Anybody seen this fantastic concert? I just got back from seeing it (its first night in Minneapolis, Minnesota) and I have to say, it was really an incredible experience. For those who don't know (Shame on you!), Video Games Live is an orchestra concert featuring video game music from the ages, from the earliest days of Pong and Space Invaders, to the most modern of games with Halo and God of War. It was created by Tommy Tallarico - who hold the world record for number of games he's had a hand in - and Jack Wall, composer of a wide array of games, the most recent of which is Mass Effect 2.

Has anybody gone to see it in their hometowns, or made the trip to see it when it came near?

Oh, and here's the list of what they played (As much as I can recall, anyway)
Classic Games Medley
Metal Gear Solid
God of War
Space Invader
10 Final Fantasy songs on Piano (By the guy who played Mario Brothers music blindfolded)
Legend of Zelda
World of Warcraft
Mario
Jump by Van Halen (In a Guitar Hero segment)
Halo
Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross
One-Winged Angel
Castlevania

Forever alone

Doesn't look like it'll be coming to Oz anytime soon.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I saw it, the setlist was a bit different though, (saw it last year-ish IIRC) it was still awesome and I'd definately recommend it to just about anybody.

There were ads about it on TV for a few weeks. I'm not sure if it was only the Syndey Opera House though...

Los Angeles

I saw it a few years ago in Los Angeles at the hollywood bowl. Whenever Halo 3 came out, since their big deal was some Halo 3 music and gameplay vid or something.

I really enjoyed the first half, and found the second half to be extremely boring. When they played the music for older games, it was interesting, very different than actually in the game since it was orchestrated instead of 8-bit, etc. For anything FF7 and newer, it was super dull, a bunch of bland modern-classical music that all ran together.

From your list it sounds like they did more classic game stuff and did something better with the FF music.

Yeah, they only did the one bit with Martin Leung, who played ten different songs in a row on piano, then the first part of the finale with One-Winged Angel (And a bunch of damn good cosplay pics to go with it - even someone dressed as that metal head thing that Sephiroth rips off to get to Jenova).

I would kinda say that the first half was more interesting than the second. The God of War bit was epic, and the orchestra did an amazing job of playing the Metal Gear Solid medley (even had someone on the stage with a big exclamation mark, with Tommy in a cardboard box). The second half wasn't bad, to be fair, but the WoW bit was nowhere near as good as the one on the soundtrack, and I would hardly say the two songs in the Chrono Trigger bit were memorable (The Wind's Yearning ~ 600 A.D. and Frog's Theme). Still, Martin Leung was an absolute god of the piano, playing music from Super Mario Brothers (the first half blindfolded!).
