So I had a great time, ran into some of the best players there, and had a heck of a close run for a ticket. On to the reports!

My List:

HQGrimnar
Elites
Lone Wolf w/Power Weapon
Lone Wolf w/Power Weapon
Dreadnought w/Assault Cannon and Heavy Flamer (In case I ran into 24 Bloodcrushers.....)
Troops
3 Squads of 5 Grey Hunters w/Meltaguns in Heavy Bolter Razorbacks, each w/an attached Wolf Guard w/Combi-Melta
1 Squad of 5 Grey Hunters w/Flamer in Heavy Bolter Razorback and an attached Wolf Guard w/Combi-Flamer
6 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armor, 1 Stormbolter/PW, 2 Wolf Claw/SS, 1 w/2 Wolf Claws, 1 Cyclone/Power Weapon/Stormbolter, 1 Cyclone/Chainfist/Stormbolter
Heavy Support
3 Squads of 6 Longfangs w/5 Missile Launchers in Assault Cannon Razorbacks

Game 1:
So turns out I got rated as the second lowest comp at the tournament and the only bastard below me was my first round opponent

Modified DoW w/3 Objectives spaced between deployment zones. Objectives were boobytrapped to hurt people 1/3 of the time but didn't play a part in our game
Victory Conditions:
Primary: Most Objectives (12pts)
Secondary: Keep them out of your deployment zone (5pts)<-----Not getting this this game
Bonus 1: Kill all heavy support (2pts)
Bonus 2: Keep your most expensive troop unit alive (1pt)

Opponents List-Daemons!!!!!!
Bloodthirster
Skulltaker on Juggernaught
3 Squads of 8 Bloodcrushers w/Icon, Instrument, Fury of Khorne
2 Squads of 8 Bloodletters
1 Daemon Prince w/wings, armor, strength I think

So thank god I put that dreadnought in. This game could easily just knock both of us out of the tournament if he wants to play conservatively. Thank god he comes to roll dice and punch people in the face so we actually had a game of it.

Turn 1:
It's DoW so I just put down Logan and his attached Termies at the top of my deployment zone. He has first turn and takes advantage of it, getting his preferred wave and landing 16 Bloodcrushers, Skulltaker, and the Bloodthirster in positions to hem me into my deployment zone. He also lands his bloodletters in difficult near an objective which he runs to and claims while hiding behind a wall . Everyone on his turn runs closer.

My turn I roll on everything else in my army. My long fangs move on and deploy on a hill in the corner to give them hopefully 2 turns of shooting before the beating commences. Logan moves up into assault range of the bloodthirster since I can't have things with wings alive as they'll be able to catch my transports. Troop transports split and 2 head toward each outer objective, leaving the one in the middle to the bloodletters. Not a lot of shooting, maybe 2 wounds to some bloodcrushers from the assault cannons and I wounded the Bloodthirster 1 with my 4 cyclones and stormbolters. I charge the Bloodthirster and he kill my basic terminator and dies. FIRST BLOOD NOT FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!!!

Turn 2:
Now it gets ugly. He moves up one unit of bloodcrushers to assault the dread since it'll just assault them next turn and it's his best chance to kill it. Skulltaker and his bloodcrushers run up and charge Logan and friends. All the rest of his reserves come in.......and he uses Icons to keep me hemmed in. So in assault he glances and shakes the dreadnought with a ton of st6 attacks so my dread happily stands there. Logan and his termies kill 3-4 Bloodcrushers in exchange for 3 terminators but he makes his fearless saves.

My turn 2 I move my 4 razorback mounted troops a little farther out to make sure they can't be caught and line up my lone wolves to keep the combat with logan going at least till the end of his next turn. My missiles and assault cannons open up and down 2 bloodcrushers and wound a few more. I don't touch his daemon prince with my other 5 missiles.....Logan lives thru the combat but doesn't actually wound anyone. The one lonewolf lives and then dies to fearless wounds causing a single wound to skulltaker who now has 2 wounds on him. Logan has 2 wounds left. Dreadnought stands there with bloodcrushers and the fury of khorne guy doesn't rend. GO GO DREADNOUGHT POWER!

Turn 3:
His daemon prince assaults a squad of 5 long fangs and his bloodcrushers assault another one. His other squad of bloodletters assaults a assault cannon razorback. The daemon prince kills all the fangs without taking a wound and the other fangs all die to the crushers again without causing a wound. The assault cannon can't shoot next turn on the razorback and Grimnar finally dies leaving skulltaker's squad w/him and 3 friends. Fury of Khorne still no rends and the dread is standing in a see of crushers.

Two of my razorback squads w/meltas make their move on the middle objective since it's unlikely his other letters will get back to an objective. I unload both squads and rapid fire into the bloodletters (mistake, should have rapid fired one squad and pistoled/assaulted with the other to keep them from getting the charge). Kill 2....yes just 2. The razorbacks start peppering the two free squads of bloodcrushers and kill 3 from the non skulltaker squad and 1 from skulltakers. Longfangs try and take out the daemon prince before he gets them, do a single wound and crap their pants. Again the dread stands strong!!!!

Turn 4:
His daemon prince assaults the remaining longfangs. His bloodcrushers start to head back to take out the guys of mine behind them. Stopping to kill 2 assault cannon razorbacks on the way. The longfangs though actually put 2 more wounds on the daemonprince in close combat and push the combat. His blood letters move out of cover and assault and kill one of my grey hunter squads. Fury of Khorn finally gets a rend and pen! But rolls a 3 and gets rid of my DCCW.

So I move my other GH's so that the bloodletters have no cover and position my razorbacks the same way. 2 TL HB's, 1 Melta, and 10 Bolter shots later the bloodletters are gone. The rest of my remaining razors fire at the non skulltaker squad and take it down to just 2 wounded crushers. The daemon prince finishes off my longfangs without dying. Oh and the dread is still alive

Turn 5:
Skulltaker and his two friends close in on one objective that the flamer razorsquad is parked on but are to far out of charge. The other two bc's head toward the center objective to kill my 6 man squad. The daemon prince takes flight and lands so that he might be able to get to me next turn if there is one. Bloodletters kill the last AC razorback

I move my Flamer GH's razorback back just a little and open fire on skulltakers unit doing 3 wounds and Skulltaker fails his last save! Only 2 bc's left now! On the other side I move my GH's into terrain and run toward the center objective. HB's open up and don't do anything to the remaining bc's in the 2 man squad or the daemon prince. Dread lives!

Turn 6: Thank god we rolled this or it would have been 0-0 since I forgot to get out to claim the objectives.
He moves up and contests the right objective that my flamer GH are on. His bloodcrushers roll up to the edge of terrain in the middle. His prince flys and lands in front of my guys in difficult terrain and snaps his own ankles taking his 4th wound and out of the game. Dread lives

So I catch the khorne spirit of just seeing how much damage you can do and unload the flamer squad and rapid fire into the bloodcrushers killing......none! not even a wound!!!! Heavy bolter also failed me. In the middle though the combination of 3 TL HB's, a melta and 10 bolters finished off the two wounds left in the center BC unit. Dread lives again!

Game ends with me holding 2 objectives to 0. So final score was 14-3

MVP: Dreadnought, 10 turns of tying up 8 bloodcrushers saved me the game. That and my opponent wanting to roll dice instead of settling for knocking us both totally out of the Tournament in game one. If the dread does nothing the rest of the tourney I still think he was worth it after this game.

Game 2:

Reverse KP’s.

Primary: Most units alive at the end of the game not counting dedicated transports (12)
Secondary: Kill all enemy HQ’s (5pts)
Bonus: Your most expensive troop unit is alive (1pt), Your HQ killed one of the enemy HQ (2pt)

His List:
Mephiston
Librarian w/Bloodlance and something else
Furioso w/Blood Talons
Sanguinary Priest w/Jump Pack and Power Weapon
3x5 Assault Marines w/PF and Melta in a TL-Lascannon Razorback
10 Assault Marines w/PF, 2 Meltas
5 Death Company w/2 PF’s in a Rhino
2xBaal Pred’s w/Flamestormes and Heavy Bolters
2 Multi-Melta Speeders

So this list isn’t nearly as scary as the 24 Bloodcrushers in DoW but I haven’t played against BA’s yet so it could be interesting.

Basically this one I can write a little faster since I went first. First turn I popped 2 transports and both speeders (got to love squadron rules ). Mephi moved up and one of the TL-Lascannons immobilized a Razorback. Turn 2 I killed his dread and another of his Razorbacks and kept the other from shooting. I also killed a few of his death company. His baal’s fail to come in but his assault marines do. They drop behind 2 grey hunter squads on the side and blow the gun off one of my razorbacks. Mephi and his death company charge logan’s squad and all of mephi’s stuff goes off except for his gaze. He goes against the squad and only hits 3 times even with re-rolls and I saved 2. My claws killed off his Death Company before they could swing and Logan dropped 4 wounds onto Meph. Meph broke and was running away and I moved up to help him keep running . Turn 3 I made a mistake that would contribute to me losing overall and general. I decided to soften up a squad that had the wounded librarian in it before logan would charge and kill the HQ for a bonus objective and did enough wounds that he had to take an armor save with him. He failed it and this was after meph got rended to death by an assault cannon. 2pts gone….. His baal’s came on and killed a long fang pack and hurt 2 troop units but eventually went down and it turned into a turn 4 tabling. 18-0 me.

Mission 3: Modified Capture and Control. Each side had 2 objectives and to destroy it you needed a model with a ws to control it at the end of a player turn.
Primary: Each Destroyed Enemy Objective (6pts)
Secondary: Each of you Objectives alive at the end (3pts)
Bonus: HQ destroyed an Objective (2pts)

His List: Dark Eldar, Wych Cult
Lelith w/8 wyche retinue in a Raider w/Dark Lance
5 Warriors w/Dark Lance in a Raider w/Dark Lance
4x9 Wyches w/Succubus and Agoniser in Raider w/Dark Lance
3xRavagers w/2 Dark Lances and 1 Disentegrators

So again I pulled first turn and he decided to stay in reserve except for two units that he put out probably to help him hold on to his objectives in case I got to them before he got on the table. I moved up with all my mounted squads and killed both raiders and their units in my turn so he didn’t have a turn 1. Turn 2 I moved up and exploded 1 objective and again shift a little closer (beginning of a costly mistake). Turn 2 he gets 3-4 raiders/ravagers and again loses all of them to the shooting phase with a couple of wyches that fall out being pinned. Turn 3 I kill the last objective and center myself more. He gets the rest of his army except for his last Ravager. He boosts up with Lelith and one other squad toward one of my objectives held by my Long Fangs and his other 2 Raiders do the same thing toward my other long fang held objective. Turn 4 I don’t move logan w/friends toward my objective on my left and it costs me 3 points. Basically the remainder of the game he knocked out one of my objectives and long fang squads causing me to go from 18 to 15. My win 15-6

that sounds like an awesome game!

Quick question though, why did you put assault cannons on your longfang razorbacks rather than lascannons?

More shots against horde armies. Better avg. armor pen on anything AV13+. More shots is better! It's my inner ork really

I have enough anti-light mech in the form of 19 missiles. 4 of which were regularly tank hunting this weekend thanks to logan which essentially made them LC's.

How silly of your opponent to land the greater daemon in position to be assaulted by your termies and charge crushers into a dreadnote. Completely backwards.

It's not like hte dread was ever really challenged as it was just a normal Crusher with rending. Now a Herald with Unholy Might is an entirely different story.

When demons come into play they do this thing called deep strike scattering. It was terribly stupid of him to deep strike scatter towards the termies. If he was smart he would have rolled a 'hit'

24 bloodcrushers with no fateweaver versus 19 missile launchers and a dreadnought, 16 total 5+ armored troop models in an objective claiming game? No, i think it resolved just like I'd expect it to.

Great write up hulksmash, I'm looking forward to reading about game 5. i didn't really get a chance to hear how that went down.

DoW with Turn 1 as Daemons is really tough. At least if the opponent has to reserve his army only half (statistically) comes in on Turn 2. In DoW he could respond perfectly to what is a really slow army and just chew it up piece by piece.

I tend to agree with BBF for another scenario that he would have made a better showing but it is awful difficult to do well in those circumstances.

Given the BT can fly though, he may have deployed him tad too aggressively....

@BBF

You might have missed that part where I said specifically that it was charge and get 20 ST6 and 4 ST6 Rending attacks or be charged and have 3 St5 Rending attacks. That was his choice. Your totally right man, he must have been an idiot to give himself the best chance to take it out since it was gonna get him anyway. And the Thirster scattered into range. Since his run move wouldn't take him out of it he just moved it up to brawl. It was either that or go down to missiles while my termies back away. It helped draw in my main combat unit by making me unable to escape the BT, Skulltaker, and 8 more crushers. Yep, he should probably learn how to play.....

@Calypso2ts

DoW helps daemons tremendously. Most heavy/multi shot weapons can't shoot turn 1 since they moved onto the board. Meaning he's got a full turn of being safe from really nasty shooting. If it had been mission 2 It would have gone down much differently and a major win for me cause I'd have had an extra shooting phase and he'd be left with 3 units at the end of the game.

He could have left it 2-3 if he wanted to be a dick. 8 bloodcrushers on each objective would have been nearly impossible to dislodge with my army but he came to play and to give us both a chance at being in the tourney.

And he originally tried to deploy the thirster behind his crushers. It scattered in front and to the side which is how he wound up so close. Then it only ran 3" which was still easily in charge range so he moved forward and forced me to deal with him turn 1 or risk him jumping to and removing my shooting and my best chance at getting rid of the wings.

Ahh, that looks to be Sergio's list. Pretty solid compostition IMO. First turn against rhino/razorback based blood angels was clutch.

Don't beat yourself up on that pair of bonus points. That was an exceptionally difficult score to make. I managed to get it with serious luck and i suspect a little bit of charity from my opponent. But you have to be focusing on playing 40k first, and then doing the little mini games second. Hard to complain about 18 points hehe

Keep the reports coming! The much maligned mission 3 batrep should be quite interesting.

Still sounds like a bad call on the BT drop. Everybody will just write it off to a bad scatter. Seeing the BT was the only unit capable of taking out the dreadnote, yeah he should have sucked up all the shooting. As you noted the BT killed one terminator.

@BBF

But he dropped the BT before the dread was on the table BBF. It was DoW and he went first. The only unit on the table was Grimnar and his boyz. He could have centered it but I would still have been able to manuever the dread to where I wanted it since I got to come in after his drop. One of his units would have been tied up regardless. And his flying DP could have killed the dread too. Heck 10 turns of combat something more than losing an arm should have happened, especially when you count getting the charge.

@Shep

I wouldn't feel so bad about 18 if I hadn't had the librarian in the bag. I had the charge set up perfectly to get logan into b2b w/the librarian and should have just not shot the dang unit A couple of those little mistakes cost me the tournament as you'll see in the rest of my reports.

If you think about daemons should have the advantage going first in DoW deployment since the initial drop dictates how you will move onto the table. Did the prince come in hte 2nd wave? I dont mean to downplay your win though.

Nice reports, keep em coming. I found a lot of the bonus points were weird or difficult to get unless you had the right opponent, but maybe that's just because a lot were HQ related and my HQ did nothing all weekend.

Me too! The mission where my HQ was meant to kill the other HQ was against a Thunderwolf Lord, hahah, yeah right!

Or the mission where you had to pop an objective with an HQ unit? Yeah right again, my HQ has to stay near the blob squad and shoot, he doesn't go anywhere.

As an aside, the reason a lot of the bonus points were HQ oriented was two fold:

A lot of people seemed to think a good chunk of the missions favored Mech Guard or Razorspam. Making those two points require an HQ unit means that the guy who shows up with the Parking lot army has to be more aggressive/take more risks if he wants those two points. Also, assault armies are pretty overpowering in 40k and requiring Pedro to step out of his LRC to collect an extra two points means that those kinds of armies have to take more risks if they want the full 20, as well.

The second reason is that most of the bonus objectives (at least the 1-3 pointers) were there as a means for someone who was getting their poop pushed in to save some face and pick up a couple extra points in what would otherwise be a total skunking. This has the side bonus of stratifying the points so its not just a bunch of 0s and 20s when it comes time to pair rounds or determine the prize winners.

Hope that sheds some light on it.

I'm sure we'll have some lively discussions on future mission ideas since you can start playtesting them now and Scott can use the Con RTT's as a test bed for a broader result and better feedback. I have to say. I've seen very few TO's who are so open to criticism before and after an event to make it better or tweak things based on feedback. You guys just keep up the overall good work

And I'm writing up mission 3 I swear

I liked the HQ related bonus points. I just didn't achieve them! There were probably...7 or 9 points during the weekend that I could have gotten just by paying better attention sooner, and it is no ones fault but my own.

Librarian had unleash rage as his 2nd power.

I actually got first turn that game, but I only had 3 las cannons from the razorbacks that could hit anything on your side of the table ( I think I stopped two of the razorbacks from shotting).

In hindsight, I should have scouted the baals up to flame a missile launcher squad or two instead of flanking since I had first turn and gone up a side instead of the center.

I'll have to say it was a learning experience, and I ended up switching dice after that game for the rest of the weekend.
