Nice! Now we can actually play right away instead of going through the, "Buy, read read read read, play" routine.

I'm excited about this game, but I've enjoyed a lot of other FFG products.
One thing that was kinda sad, though, I was hoping for the pieces to be at least slightly painted instead of just being single-colored...Oh well, I'm sure it helps game flow or something?

More likely it limits the amount of pieces the chaos player can use. There's only so many of each piece per chaos god.

Does the game come with anything else? Some source material would be nice, as the game is a little thin on the setting. I'd hate to think that the events of the Horus Heresy are 'assumed knowledge' for this game.

Its a good question, but I'd bet good money that there is another booklet of background material since this is labeled the 'rules of play'. It seems unlikely that GW would miss a chance to pimp out their background to people who have never played their core games before, and like you say I think knowledge of the background would certainly enhance anyone's enjoyment of the game.

As for the rules themselves...woo, are they a LOT for a boardgame. I look forward to trying to figure them out.

Anyone know the scale? I see that titan being used in games of epic, I'm really hoping they're close.

I haven't had a chance to read through the rules yet, so I was unaware that there was no 'background/fluff' in there!

I REALLY do hope that there's a separate book in there, detailing 'the story so far', i.e., everything up to the Siege of Terra (with, of course, the 'real' ending as well!).

I'm dissappointed with the lengthy rulebook. I hoped for a second that I might get one or two of my non-gamer friends to give this a try, perhaps from those that have had brief dalliances with the hobby over the years. Seeing the book makes me really doubt this as a possibility. A shorter game with an expansion would have been nicer for me.

Hmm, not really that practical IMO. Bear in mind that one of the stipulations of FFG's contract with GW is that they cannot produce models for use with GW games in their licensed products.

This pic might help a bit more

reds8n, what do your sources/contacts in the Warp say about the existence of a 'fluff book' as well in this box?

It's an abstract game, each mini represents an army. Not sure what the size is.

The Titans are not even close to Epic scale.

The game is going to have more fluff - the game has 6 different scenarios to play, and if you look you'll see they aren't in the rulebook. This means there is a scenario book as well, which is the perfect place to have more background.

So, any thoughts on the rules? is this more of a 'lightweight wargame' like memoir '44 or is it more of a 'specialized boardgame' like Chaos in the Old World?

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

OK, that video was a bit dramatic, but I guess that's to be expected...

Still...

References to the greatest betrayal in the Universe, as well as the fate of the Universe hanging in the balance?

Lets just worry about the galaxy first!

And another reference to "Holy Terra" before it was actually, you know, "Holy".

Still, looks like it will be fun - I guess!

I want to get a better feel for the mechanics before deciding.

Plus, they show the contents towards the end, and I'm not seeing a 'Fluff' book - they wouldn't leave out something as important as that, would they?

..and is now on sale !

Horus Heresy, the two-player board game of treachery and heroism in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, is now on sale at your local retailer!

In the Horus Heresy board game, the most legendary battle in the history of the Warhammer 40,000 universe unfolds across the razed plains of Terra and in the frozen orbit above. Deadly fighting ranges from the Emperor’s golden Inner Palace to Horus’s flagship, the Vengeful Spirit.

Taking the side of traitor or loyalist, two players control either fearless Space Marine legions or deviant Chaos Space Marines, mighty Titans, Imperial Armies both loyal and traitorous, and a fearsome array of other units, including the Emperor and Horus themselves.

An innovative order and initiative system forces each side to carefully consider the commands they issue to their troops. A dramatic, card-driven combat system incorporates escalating damage, gives players the opportunity to allocate resources between attack and defense, and brings to bear the unique special powers of each unit type, from fortification-destroying Titans to the perverse daemons of Chaos.

This legendary tale of treachery and heroism is brought to vibrant life with over one hundred magnificent sculpted plastic playing pieces. The stunning three-dimensional map of Terra brilliantly portrays the landscape immediately surrounding the Imperial Palace, from the magma-filled crevasses to the fortifications that offer the Imperial player protection against both enemy assault and orbital bombardments.

Each one of these structures, as well as the Imperial Palace itself, have been expertly sculpted, and rise above the landscape to create a truly immersive experience. The fortifications of Terra have never looked more formidable! Once the board is set up with playing pieces and terrain for your first game, it will be a wonder to behold.

Horus Heresy includes six scenarios that differ in both difficulty and style. The first scenario, titled Brother Against Brother, is recommended for all new players as it provides predetermined starting locations for both player's forces. It is a well balanced version of the Battle for Terra, and also presents a roughly historical recreation of the conflict's events.

Can someone please list the contents of this game, as well as whether or not there is a 'background' book and/or section to the rules?

Thanks!

The scenario book has a 10-page section, pretty dense, that's all fluff and background.

I haven't had a chance to play the game yet (though I have a copy, and it looks incredible), but a couple of my coworkers have and they've really liked it. I'm a pretty big fan of Chaos in the Old World, and the designer of Horus Heresy contributed to that, so I'm really looking forward to a chance to play this one.
