Ultramarine Scout with Sniper Rifle




Hi there, I have a problem. I'm playing Space Marines against Orks with 1000 points, and, try as I might, I cannot beat them.
The 'orky' tactic at my FLGS is to pop all the boys in vehicles, protected by a Big Mek's kustom force-field. They are then in my face on turn 2, me completely failing to destroy the tanks in turn 1, and I am them mashed to pieces in the ensuing combat, the Orks winning

I can post the Ork army list if required

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated

You need some anti-tank and high AP weapons. He has only 30 boyz?
And can you post your army list?

Yeah, I know, 30 boys isn't much, but it devastates my army
Is a Land Raider the best bet for anti-tank?
Devastators?
Also are Sternguard something I should be keeping in the army, as they tend to kill a lot in my games (before I get pummelled )

Take a land rider it should work.
Take devastators w/ anti-tank and anti-infantry weapons (lascannons, hvy bolters).
Keep sternguard, give them combi weapons if you want

Ghazghkull Thraka and a battlewagon in a 1,000 point list? And a big mek with a KFF? *laughing*

Couple notes:

1. That list is probably illegal, or you remember it incorrectly, or the Ork player is foolish. The transport capacity of a battlewagon is 20 models, the KFF is 1, Ghazghkull is 2. So the battlewagon is full of boyz, and the KFF and Ghazghkull are either split between the Looted Wagon and trukk, or both in the looted wagon with the nobs while the boyz are in the trukk, or vice versus.

2. Trukks are AV10, open topped. You can kill them with a bolter. Looted Wagons are AV11, open topped. You can kill them with autocannons, assault cannons, lascannons, missile launchers....

3. None of those have reinforced rams or deffrolla(BW) meaning that you should play keep away and make him roll through terrain. If he rolls a 1, he's immobilized.

4. IF he's rolling a battlewagon, a trukk, and a Looted Wagon (and a killa kan) - 4 vehicles in 1000 points....take advantage of it. He's only got 30 boyz. Two troop choices. I presume he's wanting to play annihilation every game? Try some of the other missions. Capture and Control. Seize Ground. With seize ground, he's pretty much screwed, and with capture and control, he's going to have to leave one of his two units in the backfield to hold his objective.

5. Looks like what you need are a couple of multi-meltas. Stick them on scout speeders, or on scout bikes / attack bikes...whatever you have.

6. Mech up in return. 10 man SM unit, stick a lascannon in there and a flamer if you can too, and take a rhino with them. Tac squad them and put 5 (with the lascannon) somewhere favorable to shooting at his stuff, and put the other 5(with the flamer) in the rhino.

7. If he's going to mech up with a freakin' battlewagon and Ghazghkull at 1,000 points....do something equally obnoxious back. Take a Land Raider Redeemer. Put lightning claw terminators in it. Put a few more multi-meltas in your list. That's pretty much game over. Lightning claws rip up orks. When Ghazghkull gets his Waaaugh! you're going to have to stay away - you don't want to mess with that 2+ invulnerable save.

8. He doesn't have any real anti-tank. No deffrolla, no boarding planks, no grabbin' klaws....just mech up in return and wreck him.

Thanks RaegMachine, the Land Raider and/or Devastators will probably replace my Vanguard Veterans (yes, Vanguards, I know I am foolish
Dashofpepper, wow, thanks for all the tips, must check to see whether or not that list is illegal
Ghazghkul and the Mek are split, the Mek's vehicle goes in the middle, therefore protecting the other two tanks
And yes, somehow the dice always rolls annihalation. Maybe i'll ask him wheter he wants to give the other two a try, instead of annihalation all the time...
