In Episode 54 we bring you games for all ages, Blue Oyster Cult, Peter Lipton, and even a singing muppet.

Up first the D6G team reviews five games that just about anyone of any age can enjoy. Great for getting the kids in your life to the table. Russ, Craig, and Raef discuss Sorry Sliders, The Black Pirate, Fish Eat Fish, Pengoloo, and Jungle Treasure in detail.

Meanwhile Total Fan Girl has scored an interview with Eric Bloom, the lead singer of Blue Oyster Cult!! Turns out he's a gamer.

Finally, back by popular demand (or at least that's what Hollywood tells us) Peter Lipton returns with "Inside the Podcasting Studio" and asks Raef, Russ, and Craig the questions everyone wants to know. (er again, that's what Raef tells us)

All that and our usual 'not too horrible' humor, with features such as:

•The Hollywood Minute
•Rapid Fire
•What's in the News
•Achievements in gaming
•& More

Eric is pretty cool. Met him when they were doing a show during '96 at a night club in Corpus Christie texas. I was running sound at the night club and while hanging out after the show (most of which shouldnt be recounted here due to family friendly policy) Eric noted my 40K shirt and we ended up talking about the altered beast video game of all things. It was funny watching him do a riff and attempting a deathmetal take on the games catch phrase "Wibe fwom yo gwabe" (rise from your grave).

Surreal doesnt even begin to describe seeing Blue Oyster attempt thrash metal. Its akin to watching Steve Perry of Journey... rapping.

The screenplay of my morning:

Exterior: rain and grey skies, protagonist bikes to work under darkening skies.

Interior: Dimly lit office, single window faces on industrial lot and grey skies.

Voiceover: "Tuesday morning, and a full day of setting up online case support for the company lies ahead. New guy drank the last of the coffee. Ugh. It's gonna be rough. Wait a second, is that...? It can't be! A new episode of the D6G! Hours of work are gonna fly by!"

Interior: Sunlight breaks through the clouds, illuminating the office and the beaming protagonist:

Protagonist: (Turns to face camera, grinning) "Thanks, D6G!"

*edit* Did'ya ever notice this show - PRICELESS. I can see you there, trying to explain the different groups who use the noble foam and pvc longsword.

Peter Lipton once again was particularly excellent. Hilarious and kind of touching in parts.

I really enjoyed the Peter Lipton segment this time.

I enjoyed the show [as I always do] but for some reason the show lacked something this time. I don't know what. It just seemed that when it got to the end, I felt like I had not heard it all...

You mean like "content"?

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy this episode: Rapid fire, achievements, news, and Peter Lipton were all fun, (Even the Eric Bloom interview was a lot less painful than I thought it would be), but there was no real content. I listen to the d6g because the way they review games, when they're done I feel like I know everything about that game there is to know-- I fell like I have actually PLAYED the game. They have 2 "normal" ~1 hour segments where they usually tackle one game-- Yes, the games they reviewed in the first segment on this one aren't deep enough to devote an entire hour to each, so I don't mind getting the Readers Digest style reviews that I get from other podcasts, but paired with nearly an hour of Peter Lipton with them just talking more about themselves and podcasting (which they've already covered in another episode) they just never got the in-depth content about gaming that we listen for.

Some shows are definitly meatier than others. I hear ya that there may not have been enough meat this time around.

I did go as in depth on each of the kids games as I normally do with the bigger games, it's just there really isn't THAT much in those games.

And folks have been asking for kids games for awhile.

But perhaps pairing kids games WITH Lipton in the same show might have been a bad call, I can see how this episode was light on deep gamer content.

Thanks for the feedback!

But the great thing is...if you didn't care for this episode, there's another coming in less than 2 weeks!

I had to stop just as y'all were getting into the kids game segment, so I haven't listened to it as of yet...however, as the father of a 5 year old little girl who's got way to much of her daddy in her I am really looking forward to it.

Just like any form of episodic media, they're not all gonna be winners to everyone.

Thanks for the kind words about Unseen Lerker chaps. Glad you like it.

Also really looking forward to what you think of Horus Heresy. I think it's one of their best yet.

They did review five games; that has to be a new record. If you don't have kids I can see why you might be dissapointed, but I do and found it useful.
I think Peter Lipton should interview the guys over at 40k radio, TWIW, Game On; that might be interesting to see what comes out of that.

Really enjoyed the Games for Kids segment. I know that Haba games used to be more readily available in the US but IIRC their North America distribution closed a few years back. Out of the Box got their start with the super popular Apples to Apples but I don't know if they still distribute that or if it's been licensed off to one of the major publishers.

The Peter Lipton segment was great as well. I wasn't a huge fan when it first aired but this one was really well done and very enjoyable.

My one complaint is going to be this episode's Hollywood Minute. About a month ago I got a dog and hearing Raef compare Stoni (with an "i" so must be a dward stripper) to a real pet just turned me off and I skipped ahead (I got just past the similarities and differences). I mean we can all agree that a Facebook farm is not the same as a real farm right? There's really no comparison there.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also Craig, thought I should mention that furries don't just write stories with animorphic characters, they also like to dress up in various forms of animal outfits, ranging from simple cat ears to full animal suits.

But otherwise, I completely agree with your analysis. At our local gaming store we compete for space and there are numerous arguments over which is geekier, Miniature Games or Magic: The Gathering (Magic is waaaaay geekier, obviously ). The worst is when a friend of a friend tried to tell me that Fencing (the sport) is more nerdy than D&D. That really wasn't the wisest thing he could tell a group of people experienced in striking with actual blades.

Maybe some good news about Haba: I was in Myriad Games this past Tuesday (big Starcraft board game event) and Dan mentioned they would be carrying more Haba as regular stock in the near future. Perhaps they finally got another good American distributor?

I want to congratulate Total Fan Girl on landing an interview with Eric Bloom from Blue Oyster Cult. Awesome work there. I am also impressed (but a bit disappointed) that, in the entire interview, you did not make a single cowbell joke.

Eric Bloom is, of course, the ACTUAL guy who played the cowbell on "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," Will Ferrell's character "Gene Frenkel" in the SNL skit was completely fictional.

Great interview. <achievement sound>
Missed opportunity <negative achievement sound>

Thanks Tertius! The whole time I was talking to Eric I kept thinking, "He's just a gamer." but a voice in the back of my head kept screaming, "OMG Rock Star!" which was a little distracting You know, I debated bringing up the cowbell thing, which I know he's pretty cool about so I could have asked him, but I decided not to go there. Next time I interview a celebrity with a notorious SNL skit, I'll make sure I ask about it so my net achievements are positive.

I was actually happy that you did not bring up the cowbell thing.
It was a great interview without having to "go there" as you put it.
Nice work!

As for the lack of content comments. I guess I can see where people are coming from. As for me, I was happy with the episode.

I am in the process of looking at games for my nieces and nephews. This was a great help. It may not have been a Horus Heresy review (hint-hint) but I found them useful all the same.

Definitely not too horrible. Made it right to the end and quite enjoyed the "Kiss My Axe" track. Haven't listened to metal like that in many years (since my ears got old on me...!)

As I was listening to it, I had a little smirk to myself as I thought GW should learn to tread lightly with the IP hammer. After all, as Slaine first used the phrase in 2000AD comic many, many years before WAR was even a glint in the shareholders' eyes, they might be tempting karma...

The last few episodes have had parts that were tough to sit through. I've even fast-forwarded through some parts and I never, ever do that.
Maybe the next episode the guys will be back on their game.

Russ,

I have a question regarding the Black Pirate. I think my 5 year old and even my 10 year old would really enjoy this game. I have seen a couple places selling it online, but it has the German title. Does this have english instructions or would they even be needed?

Any help you can give would be great, I hope to purchase this very soon for my boys.

Thanks and great show as always!

Howdy mbowsher,

Yes the German titled box does come with a rulebook with rules in many languages, including English. My boxes of both "The Black Pirate" and "Jungle Treasure" have German titles.

So if you see a good deal... grab it!

However don't pay too much!! Dan @ Myriad just confirmed that Haba is going to become much more available in the very US soon.

Good show guys, as an uncle to several nephews & nieces I really enjoyed the kids' games segment. I felt the "inside the podcasting studio" might have outstayed its welcome a little bit too much though. The Eric Bloom interview was a pleasant surprise, as a Rock Band player myself it was refreshing to hear him be so open minded about the game introducing people to new music.

Russ I think perhaps you have mixed up the kids version of Carcassonne with Catan. I've gotten both games as gifts for young kids (5/6 yrs). The 'Kids of Catan' does have a 'merry-go-round' format which makes it very random, there's no decision making involved at all though it does have nice wooden playing pieces which younger kids can simply play with on their own. "Kids of Carcassonne" however is like a simplified version of the original game - it has larger colourful tiles & meeples and the game itself is only concerned with road building there are no farms/cities in this version.

For the record, I was listening to the podcast again and I googled aye aye.

That is one of the most evil and creepy critters I have ever seen. It is like some vile muppet that was rejected from the Dark Crystal.

Thanks for the feelings of lurking doom I am sure to feel when I walk my dog n the park later. Now I have to keep my head up on the lookout for aye aye attacks.

This should be called the "Raef Redemption Episode"
While Raef routinely drives me howling mad with rage for many reasons, Peter Lipton was excellent.
I love when Peter asks Raef questions. It was "Exquisite".
The story about his daughter was fantastic as well. As a gaming Dad with 2 little ones myself, I can completely relate with the challenges of gaming when you're an active, involved Dad.

Thanks for the Descent campaign updates in achievements. I am totally hooked on the basic game, and am looking forward to getting Road to Legend. Its great to hear how others are loving it.

Nice work guys- you're getting even better.
