I'm considering getting a battlefoam bag since I'm going to college wnat something that is easy transport and can fit in the dorm easy,
but now the actual question: So am I better off buying the empty bag and then getting the specialized ork foam trays to fit in said bag? or getting the bag with the trays that come with it?
I'm going to use the bag to transport, trukks, bikes, deffcoptas, battlewagons, lootas, HQ units
also for those of you who are more battlefoam knowledgeable than me, do the individual bought foam trays fit all of the larger bags(720/1520)

Getting the bag with the trays is much cheaper, as otherwise the foams are $20 each. Also, if you buy it as a package deal, you can have the foam customized to your specifications (either design your own foam, or give them a list of your collection, and they'll make it for you.
The battlefoam bags accept the battlefoam trays, which are 12"x15.5" IIRC.

I got the 1520, and it's the greatest thing ever. I can fit all my IG in the bottom section, and all of my Warmachine in the top. At some point, I want to get the 216 bag for my Flames of War, but with zippers on both ends so I can attach them all together. Then I can carry everything in just one bag (well, a bag and a box for my Vendettas and baneblade... damn oversized things!).

I also got a P.A.C.K 1520.
You don't have to buy the trays and bag separately.
The thing holds 22" of foam, and you can have the PACK built with a custom-loadout. IE, your only restriction is that your foam can only total 22" of height; troop trays are 1" tall, vehicle trays are 3-6", depending on your requirements, and you can have every tray custom-built and inscribed for whatever you want to go into it. Its very nifty.
My advice, and what they'll tell you on the phone: Figure out what you want to go into your carrying case. How many models. If you have any special conversions, they have guides for tracing it so that they can build that foam slot for you - check out their webpage; its quite intuitive about how to make things work. Then give them a call - Romeo/Jama, and they'll help you flesh out how many trays, custom-fittings, etc - or you can use the pre-built ork loadout trays if you have the appropriate number of models for them.
For example, for my Dark Eldar, the standard tray holds 4. I got 3 of those trays, then had a third one custom-built to hold two raiders and 6 jetbikes. that kind of that.
