Columbus, Oh

Missed my scheduled gaming opponent last monday, BUT.... I was lucky enough to make a new friend at the FLGS. Turns out he is a Dakka-ite - Ramos Asura! (aka Andrew).

He brought along his Big Red Waaaagh!
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/250857.page

with pictures of his army here.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/user/15297-Ramos%20Asura.html

That looted Skyray is pretty darn nice in person!

I am working on finishing up my Genestealer heavy army, Hive Fleet Portentosa.. so that is what I had been hauling around.

We decided to do a quick 1000 point battle.

We both had "all comers" lists at 1500, so a quick bit of paring down, and we were ready to do this thing!

Big Red Waaagh -
HQ-
MegaArmored Warboss
Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun

Elites -
5 Mega Armored Nobs (count as troops) (In a Trukk, with Warboss)

Troops-
Trukk Boy mob (Nob w PK, 11 Boyz)
Grot Mob - (3 Runt Herders, plus 25 grots)

Heavy Support-
3 Killa Kans with Grotzookas
Looted Wagon (Skyray, with boomgun)

Hive Fleet Portentosa
HQ-
Warrior Prime (biggerized Genestealer model, not acutally using Genestealer rules - SIGH)

Elite-
2 Zoanthropes

Troops-
15 Genestealers with included Broodlord (fuscia)
20 Stealers (Pink)
10 Stealers (Orange)
10 Stealers (Yellow)

Rolled up Mission - Annihilation... and Deployment ... Dawn of War.

Ramos's roommate was there, and being allegedly neutral, they set up the terrain.

Ramos won the roll for first turn, and had me set up and go first. Quite possibly this was the big tactical blunder of the game.

Setup-
I placed my Genestealer Prime hidden behind a ruin, right on the mid-point line of the board. Fuscia Stealers infiltrade, so they awaited his setup. Ramos decided to place his HQ/Nobs/Trukk as his allowed deployment.. and carefully measured the 18 inch bubble away from the Prime.

Fuscia Genestealers were able to deploy 12 inches away from his trukk in the woods, and JUST also on the line of mid-field. (cue blurry picture)

Ramos declined to attempt to seize the initiative, as he wanted the bottom half of the turn.

Genestealer Turn 1-

Prime does not move, and the Orange Genestealers advance onto the board, as do the Zoanthropes, angling towards where the Prime is lurking. The Fuscia blob moves, runs (with a 6!) and fleets into Assault with the Nob Trukk. Pity it had not moved yet. I managed to move far enough to totally surround the Trukk.

Assault Phase -
Well, gee.. a crap-ton of attacks that auto hit, equals one exploded Trukk. No nobs were hurt in the blast, but 3 Genestealers sadly lost their lives.

Ork Turn 1-

After blinking for a second about his trukk going away, Ramos decides to bring on MOST of the remainder of his forces. The Trukk Boyz hurtle on in the east, moving a full 18 inches to try to get close to the Prime. The Looted Skyray slides on in the west, just far enough to get onto the table, and promptly rolls a "1" on the Don't Press Dat! chart and turns 180 and tries to flee the table. The Kans clank on, and run 3 inches, lurking in the backfield. He decides to keep the Big Mek and Grot Mob in reserves.

Shooting -
The Nobs and Warboss open up with the TL shootas into the Fuscia Stealers, killing 5. The Looted Skyray cannot fire.

Assault-
The Nobs charged the Fuscia Genestealers, and lost 2 of their number, to 4 more genestealers, leaving the Broodlord and 2 bugs alive. I totally forgot about the Broodlord's Psychic ability to prevent a model from striking. Arrgh. However, the bugs tied the orks, so the combat continued into turn 2.

(I totally forgot to take a picture of this turn)

Genestealers Turn 2-

Rolling for reserves, I got the Yellow squad of 10 bugs, and they came in on the Western edge.. oooooh! Looted Skyray looks yummy from this angle!

The Zoanthropes float along to get a good view of the remaining Trukk, while the Prime vacates the ruin and heads into the woods, along with the Orange Stealers.

Yellow Stealers move, run (roll a 6 AGAIN!) and fleet into the Looted Skyray.. and find out they are 1 inch too short! Rats and Drat!!!

Shooting-

The Zoes crakle with Warp Lance energy, and blow the Trukk into the air.. and it lands, rolls BACKWARDS 17 inches! and almost leaves the table.. exploding and singeing the Boyz inside.. "Wait.. we wuz just here?"

Assault -

The Genestealers lose 1 and the Broodlord takes 2 wounds, the Ork Nobz take 1 wound.. the combat continues as the Stealers make their Morale check with a 3. Broodlord tried to stop the Warboss from hitting, but failed. However, Ramos has a genius ability to roll 1's on his dice, so.. it worked out.

Orks Turn 2-

Reserves.. the Big Mek declines to join the fight at the moment, but the Grot Mob does. They come onto the field to support the footsloggin' Trukk Boyz on the east side. Trukk Boyz and Grots both elect to Run, and move 1 inch.

The Kans continue forward, and the Looted Skyray moves along the backfield a couple inches and draws a bead on the Orange Stealers in the wood.

Shooting -

Looted tank picks off ONE genestealer in the woods. The Killa Kans all target their Grotzookas on the Prime, and not a shot lands on target. Left, right, forward and back.. none of them templates the Prime. To add insult, they failed to get into the woods for some krumpin' on the Prime.

Assault -
The Broodlord manages to perplex the Warboss finally! The remaining Stealer picks off the wounded Nob, leaving 2 Nobs and the Warboss alive. The remaining 2 Nobs eliminate the genestealer unit. Drat. Oh well, they whittled those MANz down a bit.

Genestealer Turn 3-

Rolling for the last unit of Genestealers, they come! Heck, they even come onto the board where I want them to, the eastern edge..

The Zoanthropes move towards the Kans, as do the Orange Stealers and the Prime. The Yellow Stealers run and assault the Looted Skyray.

The Pink Stealers move, run (another great roll .. a 5!) and Fleet into Assault with BOTH the Trukk Boyz AND the Grot Mob.

Shooting -
The Zoanthropes target the Kans, blowing a DCCW off one of them.

Assault -
Orange Stealers and Prime pile into the Kans, destroying the 2 they can get to. The big Pink Stealer clutch eliminate 15 Grots and 10 Trukkers with a loss of 2 (one to the Orks, one to the Grots).. running down and wiping out both mobs. OUCH!

Yellow Genestealers explode the Looted Ray, and lose 2 of their number in the blast, but hang tough and consolidate towards the Nobs.. as do the Pink Stealers.

Ork Turn 3-

Rolling for reserves.. the Big Mek declines again.

The Killa Kan sees the writing on the wall and prepares to sell itself dearly.. and the Nobz advance on the Yellow Stealers. Short movement phase.

Shooting -
The Kan blasts the Grotzooka into the Stealers, but only manages to wound one, and the cover save is made. The Nobz soften up the Yellow Stealers with some TL Shoota fire, and kill 2.

Assault-
Kan charges the Orange Stealers, and is eliminated before it can strike. Nobz charge the Yellows, and in a furious fight, the 1 of the remaining Nobs is killed, and one wounded, for the cost of 3 Stealers, leaving 3. Tied combat, continues next turn.

Genestealer Turn 4-

The Prime, Zoanthropes, Pink and Orange Stealers head towards the MANz.. as they are all that is left.

No Shooting.

Assault-
The Yellow stealers end up reduced to 2 models, and the Orks go down to the Warboss. Another tie and they sticks it out to the bitter end!

(no picture)

Orks Turn 4-

The Big Mek flicks his cigar out, and saunters onto the board.. prime firing position in the far NW corner of the board, and readies that SAG.

No shooting

Assault-
Warboss takes no wounds, and kills one Genestealer, leaving 1, who makes the morale check!

Genestealer Turn 5-

Pink Genestealers, thanks to moving, a good run, and fleet, swamp the Warboss. Orange Stealers, Prime, and Zoanthropes continue to slide across the board towards the SAG.

Assault-
The Pink Blob pretty much minces the Warboss before he has a chance to do much more than say "Whut?". They consolidate towards the SAG as well. For ease of movement, they just kinda got shoved as the blob..

Orks Turn 5-

At this point, the Orks are down to the Big Mek and his trusty Ammo Grot.

No Movement.

Shooting -
With a WHIRRRRRRR the SAG gets the BEST possible roll.. a 10! (6 and 4). The pie plate smacks on top of the Pink blob, and Ramos rolls Maximum Deviation on the scatter.. sending the plate off the board. But Wait! Ammo Grot to the rescue! The reroll was perfect hit. 9 Genestealers die to the warp hole. They make their Morale and keep coming.

As it is bottom of 5.. we check to see if the game ends. Ramos would like the game to end, so he doesn't get tabled, so he uses one of his low rollin' dice to check.. and of course it rolls a "5" and we head into turn 6.

Genestealer Turn 6-

Movement.. well.. everything moves and runs to get to that SAG.. and nobody gets close enough. I do spread out a bit for this turns shooting though.. lol.

Ork Turn 6-

SAG does not move, and fires again, this time killing 3 Orange Genestealers and 6 Pinkies, who make THEIR Morale and continue on.. albeit with a large HOLE in the squads..

Once again, Ramos rolls for end of game, and .. gets a 6 this time. So, onto turn 7.

Genestealer Trun 7-

All Orange Stealers and the lone Yellow, jump the Big Mek and tear him apart. Pinks and Prime watch.

Game ends, Orks eliminated.

After Battle Thoughts

I think that Ramos really hamstrung himself by allowing me the chance to go first. That pretty much eliminated all mobility he had, and he was unable to recover. To be fair, though, he has not had the experience of fighting against Genestealers before.. and certainly ain't gonna make that mistake again. I will be taking more Broodlords for sure, in the future.. the ability to prevent a model from attacking, WS7, and 3 wounds all for 46 points? Damn!

Models of the Match-
Orks- Big Mek with the Shokk Attack Gun.. single handedly killed 25% of my army.. in 2 turns
Genestealers- Pink Brood - totally eliminated Trukk Boyz, Grots (not too proud of that) and the Warboss. (Honorable mention to Fuscia Brood for tarpitting the MANz)

Sub Par Performers-
Orks- Ramos's Dice.. quite possibly the worst die rolling by Nobz I have ever seen.. rolling low when wanting high, and vice versa
Genestealers - Prime.. just a big walking target. Killed 1 Kan, and else, nada. I have to have an HQ.. but ...

Thanks for the batrep, i enjoyed reading it!

A quick matter-of-fact regarding the broodlord's hypnotic gaze psychic power: it can only be cast on the broodlord's assault phase. This means that even at best case, the broodlord will only be negating the attacks 1/2 of the time in cc. Of course, with his high Int, he should have no trouble smacking first regardless.

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

Wow, that's a lot of 'stealers. I've been playing around with stealer-heavy lists at higher point values, but I rarely get above 40 total, and that includes some Ymgarl. I don't leave home w/o Toxin Sacs, though, which ups the price tag a bit. Thanks for sharing!

(Did you agree that the forest completely blocked LoS? If not, your stealers shouldn't have been able to infiltrate that close - if any enemy model can see the unit, they have to be more than 18" away when infiltrating; you only get the 12" deployment when no one can see you.)

While it does indeed warm the cockles of my heart to see the ol' Imperial Battle Bunker once more... you need some terrain. That table is virtually empty and what's there is flat. Really... more terrain.

Columbus, Oh

We were limited by what terrain was available. While it was a bit low, there were 7? other games running, and we wanted to avoid mixing terrain styles. We just used what "looked" right.

@Janthkin

I took a look last night at the rule, and you are right. We had been playing that Infiltrators could be placed 12" away if they were in cover, not "Hidden from line of sight", although we HAD ruled that you could not see thru more than 2" of woods..

@tetrisphreak

I forgot to take a look at that this morning, during the game, one of the kibitzers had mentioned "every combat phase the broodlord does XXX" and we just rolled with it..

I could be wrong since the biomorphs aren't listed, but for 1000 points your 55 genestealer list (plus a broodlord) seems to be at best 30 points over limit, and that's with no biomorphs given to any models.

Warrior prime - 80
2x zoeys - 120
15 stealers - 210
-broodlord - 60
20 stealers - 280
10 stealers - 140
10 stealers - 140

Total - 1030

Just something i noticed.

@porkuslime - I like the 2" woods LOS rule. I might try to introduce it to my local gaming group but i doubt it'll take hold. I have too many IG and Marine opponents who go "True LOS! I can see that genestealer's nipple so i'm going to shoot it!!!" lmao

Columbus, Oh

Broodlord is a +46 to the list, not a +60, he replaces a genestealer.. and since my opponent went over on his point limit with the Grot Mob Runtherds, he didn't mind my going over by 16. No Biomorphs in my list, raw bodies.

We only really use the 2" rule for large felt forests and woods.. the store has tree stands and we can make actual forests, and in that case, we DON"T use the 2" rule.

Stealers are so damn nasty....

This battle marked the rise of what I like to call "the Cult of Onesie"
Always had a dice that would hide with its fellows, and when I needed it for a really important roll it always rolled a one. I would set it aside, and it somehow continues to rejoin the rest of the dice. Now it's influence is spreading.
I considered smashing onsie right after this game, but That would probably end up making him a martyr "He was Smashed for your sins" type of deal...

Anywho.... It was a great game, even for all the mistakes I made.

Nice batrep dude. stealers sure can be nasty.

Unlucky Ramos, you gave it a good go! You should try taking a 10 man Nob squad (painboy, waaagh banner, half claws half big choppas) and a warboss w/ big choppa in a battlewagon. My regular opponent plays this all the time and they dominate my 'Nids. I mean really bad! Tyrants, tyrant guard, stealers, warriors w/ boneswords. You name it, they'll break it!

Nice batrep anyway!

Sure.. here they are in my gallery.. (gonna take better pics this week I hope) The majority of the stealers are not up there yet, but there is one unit. Mostly Warriors, homemade plastic Lictors, and Carnis at the moment.
