I was browsing through my ork codex, contemplating a big mek, when I read "A Big Mek allows one Deff Dread to be taken as a Troops choice"... this got me wondering if this would give me a Deff Dread capable of capturing objectives, or if it would have to be a Troops and infantry to capture objectives.

Imperial Fists- about 1,200pts.
Dwarves- >1,000pts.

Troops have to be infantry to capture an objective unless your codex says otherwise, and the ork's dex does not.

Yep. This.

Also, ork dreads are no different to Death Company dreads for BA.

Both may be taken as troops, but both are still vehicles - and as such are not scoring units.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Wrong...scoring units do not have to be "infantry"; they just cannot be vehicles or swarms. Troops that are Bikes, Jump Infantry, etc are all good - it is just Vehicles and Swarms that are specifically banned, as well as any unit which a codex states can never score.

Codex can override this, of course, but the Ork dex does not.

No, only troops can capture unless stated differently in the codex or mission.

Your Grandmaster is the only good leprechaun that remains, all the others turned to whiskey.

Exactly so. The Orks, for example, can manage to get bikers as troops and these would be scoring.

No commander, infantry are among the units that can capture as said by alerian.
If it was going by how you say, ravenwing could never win a game, nor could scars. (or jump BA in that matter)

Rules state pretty clear that only troops can capture, and then it adds onto that with vehicles and swams cannot capture objectives.

May be a few changes in dex's, but its down to the book.

I typed infantry instead of troops. I'll fix the typo.

Because the deff dread is a vehicle it can't capture objectives.
