Hello again!

I have just a simple question:

When do supplementary codex(s?) become unofficial? I can see that in the case of the SM supplements, they become superceded; but what about the books like Craftworld Eldar / Armageddon?
Did GW release a statement, or do the new relevant codex(s) make this clear?

Thanks in advance!

GW rarely, if ever mentions anything to do regarding one supplement superseding another because to be honest, a gaming supplement is a supplement for a game. If you want to continue playing 3rd edition 40K with people, then these supplements will still work just fine.

This is exactly why tournaments tell you exactly which books you are allowed to use in their tournament.

But the hard truth is GW simply stops printing the codex and then doesn't put out any FAQs or any materials to update it when a new edition and new 'parent' codex rolls around and if you were to flip through any of those supplemental codices now you'd find a wealth of references that just don't make sense anymore.

So you can use them as source material to come up with your own house rules for the current edition but you aren't going to get very far trying to actually use them to play any kind of 'RAW' type of game.

Yakface speaks the truth.

Most people I have found use a list similar to this when deciding which is "legal".

I can only remember them releasing a statement once, when Daemonhunters came out and they actually put it into the FAQ that Codex: Assassins was no longer valid.

hmmm...

Thanks for the responses everyone. I asked because I recently dug up my old Craftworld codex and noticed some pretty cool builds which I think would be fun in fifth. Some of them are now fairly redundant (Iyanden for example); but some look worthwhile (Biel Tan, and Saim Hann); and some look like the're just waiting to be argued (Alaitoc pathfinder rules).

The CE dex doesn't appear on the dakka list of current rules, but then it also doesn't list it as unofficial (IE assassins). I will have to check out the restrictions for the next tournament-

Thanks again!

I think you'll be hard pressed to find a tournament that allows those rules...I certainly haven't heard of one allowing them since the last codex came out.

Again, there is no 'list' of 'unofficial' supplements as GW no longer lists anything as 'official' or 'unofficial' anymore. The closest you'll come is just going to the website and seeing what codices are still in publication for their game.

As I said before, you can always try to figure out ways to incorporate older supplements into the current game, but these aren't supplements that properly function with the current edition. They tend to have page and rule references that have changed or no longer exist. So you're just not going to find tournaments allowing these rules because they take too much effort to make compatible with the current edition of the game and they are publications that are no longer available to the general public, so if you show up at your gaming store with the craftworld codex, a player who just started playing 40K is going to have no idea what that book is and he has no ability (besides borrowing yours) to even see what the rules are. And of course if he stumbles across any rules that don't make sense in the current edition he's left scratching his head because there is no GW FAQ updating the codex to the current edition.

To be fair, very little of what used to be in Craftworld Eldar didn't get incorporated into the latest Eldar 'dex in any event.

Off the top of my head, the Alaitoc rules aren't there, but a ranger/pathfinder heavy build is viable anyway. Saim-Hann's alternate force org chart can't be used but jetbikes are now a troop choice (they were FA in the previous edition) - the only thing you can't do is take 6x vyper squadrons as your 'troops' (yes, I saw it done ) but who wants to take no scoring units anyway?

Iyanden can still get Wraithguard as a troop choice as long as they are squads of 10, you can still take seer councils for Ulthwe, all-aspect warrior armies can be run for Biel Tan.

Overall, Phil Kelly did a pretty good job of incorporating all the old craftworld builds into the new dex and bearing that in mind I wouldn't want to play the eldar dex with extra OOP craftworld rules on top.

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Have you thought about the Axis of Evil pension scheme?
