I'm starting a new army right now the choices are Necrons, Orks, Tau, and Tyranids. Any suggestions on which way to go?

Depends on what you want to do. Competitive (tourneys) or just friendly games or a combo? What style of play best suits you? Up close and personal or ranged stand back and fire or a combo?

Pat that askala, O-H-I hate this stupid state

I only saw Orks out of that list. Well Tau are kinda good and have seen people win tournies with them but they have played for a number of years and are great tacticians. Necrons need a new codex and suck right now. Nids are ok but not great. Orks are competitive and have a great model line plus conversions are endless with them.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

@ Vepr
My strategy is beat it till it stops moving. I also do like to support my infantry with ranged attacks.

I'd probably go Tau then. Short ranged infantry firefights, with some of the best long range support available.

Short ranged firefights are a Space Marine's game. Trust me. Whenever I've gotten into 12" with the Tau they've lost. Crisis suits and stealth suits are good up close as long as they can jump away, but all other Tau units need their space.

OP, tell us what your preferences are game wise and we can help you. Aside from that, I'd say look and feel is the most important thing for a new army.

I'm going for a combo of friendly and competitive games.

Orks are probably my choice. They are very flexible and can pull off a number of strategies, gunline, CC, horde, bike rush etc. They are also fairly easy to paint as well. The only downside is assembling and painting 100+ models.

Take my advice of Tau with a grain of salt. I played in 4th when Fish of Fury was devastating, along with Hammerheads being nearly indestructible.

Orks are great actually, and can shoot remarkably well with their under-costed (IMO) Lootas.

If you're looking for something that will make you competitive, I'd avoid Tau and Necrons and definitely gravitate closer to Orks or 'Nids. They are newer and have less gibbled rules. This will make the lists inherently stronger.

I'd go with Orks in that case. Just as long as you don't mind a lot of models to build/paint. The army itself can be pretty well-balanced, though it's tipped towards assault (for good reason, as a blob of boyz charging into combat could be 4 attacks apiece times anywhere between 15-30 models or so, depending on how much they've been shot). On the other hand, while Orks have lousy BS, they do have sheer weight of fire to bring things down, and some of the most effective Ork armies I've played against have been shooty ones.

@OP: if you can't decide at all, pick the newest Codex (Nids).

I would usually suggest Nids or Tau because I like them more, but. I'd say orks. They're more than capable of dishing out a beating or two, and it's funny when they do.

i have been playing orks for almost a year now and id have to say that from what ive seen 100+ boyz and some stompy bitz on the field work particularly well, especailly when backed with some artillary and deep striked storm boys mob

Runnin up on ya.

Orks and 'nids = lots of model = lots of painting.

Tau = less units + less colors = less painting.

Depends on what you like. Orks and 'nids would be a more powerful option until a new Tau codex comes out and considering how each codex is more powerful than the last, it'll mean we'll have 10ft tall (actual size) flying super mechs that stomp people into little piles of goo *pause for breath* and tanks with armor 20 all around and and and and.... *passes out*

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

Orks maybe since they have lots of detail, but Nids? Lots of models, yes, but each is easy as pie to paint. The only army that can be fully dipped and be tabletop standard!

Back to the OP, Orks are by far the most flexible. Necrons will be updated soon (hopefully) and become more interesting, so I'd backburner that one until 2011 or whenever they get the new codex/models. Tau are limited (but effective) in their builds and Nids are still being sorted out. Some swear by them, some think they stink, I think they are relatively balanced, but sorta boring. My rokkit spam orks curb stomped some MC spam Nids this weekend, so I can't say I was impressed, but I'm sure there are better builds. Ranged anti-vehicle is a big issue for them.

Orks are da bestest. Necrons are boring and impossible to be competitive, Tau are wimpy and uncompetitive. Tyranids are okay, but are really fun to play against if they've got hordes of Gaunts. Go for Orks. They've got the best non-Imperial model support, and an endless array of conversion ideas, as Orks can loot anything.

Thank you for all the input I think I'm going to go Orks due to all the support they have gotten and looking over my buddies codex.
