After finding an amazing amount of success with him over the past few weeks, I have adjusted my army to incorporate Librarians more often. This was mainly brought about by the use of Null Zone more then anything. It has consistently led to a stronger and more killy list for my marines. My decision though brings me a bit of sadness, as I do love Chaplains, and am hard pressed to justify their replacing a captain in my list. If I am playing Orks or over Chaos Marines, I will definitely be taking him more, but other then that I will be just taking my Librarian.

I agree. Space Marine Librarians have some of the best powers in the game in terms of their utility and their synergy with Codex: Space Marine army list.

That said, I wish they weren't so easily killed compared to Chaplains, Captains, and their Chaos Space Marine opposite numbers. Captains are the list easily killed, but aside from Command Squads and re-jigging the Force Organization Chart for a Biker army, they don't do much (I miss the days of Rites of Battle from regular Captains). Chaplains are a bit of a medium, and I like my Command Squads.

I was so excited when I saw the name of this topic. And then I saw the forum it was in . . . Sorry I can't contribute to the tactical talk on this one, however. Maybe paint your Ultramarines red and use Mephiston?

The regular SM Librarian is a tremendously versatile unit with a few excellent power selections. Null Zone and Avenger are capable of really messing up a variety of enemy units.

If you are not taking a biker chaplain (and not knowing the rest of your list), I would say simply replace your captain with Cassius.

Cassius and a libby are solid hq choices in a vanilla marine list.

I played my 1st game with a loyalist army the other day. Thought it would be really easy since I"m an experienced CSM player, but little things really threw me off. Halfway through the game it came as quite a shock that Liberians only have 2 wounds to a Sorcerer's 3, and the Librarian has no invo save. The funny part is I perils of the warped on double 1's, rolled a 6 twice in a row for my invo save, and then found out I don't have an invo save when I checked the book to see if I had one. As a chaos player I really do envy psychic hoods, but losing a wound and an invo does suck.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Having to pay 40 pts for a decent invuln save is initially pushed me away from using Librarians...

DO NOT TAKE THIS ADVICE.

Play your army, and for the love of God, this game doesn't need anymore people switching to BA.

As far as Librarians go, they are cheap, and putting them in TA is a great idea, especially with a SS. Null Zone is always amazing, and so is Avenger, Gate of Infinity, and some of the other powers are good too.

An Epistolary with Gate of Infinity and Force Dome, accompanying a unit of Sternguard or Terminators can be pretty fun.

Just a question, why would you give an epistolary force dome and put him with Termies?

True enough, but would it not make more sense to spend 40 points and give him a 2+/3+ and give him a different power instead?

To my mind, no. Indeed, if he was just to get the Terminators around the field - say accompanying a Combat Squad of five Terminators with two Assault Cannons, then I'd remove the Epistolary upgrade, and save 50pts to put elsewhere in the army.

I'm planning on fielding a librarian, but I still have no idea what build to give him. Honestly, Null Zone doesn't seem all that great to me. Most of the opponents I play really don't have invulnerable saves, so it seems kind of useless. My setup that I think I'm going is:
Librarian
+Epistolary
Powers: Gate of Infinity, Avenger

He teleports around with a tactical squad, and Avengers enemies while the Tac Squad Rapid-Fires. Good idea?
