I always wanted to know how to get a job at games workshop.

What are the requirements? Need to know all the races? How to paint. I'd love to work there as a part time job when im older but i don't know if i'd be qualified. One thing i really want to know is if you have to know how to paint really well because all the employees i know can paint and the best i can do is table top quality

I've only been to a GW store once, and it was a horrible experience. Apparently all you need is an annoyingly peppy attitude and the ability to tell people to buy crappy things.

I'm sure painting is kind of important.

So much dream crushing in this thread

Check out GW's job site if you want to know more.

I am sure they will have a "what we are looking for in an applicant" section

With all the down sizing theyre doing, entry level job prospects look pretty slim right now.

And to top it off unless you take huge advantage of the staff discount the pay's not great, just a standard shop job you'll move from once you find something that pays better.

Unless you've got the job through blind devotion, then I guess you'll stay whatever.

I'm coming to get you

My question is, why would you want to? You make terrible money, it's still a retail job, and from GW's history (including recent events), they don't particularly care any more for their employees than their customer base.

Given my hubby is ex-GW staff, and my current friends are about 60%+ GW staff...all I can say is: Part time is fine, Full time SUCKS in a number of ways, even as a fanatic.

What you need to know - at least 2 of the 3 major systems you should be good with the rules and armies, and you should be familar with the 3rd.

You should be able to paint to a reasonable standard, but they will show you all the cheats^H^H^H^H^Htips to help yoiu while you're there. Also you will be expected to have a decent army in each of the systems by the end of yoru probation - and that means painted and based!

Finally, you need to be enthusiastic and be able to smile even when annoying 10yr old boy annoys you for the 100th time that day. For the 7th day in a row (holidays..,..)

One *major* bonus of GW in the UK is that even part timers get the great discount, so you can offset that against the, frankly appalling, pay. You also have a lot of responsibility - unlike most Retail jobs you are in charge of kids, you will probably cash up etc and close the store, even as a part timer - so it is great CV filler in terms of experience and responsibiilty.

Thanks for the help guys. Don't worry about any dream busting. I wasn't looking for some dream job with good pay or anything just something related to what i like to do.

About this army thing, does that mean the shop requires you to pay for all those armies if you want to keep the job?

Inside that little light in your refridgerator

I was recently applying for work in my FLGS and there are a few requirements.

1. You must be over 18 (Glues and paints)
2. You must play/have enough rules knowledge to play at least one of the battle systems (LOTR, WHFB or 40K, not the specialist games)
3. You must be able to work well with people
4. You must be able to dispense grim-dark knowledge to future Grim-darkians

and the usual stuff you need to get a job

Not really, I just dnot normally need to mention him

Well, it was also our 1yr civil partnership anniversary (cant call it marirage, that might offend the church lol ) this last weekend....

Daemon - well, yes - but you dont have to have to, 1500 points of 40k (i.e. tournament minimum) but maybe 1000 points. You also get given a number of models (dependong on how nice the manager is...) and you also have a 50% discount to play with. You used to hvae an even better discount (called "weight order", which for metal models meant paying 1p per figure for Vostroyans instead of £1.50....) but they stopped that just before my hubby started. Grr.

The main thing is - be enthusiastic and enjoy the hobby, and be prepared to come up with col ideas for megagames

Because theyre few and far between?

HO jobs are like golddust. The last one my friend went up for (robins job actually...) there were over 3000 applicants.

I've been tempted at times. Maybe when I finally get a WFB army together. (Spending 6+ hrs per model may not help with that.) I already seem to end up doing unofficial painting clinics at times.

Good point. I will probably try for somewhere like miniwargaming in Canada.

Definitely not my local store though as i live in Hong Kong and local people run it so it isn't nearly as friendly/generous as western ones

Aim high? He got to the last 2! (boy was he gutted, as we all were)

GW doesnt suck, IF you have a good manager who can insulate you from some of the more...asinine....HO demands, and who understands the local needs - for example they have recruit and sustain stores. Recruit stores tend to get people into it, sustain stores support them. If your manager annoys all the regulars (within 2 days of starting...just as an example*) that actually spend money in the store, thinking that the store should be a recruit store, only pain will follow. Unfortunately they have a dearth of good managers right now in some areas. And I say this with 3 friends (including my hubbys best man) being managers - theyre good, but in the minority!

*really happened to our local GW. Guy was a complete and utter fool of the highest order.
