Just a quick question
yesterday i had a game against a good friend of mine, i used my orks 1250pts vs his new nids 1250pts and nothing would go right for my opponant he had lousy dice his units were out of position and my trukks were zooming round the table. basicaly his army was almost completely gone by the end of turn four and its only because i forgot to move a whole unit of orks into assault range that there was anything left at all.

I felt horrible, recently this particular opponant has mopped the floor with me every time, Am I the only one who sometimes feels bad for destroying someone elses army?

I find what goes around comes around usually.

I had a friend that was feeling a bit sick and tired and "threw together" an army of space marines to play.
It was the most evil list he had ever put together and with luck that would have made him a millionaire in Vegas.
He wiped the floor with me and made my winning 70% of the time army look like a bunch of rookies that forgot a war was going on.

If I am lucky enough to find myself on the winning end, suggestions of a dice burning party or to request the opponent to stand back because I expect a piano to land on him at any moment tend to help a little.

It is the poorly managed, selected, deployed and bad luck games that you are at a loss for words. I tend to start doing silly things I always wanted to do but it was "not smart" to keep the game fun.

Do not worry, luck will work against you soon enough, enjoy while you can.

In 4th ed I ran an all lascannon army IW naturally. It wasn't even good but my friend gave up at the end of my turn 1.. he hadn't even had a go. (I'd killed all his vehicles or took their weapons.) Afterwards as I went home on my motorbike and a car pulled out in front of me and I supermanned over the handle bars. Bed ridden for a few days crutches for a few weeks..

So I think karma got me back eh.

I have had similar experiences, last game my Tau tabled a BT army by turn 3.

I find that the same thing will happen to you but the other way round. Sometimes you win sometimes you loose, its just part of the game.

Once things start looking bad I usually start making the interesting decisions. Like charging his Hive Tyrant with my CCS. Unfortunately sometimes the dice gods really have abandoned them and Comander Kickasso kills the giant monster with his bare hands.

I also do this if it becomes apparent that I can't win. Like tank shocking my basilisk through his Deffkopta sqwardron. Or throwing everything I have left at Straken in close combat.

I never feel "bad" for winning. Sometimes I don't feel "good" (opponent had crap dice rolls) but that happens to everyone now & then so it's out of my control. The only times I win and come close to feeling "bad" is against newer / younger players who think that the Tau will be easy to beat (Just get into melee hurr) but have no idea how to do it right.
No matter how much I try & make mistakes I can't do it enough / bad enough to help level the playing field without it looking like I'm throwing the game. Usually in those cases I try to go over what the opponent did wrong after the game, which seems soften up any hard feelings.

I played a Warhammer game last night that I won because m opponent who was new accidentally reformed his thunderers infront of his Cannon, giving me the turn I needed to run up his flank without taking any cannon fire with my knight and proceed to charge his large unit of miners. I won by two guys, and he is murderously accurate with his cannon fire.

It happens. I used to play some pretty fluffy Iron warriors back in the day. Sometimes Id win, but mostly Id get my ass handed to me. But once I switched to Orks and played with a few builds I started to win more. Then I ended up beating the piss out of a guy that used to beat me pretty much everytime. It felt good, but I also felt a little bad for winning so badly.
But you have to get over it. It will happen eventually to everyone, and its a lesson that a constant winner has to learn from time to time

You have the good days and the bad days. Bad when your demolisher cannon scatters seven times, and only scatters onto something hostile once. Good when a flamer rolls six 4+ wounds out of seven (vs Orks), or a Bloodthirster fluffs all his attacks and/or wounds for three full turns, before finally knocking Lucius the Eternal over. Take them as they come, the Dice gods cannot be controlled.

It happens all the time: I once beat a guy in a 1000 pts game in 30 mins, with no casualties, yet next week I got massacred by a different person.

It's mostly luck that defines wherever you get a crushing victory/defeat.

Nyeah see, what he fails to mention is that actually the games have been getting closer and closer each time. He's been developing new tactics and methods of counter acting everything.

So basically, when he says he spanked me due to bad dice rolls, that's only part of it. (Not saying it was nothing to do with that. Damn Trygon was on strike and decided not to come out till turn five... right next to his tank boys. Poor little fella)

He controlled the board, he made sure of local superiority, and did what needed to be done to win.

I felt good for him. I felt less good for my poor nids...

Don't feel too bad for the person, but don't gloat either. These things happen.

In our campaign, I've been spanked twice with my current list (including my first ever tabling). However, with that same list, I came within 2 figures of tabling my next opponent.

Crap happens. Anyone can make poor decisions, you can have a string of bad luck, or your opponent can be a tactical genious. It doesn't neccessarily mean that you or your army sucks.

It seems like you both are taking it the right way. Your friend is able to shrug it off and you both can laugh about it. Those are marks of good sportsmanship. Congrats!

Well to shed a little light, the point limit was basically created from me looking at my new army and seeing that's how many points worth of nids I had. Redressed the balance now. So next game... *Shakes first*

Yea, I also feel bad when my opponent has bad luck.

That said, I think it's easy to blame luck in full, when really luck should be blamed in part. Poor list composition, poor deployment, and poor movement tend to make it so that an army will rise or fall by a few key die rolls. When the dice go wrong, they fold, and fold hard. If they had a different list, or played better, then they would have been able to adapt to the one bad roll and continue on.

Destroyed a Blood Angel player after wiping out 3/4ths of his army in assault on the 2nd turn after had had gotten most of the charges off, wiffed on his hits and wounds and proceeded to be torn limb from limb by vengeful berzerkers. After that he shook my hand and the game ended as he gambled all of his scoring units into a giant melee for a 3pt objective, only to lose them all.

It was just one failed ld check after another, losing all the survivors to no retreat wounds, his priests were dead and Dante ate a powerfist to the face. I had only lost 2 defilers by that point and a handful of rhinos.

I've had three such victories and all of them are really rather disapointing. Both players walk away from the table without much to feel good about even if they should.

Sisters Vs Chaos Space Marines:
Turn one - I fire my Exorcist at his Daemon Prince, six shots, five hits, five wounds, not enough saves=He Dead.
Turn two - Exorcist against Defiler - defiler explodes.
During these turns my Flying Nun was tear-arsing around and knocked out both his rhinos.
There was no chance for him to recover after two such turns.

Sisters Vs Space Marines:
I rolled bloody well for my Acts of Faith and to-wound rolls enabling me to shred his marines with AP1 bolter fire and brutalise them in close-combat with STR5 attacks.

Eldar Vs Grey Knights:
Most of my army performed fairly poorly but my Autarch was crazy-good. She arived from reserves on turn three and with her reaper launcher, and laser lance she killed an entire squad every turn - the only time I've ever tabled an opponant.

I believe the difference between a good and bad victory is the cause. If you have an easy win because the dice just love you (or hate the other guy) then it's not much fun - but if you have an equally easy win due to your superior tactics and cunning, I think both players can enjoy the game.

I know I've been beaten badly and still had fun just by virtue of witnising a tactical masterpiece unfold.

Having been present at the game in question, I can assure you it wasn't one bad roll. Or two. It was in the double digits. His reserve rolls failed until turn 5 and his assaults all came in way below statistical averages. It went from amusingly bad to frustratingly bad to just irritatingly bad as the game progressed.

Even though as previously stated the list composition was poor (the army made up of all 1,500 points of Mistlynx's new and previously-untested Tyranid army, so he had no choice in what exactly to deploy), the rolls were the killer.

Still, you get a game like that now and then. I threw my Eldar at those Nids yesterday and it came to a draw - both our dice rolls were far more average, so it really did come down to our tactics, which was great
