I am just getting into fantasy from a 40k background, and I would love to hear some theories on when to do a full command, no champion, or just a musician. More specifically it is for a Skaven army (No ultra combat blocks). Here is the list I am working toward, but how would you tweak it in terms of unit commands? I ask because 20 points for a clanrat command is a lot of points that could be used elsewhere in a dirt cheap horde list!

My Skaven (2250)

Gray Seer w/ Dispel Scroll 265
Plague Priest w/ lvl 2, Plague Furnace, Warp Scroll 320
Warlock Engineer w/ lvl 1, Doom Rocket 95

25 Clanrats w/ Shields, Musician, Standard, Mortar 189.5 (Gray Seer here)
25 Clanrats w/ Shields, Full Command, Mortar 197.5
25 Clanrats w/ Shields, Full Command, Mortar 197.5
21 Slaves 42
20 Slaves 40
20 Slaves 40
15 Giant Rats w/ 2x Packmaster 61
15 Giant Rats w/ 2x Packmaster 61

27 Plague Monks w/ Standard, Storm Banner 249
6 PCB 96
6 PCB 96

Doomwheel 150
Doomwheel 150

Total: 2249.5

Q: How many of a specific demographic group are required to carry out a simple task?
A: An arbitrary number. One to carry out the task in question, and the remainder to act in a manner stereotypical of the group.

Well, command options can be an expensive inclusion for many armies, but 20 points for full isn't bad compared to what most armies pay. With skaven, there is a good chance a unit will need to rally, and since SCR is the main way they win, breaking ties is important. So music is really needed, and it has no downside. A banner gives a flat out +1 to res, without paying the full price for a rank, and getting past the max 3 rank bonus. The downside is it can be captured. Champions have multiple uses, protecting characters, and keeping opposing characters from killing too many models. So in big SCR, champions are pretty important TBH.

So with a full SCR block, paying 20 points for all those benefits just makes sense. Skaven blocks even with spears, full command, and an extra rank still are cheaper than most other armies SCR blocks.

I agree with notabot.

On Clanrats, always take Full Command.

On Slaves, Musicians can be helpful for rallying if you use them as bait units early on and flee from the charge since they only cause panic in other Slaves, but no need for any other Command. If they're just there as speed bumps, though, no need, keep them cheaper.

For the rest, it's personal preference. I prefer Full Command on units like Plague Monks and Stormvermin for the same reason as in Clanrats(protect other characters, Challenge Uber characters), but also because they ALWAYS get their attacks until the unit is wiped(sometimes useful against HEs and other such units).

Just remember folks. Panic. Panic all the time. It's the only way to survive, other than just being mindful, of course-but geez, that's so friggin' boring. - Aegis Grimm
