I went into a different store to my local one last week. I was greeted by the guy working there as if he knew me (clearly he did not). FAIL #1
He then went into his preprogrammed ramble about what im i playing. I said im not playing anything at the moment.... He then said "what ahve you been playing before you stopped playing". FAIL #2
I told him that im not playing anything and just want to buy WD and have a look around the store.
He then told me that wasnt ok. FAIL #3
So i started leafing through the latest WD, he then told me "so youre gonna go for that are you?" I told him yeah when ive skimmed it and seen if its worth buying. So he tells me everying thats in it FAIL #4
He then goes into a ramble about do i like blood angels. I say "no". What about "space puppies?"... FAIL #6
By this time im starting to think hes getting desperate. OR that hes starting a mission to to sell me something...
By now im starting to get fed up and ask him just to let me browse, he continues pestering me.. So i dorp the WD and leave the store.
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
my local GW store lets me browse and doesnt sit on my back all the time im there...
I shall not be going back.

Wow. An employee of a retail store greeted you in a friendly manner, made small talk with you about about the products sold at the store, gave you some insightful comments about the product you were looking at, and in general tried to be attentive to his customer. That's horrible. The trials and tribulations you face on a daily basis are immense!

Haha, well, I can kinda agree with the OP. I sometimes find it a little creepy when I walk into the GW store here in Stockholm and -every-single-red-shirt- greets me with a "Hi, how are you" (in that childhood friends-tone of voice) together with that Jehovas-stare they have.
Sometimes I just wanna go in, get my box (while wading through the knee-high crowd) pay and get out. Not smalltalk about how great the spray gun is, or what army I play, or if I've already bought the latest White Dwarf.
Then again, I live in Sweden. It's kinda rare that strangers, even store personell, even acknowledge each other here. In regular stores its a nod and perhaps brief eye contact. So the GW-store is kinda freaking me out.
On another note, it's kinda nice that they have that policy to greet every customer and say "I'm here for you, not the other way around". Last time a redshirt stopped the tutorial game he was playing just to rummage around in the store looking for that last box of killa kanz he knew they had, somewhere.

What you call Fail 1: Sorry, all the employee was doing was trying to make ya feel welcome.
What you call Fail 2: Maybe he was asking you, to learn how to approach you, get a feeling for your intrests and try and steer you in the right direction. After all he is human and cant read minds.
I agree with you on the rest though. Not allowing you to look around, spoiling the WD before you get to read it (thats half the fun) and not respecting Space Wolves in a buisness setting are MAJOR turn offs.
I would have done the same. Op, the first few fails, without knowing exactly what was said, reads like you were being atlittle arogant. Not saying you are, just read that way is all.
I went to a GW store once with a buddie, and wasnt impressed at all. Haven't been back to one sence.

Sorry, really? You're upset that, when you showed interest in White Dwarf, the employee told you about some exciting things in it?
Yeah, you're right. People like that are worse than Hitler. How dare he attempt to engage your interest and, shock horror, assist a customer of his shop? Shocking...

Why are you defending the salesman? I don't disagree with the methods that he is probably forced to use btw, I just have no respect for those who can't read simple body language. I don't care how starved for social interaction this guy was; riding brainscan around the store is a rookie mistake for any salesman to make and they should at least be made fun of for it.
Of course I should mention that all of the OP's complaints become null and void if it turns out that they are a girl, because we know how that ALWAYS GOES at GW stores. I think I'm going to start a thread about those stories now just for laughs.

1) It is part of the 10 commandments to greet EVERYONE coming into the store. SO no, not "Fail 1" - your local store is failing if they arent doing that.
Its called customer service, and its actually a good thing!
2) Your "fail 2" is again, part of the 10 commandments - by saying youre not playing anything right now, it suggests you have an interest, and that might be rekindled - again, doing their job at trying to see where your interests lay. And again, it is actually good customer service.
3) "Fail 4" sounds like you were, frankly, being an arrogant idiot by this point. You might not be, but that is hwo you have come across - and, again, by stating what cool stuff is in there they are trying to get you enthused about it. Again, its called customer service.
4) "Space puppies" is actually a fairly common usage, and not a fail at all. Its called showing humour. Sorry you didnt get it.
All in all - it sounds like your store is actually quite sloppy as it doesnt interact with their customers, and isnt follwiing the GW commandments - plus this store doesnt know you from adam, so is just trying to find out a bit about you. Its what happens when you go to new hobby stores, relax.

Although I don't agree with what most of the OP said I think the salesman was trying to be friendly I can see his point.
I am lucky enough to live pretty much equidistant from two GW shops so I go to which ever one is most convenient at the time however I only game in one of them. On a couple of occasions I have gone in on a Saturday morning to pick up something (e.g. one specific paint that I have run out of). The shop is packed with noisy and annoying kids (god I sound grumpy) and generally my wife who has no interest in my little toys is with me. I find in these situations it is almost impossible to get in buy what I want and get out without appearing rude. Let me just make it clear I am not friends with any of the staff or else if I went in I would be prepared to spend time chatting to a friend rather than just buying some merchandise, I do chat to them quite a bit on most occasions but they do seem to have a mental block for body language that screams I need to be in and out quick before one of these kids covers me in snot.
This may sound like a rant I don't mean it to be I love the way most GW staff are friendly and helpful but sometimes there is a time and place where you just want them to serve you and then let you leave without making you sound rude to them. Perhaps I just need to work on my social skills.

in comparrison to my local GW store that i went in yesterday.
I walked in, was greeted by "HI". I browsed for about 5mins before being approached by staff. First staffer to approach me was someone who didnt know me. He just asked if i need any help. I said "i wanted to browse". Roll the general speil... I told him that i wasnt sure what i wanted to buy. Emphasis on BUY. He then told me he would leave me along to browse and if i wanted him to just to yell..
Now thats what i call perfect service.
I did ask him later where the BA stuff was, he told me that it had sold out and that it would be back in a few hours. I told him "i will be back later". He offered to save me what i wanted to buy from the BA range for when i came back in. BONUS POINTS for customer service there.
I came back 1 latte later. The delivery hadnt been sorted onto the shelves yet. He went and got what i had asked for from downstairs. I paid, chatted about WD and left.
Do you see the difference between the 2 two sales guys? Read the original post.

Yes there is a difference.
Mainly between the first one you mentioned sounds new and tries to do as he was programmed minus taking into account a customer's reaction.
2nd one you described sounds like a veteran staff. Know how to provide you with service while giving you space.
Though the staff have to start somewhere i guess?

Although the employee was only doing his job i can see where he is coming from.
at my local GW they changed managers and now the black shirt alwaysd haggles my to buy something i dont need. like if i mention buying rhinos in the future he asks if i want a razorback; when i tell him he knows i play chaos he says you gotta be dumb not to take up that extra heavy weapons tho, ect ect he is always trying to make a sale with me when he knows if he just lets me be and treats me kindly he will eventually get a sale out of me. i know what i want. Whereas the new GW i got to a little farther away remembers me if i dont stop by for a few months, always polite and respectful and they dont try to push me to buy things.

I'm pretty lucky in that I'm a regular. It's a case of walking in, having whoever is on duty (except the current new guy) wave and say hi and keep doing what they are doing, unless they are bored. Then we generally end up talking about odd topics that may or may not be related to GW.
The times I get 'sale' things it is generally 'Hey, WD is in today' and trying to get me interested (half jokingly, I'll only grab it for certain armies or a good painting article... which means the good painting articles get waved enticingly about) or when there is a new release I might be interested in cannibalising. Oh, and they've been trying to convince me to buy another DE battlebox (only solid DE player about at the moment and they accidentally ordered 2 more than they wanted) because they know I want another raider. Just not at that price.
Still, having light encouragement to go for something I'm already eyeing off is better than having unwanted stuff crammed down my throat.

Well really, your kind of an ass if you think the first guy was just full of fail on his part. From the sounds of it, he was doing perfect customer service. People like you are the worst, from a retail employee stand point. Your shop is perfect and never does wrong, but for some un known reason your not in your perfect shop, so no one can do right by you. Thats pretty gakky to bash this guy for doing what he should of done.
If he really was bothering you so much for coming into his shop and wanting to browse, you could of easily just told him, hey man Im not sure what Im wanting to buy right now, but if you let me browse Ill let you know when I find something. Presto, he will say something for a second or two and leave you alone.
