From the newsletter:
Warhammer Historical is proud to announce that the long-awaited second edition of our hugely popular Warhammer Ancient Battles rulebook will be released soon. It will be available only direct from Warhammer Historical but copies will be available from the Warhammer Historical Stand at Salute 2010.
This lavish new edition is extensively illustrated with a plethora of diagrams, artwork and photographs of painted models, as you can see from these sample pagespreads http://warhammer-historical.com/Aspreads/WAB.html
This new edition also features a selection of new special rules covering the unique doctrines, cultures and weaponry of ancient times in order to add even greater depth and enjoyment to your games. Warhammer Ancient Battles Second Edition also features fully revised army lists for Romans and Barbarians, and a selection of sample army rosters from across the ancients periods, from the Egyptians of the New Kingdom to the Crusaders.
This full colour large format 216 page hardback book features a fully updated and extensively revised set of rules for playing the epic battles of the ancient world and will be priced at £32.
Some private thoughts:
The book is significant more expensive than its predecessor,
No mention is made of still able to use the old armylists
By the look of it the changed at charging and the chariot rules
Panting section unchanged
With the multiple rulesets brought last years by some of the original writers and the mechanics that they brought for that
this promises to more interesting than WFB 8.0.

2 years later; finally. Hardback? "It will be available only direct from Warhammer Historical"? They better have a US distributor.

- £32 or about $50 US is a bit more, but less than was feared when it became known that Forge World was running Warhammer Historical.
- JJ (of Alexander the Great fame) has confirmed on TMP and the WAB list that the rules are fully backward compatible. All special army book rules are now included in the main rule book.
- All indicators are that a number of figity rules from version 1 have been revised to improve playability.
- What about the pants?
Appears we have the makings of a WAB 2.0 vs WFB 8 showdown this summer. My money is on WAB

While I love WHH products, it sucks that their sales are now going direct only. It's hard enough to find players, this move will just make the rules less accessible to newbies...

Certainly interesting and I've only once heard of this system. Having perused the site, I see no miniatures. Are there none produced by GW for this?

GW makes no historical figures.
Sorting out which figs and from whom to buy is half the fun. There are dozens of historical manufactures - makes for a wealth of choices for style & price.

Their are dozens if not hundreds of companies that put out lines for any conflict you can think of and ones you can't . The WAB is good for tournies and a solid jump into historicals. With thousands of sets of rules most people just adapt them into their own home brewed which tend to work out best.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Very interesting. It looks like it might be a pretty good update. I wonder how it will compare with Field of Glory? It'll be interesting to see if one of the rulesets comes out on top or if the Ancient rulesets scene stays as mixed as it is currently.

Thanks for the info...I've certainly been interested in some other 'historical' troops but had no idea what I would do for them. I'll have to look at this more closely. LOL...doesn't this sort of fly in the face of all those people that say GW is just a mini's company?

You know, I never really thought about it....but yeah. Actually, it kind of does.
Of course, Warhamer Ancients has nowhere near the support of any of GWs main games...that's probably the heart of the issue. And since the historicals market has so much competition, it probably wouldn't be worth the effort for GW to try to develop and support a ton of new historical lines, when they have cash cows like Space Marines that they can focus on.

Warhammer Historical sells a range of rules -- Ancients, ECW, WW1 and Trafalgar. They are all based on the same core mechanism as WHFB/40K.
They are accessible to players in a way which many historical rules aren't. Not that historical rules are complicated but they are different.
GW also publish the Warmaster fantasy and historical rules. These are more similar to other ancients than WHFB/40K.

Just started looking into WAB about a week ago...the fact that a new ruleset is coming makes me glad I haven't tracked down the 1.5 rulebook yet.
Hopefully I can track down some local players to give my fledgling armies a work out.

Warlord Games, founded by John Stallard and John Sawyer, have been producing Historicals in plastic for a few years now and they're awesome. http://www.warlordgames.co.uk/

I saw it confirmed that a decision was made high up the GW food chain to only sell WAB direct through forgeworld/warhammer ancients.
So, unless something changes, it won't be carried in stores here in the US.
I'll try to dig up a source (and that is also what the announcement email implied).
