The Cheap Seats wrote:Ovechkin & The Kid: A scandalous snow shower?
Oh, you thought we meant that Kid? No, no, we mean an actual little kid (not a grown man whose name rhymes with the word). You may have heard by now that the Caps' Alex Ovechkin gave one Montreal-area tyke a good ol' fashioned snow shower before last night's game. The kid, part of a pregame salute to the hometown Habs, was holding a team flag at the side of an entrance to the ice that also happened to be next to the Washington bench.
On the surface, this looks like a total d*$k move. Spraying a kid? Really? Why not just lean over and tell him he'll never go anywhere in hockey while you're at it? BUT! While I think this clearly shows a bit more of Ovechkin's inner idiot we caught a glimpse of after Russia was ousted from the Olympics, don't shed too many tears for the little kid. As Sean at Puckdaddy said, this kid will spend the rest of the school year/his life bragging about his superstar snow shower. Plus, as Habs Inside/Out even says, the hard stop/bench sit is a constant part of Ovie's pregame routine.
We can see how Habs fans might be angry, though, but that's less about a snow shower and more to do with Ovechkin going on to score two goals in the 6-3 Washington win, putting the Caps up 3-1 in the series.
Let me just start out by saying: Really? I mean... REALLY? And they let him get away with that? What in the Feth is wrong with Alexander Ovechkin's brain? Is he just too plain stupid to realize the potentially dangerous (Not to mention criminal) consequences of a stunt like this? Or does he just not give a feth, and considers no one exempt from his grudges?
Well Dakka? What do you have to say about this sickening display of callousness? What do you think the NHL should do about this? Suspend? Fine? Both?

a) The kid's what... 5? 6? -maybe- 7? At what point in his life was he (Ovie) made to believe that this sort of behavior is acceptable?
b) What if a chunk of ice would've hit the kid's eye? Some of the shards in spray can be very sharp, and eye injuries are possible. At that close, you're being carelessly dangerous.
c) He was allowed to play that game. Who the hell is going to teach him this is wrong if no one in power is going to stand up and say "No!"? He's going to keep being a Piece of Gak unless someone puts him on a very short leash. At the least fine him!

Are any of you actually sports fans? If Andy Moog had done that to me when I was a kid while I was standing on the side of the rink it would have been the best day of my young life. Getting sprayed with cold water and ice isn't really a big deal to someone who has played a bit of hockey or even ice skated. You should see my kids sledding... they get worse than that kid did on every run.
Not a big deal, particularly in the context of the culture of Ice Hockey and really winter sports in general.

Exactly. All that the kid will talk about for the next year is brag about Alex Ovechkin snowed him. He wouldn't have been mad or anything. If I had been sprayed by Mats Sundin or Joe Sakic when I was his age I would have been ecstatic.
Monster, Much as I agree on that point - Hell I wouldn't even mind if Rypien punched me in the face - the matter here is that it wasn't acceptable behavior. Not for an adult, and especially not for a professional athlete. Not to a kid. Sure the kid's probably overjoyed about getting snowed. As far as he understands it, he has every right to be. But as for conduct, on Ovechkin's part, that's not what I would call acceptable were I a part of the Caps' coaching staff. You wanna give the kid something to brag about? Sign his jersey or a piece of his gear after the game, rather than spray his face on the opposition's ice, on national television, when you're already considered a sizeable D-bag. If Alex was going for brownie points, he had a pretty big fail moment.

I'm not a fan of ice hockey. As a rugby player and fan, I'm equating it to kicking mud at a mascot kid. That would get you severely censured.
If it's actually considered a 'lucky charm' type thing then I take it back, but the OP didn't suggest that it was, rather that it was very poor sportsmanship. If it was, then he should be heavily fined.
Its not anything like kicking mud at a mascot kid. I say this as someone who grew up playing hockey, and currently plays rugby. Being sprayed isn't necessarily malicious.
Its the playoffs, the kid was next to the bench entrance, and that was poor planning.

Anyone can get something signed by a hockey player. They get a jersey signed, hang it on the wall or put it in the closet and forget about it. Getting snowed by a superstar? That's the memory of a lifetime, my friend.
I'm not disagreeing with you when you say that it wasn't really the smartest thing in the world to do, but I don't think it was High Treason either.

I'm less worried about this than Ovie's tendency for cheap shots and taking runs at people while the NHL and officials turn their heads. The dude's a lunatic and is going to seriously injure someone someday. I'm just hoping he gets caught with his head down someday and gets his a la Kasparitis => Lindros.

Or Mitchell => Toews, Centre Ice
Now THAT was a brutal (But still legal) hit. Toews sat the rest of that game out too
But yea, he's far too loose a cannon for his own good, and it's going to get him back some day. Question is, when? Soon I hope, but considering what the Caps' Suits let him get away with, I'm not exactly crossing my fingers.

Speaking as someone who doesn't watch hockey, this seems like a pretty mild thing. Although I can understand how a player's reputation, him being on the away team IIRC, and the game's circumstances can affect others perspectives. The article also mentions that that kind of stuff is part of the player's routine.
And on a somewhat related note, I'm sure the Orlando Magic fans weren't too pleased to see the away team push "their" kid especially after Big Baby sank the game winning shot :

This one looks more like he was trying to keep from plowing over the kid and moving him out of the way to me....

The kid was standing under a spotlight, and Ovie had a good distance to the bench from warmup. I don't think he could've not seen the kid there.
Bugs me that Washington's PR crew just waved it off too. "Oh he does that all the time. It's part of his warmup." Oh, I guess that makes it okay. I guess that means he doesn't need to apologize then.
If the opposing team schedules a ceremony, in the playoffs, you go through your warm-up as normal and ignore the ceremony.
Its one thing to be irritated by Ovechkin's cheap shots, though he's far from the only offender in a league that's dominated by the intent to injure, but to really consider this a terrible thing? It sounds more like irritation at the fact that a favored team is badly outclassed in a playoff series.
Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.
He did a stupid again a couple nights ago too. Shoved a guy from behind and sent him headfirst into the boards. Busted his clavicle. They're still -deciding- if they should suspend Ovie at all.

Hrmm, hard to say. Don't really understand the etiquette of the sport myself, but it still seems a little jerky. But hey, if the kid isn't hurt, he's gonna have one hell of a story to tell his mates.
