

BT drop pods can still fire, albeit at a BS of 2. (machine spirit Disregard this bit, it's apparently the line after the Machine Spirit note that says they can fire on the turn they arrive) So either they really overlooked something or they felt that a full squad (or dread) firing on the turn they arrive was sufficient.

Regular Marine Pods also had Machine Spirits originally. BTs will lose it in the next codex, like everyone else has.

True, but I'm gonna hold onto my legacy goodness as long as I can.

What protection? Every game I've played with drop pods, they get penetrated and blown up before they get a chance to fire. AV 12 is only good when you have no Land Raiders. They're also Immobilized and Open-topped, with only one weapon. Not a wonderful combination.
