Hello everyone. i used to play 40k about 2-3 years ago. i played tyranids and orks. my tyranid army is so horribly out of date i decided to update my orks. However the roster i used to use is no longer legal. is all my models now garbage? i need some help. I dont play competive but like to win

Can anyone help me on the right track to make the models i have playable again with minimal conversions and gimpage?

Old speed freaks army list (im not going to list everything and all gears unless you really want it)
1500 points
HQ
Gobstomp the nadkikka
big mek eavy armor with a burna
He had 3 other meks with him in his retinue
He had his own special converted trukk :( with a custom build top :( with a red paint job (i think this is still legal haha)

Troops
Burna boys with their own custom converted trukk with open top (looks like in 5th edition they cant have a trukk /cry
ogmug weldzbad mek choppa custom force field
9 burna boys 5 with choppa 4 with burna

4 more troop units of trukk boys
each unit had a nob with slugga choppa
9 trukk boys 8 with slugga choppa and one with burna
Big shootas on the trukks
*looks like these 4 units are still legal and can now be bigger? trukks transport 12 now instead of 10?!

1 unit of tankbustas
9 boys 6 have slugga and choppa 3 have rokkit launchas all had frag stickbombz and tankbusta bombs.
1 nob with choppa and rokkit launcha
They have a trukk open top with rokkit launcha

Here is my main problem below!!

Heavy
3x Guntrukks. With customs enclosed tops and caps with zzap guns.
alot of work went into these.
2 of these trukks were one unit and 1 was a single unit

1 looted basilisk with armored top. alot of custom work done on this one as well. i assume now this has been demoted to a looted wagon :(

I recently bought to help my army.
3 warbikes
3 defcopters
1 battlewagon

So i have those to work with as well. Im not asking for you to build me an army. im just trying to make best legal use in 5th for these units above. any suggestions welcome.

I spend so long converting and building this above army i played it once before i have to scrap it. im hoping its salvagable. it was alot of fun.

Still legal as Big Mek with a burna and 'eavy armor. The Meks can't be a retinue anymore, so that's illegal. But see below

Troops
Burna boys with their own custom converted trukk with open top (looks like in 5th edition they cant have a trukk /cry
ogmug weldzbad mek choppa custom force field

Still legal as Big Mek with KFF

9 burna boys 5 with choppa 4 with burna
Burna boys now have to be all burnas. 4 burnas and 3 meks are legal, though, so move the mek retinue from above to here. Leaves you 5 Choppa boys to add to trukk mobs. Can no longer have a Trukk, but can be in a Looted Wagon, and you could call your custom job a looted wagon.

4 more troop units of trukk boys
each unit had a nob with slugga choppa
9 trukk boys 8 with slugga choppa and one with burna

Burnas aren't legal in boyz mobs anymore. Move them to a Burna Squad, to max of 15. You can move the 5 choppaboyz in here wt up your trukk boyz to 12. Nobs need Klaws. All of them. Always.

1 unit of tankbustas
9 boys 6 have slugga and choppa 3 have rokkit launchas all had frag stickbombz and tankbusta bombs.

Still legal, but again only Rokkit Launcha's are allowed in a Busta squad. And 3 is below minimums. Move the Rokkits into the Trukk squads, and fill in with the Slugga/choppa boys.

1 nob with choppa and rokkit launcha

Can only be used as TankBusta Nob now. With one more Rokkit Boy, you've got a legal squad.

They have a trukk open top with rokkit launcha

Usable as Warbuggies, but Zapp guns are gone from mobile small units. Maybe mod the ZZaps into Skorchas?

1 looted basilisk with armored top. alot of custom work done on this one as well. i assume now this has been demoted to a looted wagon :(

Looted Waggon with Boomgun. Nothing wrong with that

thank you Creon. its kinda sad that it cant be topped tho. Those guntrukks as buggies?
ouch.
Well now i have less than 1000 points and it seems like a hodgepodged army. no offense to you. i really appreciate the help.
Any suggestions with the included 3 new bikes 3 new defcoptas and 1 battlewagon?
At this point my tyranid army is more suited to play. i can at least use all my units. im just missing the powerhouse units like the termagore and trygon/mawloc

may just go that route. thank you for the input.

My first suggestion (and it's not intended to be rude) is to buy the current Ork codex! It's not a big investment, and you can then spend some time crunching lists. All long-term Ork players have gone through the process of modifying existing models. It's painful to have to alter a carefully converted model - or consign it to the display cabinet - but after a while the possibilities in the new list start to inspire new creations.

The Battlewagon is a worthwhile addition - Battlewagons are generally better now, although they lost the twin-linked weapons. The new kit needs some work, as most Ork players regard it as somewhat undersized, and you may want to acquire the additional sprue the GW omitted from the kit as it includes a rather nice deffrolla (which has recently been clarified as being effective against enemy vehicles).

The Deffkoptas are also pretty good. Looking at your current list, I would split them into 3 units of 1, and give each one rokkits and perhaps a buzz-saw. They can then go tank-hunting.

Three Warbikes won't do much (no change there). You'll need another 3 to make a useful unit.

Don't give up on the Orks and succumb to the lure of da bugs!

Hello. thanks for the reply. Current codex? only one i see if from 2-3 years ago. Is that the one you are referring to? Is there a 5th edition codex?

In all honesty I think ill wait it out. I really dont want to trash all these models to make an army that sorta works when a 5th edition codex should come out and change everything again. No offense but with the Nids i know what im looking at currently and somewhat in the future and any investments at this point will be current and hopefully not nerfed or obsoleted again. No offense to ork players but i dont think now is the time for me to get back into orks or ill just end up being disappointed....again.

Greetings, and I see you're off to a good start with bad assumptions.

The Ork Codex came out immediately before 5th edition, and was created to be compatible with the 5th edition ruleset. I don't anticipate a new codex anytime soon; if $20 is beyond you....*shrugs*

I can honestly tell you that the only reason an ork player would have to be disappointed in orks is through their own tactical incompetence and inability to write a coherent list - which holds true for virtually every codex (perhaps save Necron, and maybe Sisters).

It came out about 2 years ago, I think (is it really that long already?). Dashofpepper commented that it was intended to be compliant with 5th Edition, and it mostly is; it's certainly unlikely to be revised for some time.

You mention being 'disappointed' - it's worth bearing in mind that the 3rd Edition codex was nearly 10 years old when it was replaced, and even the Speed Freeks list was several years old, so it was inevitable that they were going to make some units obsolete and make significant changes to others. There was a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth when the 'new' codex didn't contain absolutely everything that everyone wanted; while it wasn't perfect by any means (Tankbustas - grrr) it had a lot of good stuff in it, and most Ork players have moved on.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see whether the new nids float your boat. There's been a lot of complaining about that codex from established nid players.

A friend of mine recently stopped playing orks for nids. He wanted to try out his first bug army against me. It didnt go well. My flash gitz in a a battlewagon destroyed 4 of his 6 monstroud creatures, slaughtering a whole brood of carnifex in 1 volley followed by assault, His gargoyles got annihlated by my vulcha boyz, and my kommandos popped in on his zoanthrope ending it's reign of terror turn 3... he is now playing orks again, bwahahah

Hello everyone once more. i Reread my posts. I need to provide some background. First off i apologize for my reactions. When i quit 40k i lost the 2 people i played with. I think later picked up WoW (world of warcraft). Ive recently broke free from that but i think it effected my online communication with people drastically in a negative way. So...im on my way to hobbytown to pick up the 4th/5th ed codex (Good call Tailgunner) [I do have army builder tho and was using that to look at the new units and stats. i realize it doesnt tell me everything] Also going to check at hobbytown and see if anyone still plays there or locally somewhere. im not looking to play competitive but have the powergamer/geared mindset that i got from playing Wow instead of the use what you have good sportsman mindset. i bought 6 power klaws for my nobs off ebay (thanks again creon) and will remod those with claws in my ork boyz units. Im not happy with my HQ and will maybe use the warboss on a bike with some bikers because that combo seems to work well. I am going to retire the Guntrukks to the shelves. and add maybe 5-6 units of boyz in trukks instead. I will howevery have to buy more boys. Im going to check out the nids as i mentioned before. I need to quit complaining and get playing. Talk to you guys soon with a update in a couple days!
