Subject: Use of giant in a SW army. Suggestions?

As you may or may not know, norse myth is full of giants, both as enemies and friends/mates of the Asir and Vanir. And the SW codex mentions some giants (often being slayed by a great hero). So I was thinking I might want to add a giant to my SW army, but Im not sure if there is a good "count as".
Options:
1. A giant from WHFB, modified with some extra armour and a really big gun. Count as predator or vindicator. Problem is he wont be able to apply any HtH action. (also, tanks look good on the battlefield as they are)
2. Get a squad of Ogryns and convince my friends this is Allies; make up some fluff to convince me they are Jotun kin.
3. Giant from WHFB, modified. Rules as Deamon prince or Greater deamon (and convince my friends this is legit). Problem is I dont like this Idea.
4. Kit-bash Ogryns with Dreadnaught and run them as Dreads. (fantasy giants seem a bit big for dreads, or?)
5. Drop the whole project and stick to the wolfs and regular tanks:(
Other suggestions?
Thoughts?

You could always use them as a thunderwolf cavalry variant, though that might be tad expensive...

It is a cool idea.
Is there a large walker in Apocalypse that would be a suitable count as?
There are some large SM collecters' figures have seen on ebay that could be converted?

I could see a giant used as a land raider variant. with a few Space Wolves in either tac or TDA hanging on or sitting on its shoulders.
Maybe as a pred as well, depending on size? hurling boulders or molotov cocktails as its ammo?
The daemon prince idea is kind off way off the mark and doesn't really fit in with anything fenrisian.
Stick to looking at existing codex ortions and creating something to counts as, so long as its explainable and fairly obvious what they are there shouldn't be any problem convincing your opponents to allow them.

Ha, I thought since they already ride around on mosterwolves, why not go the whole way. Maybe not a Landraider version, but with proper cannons attached, it could be a Pred (also same cost in cash, pred/giant)

I like the dreadnought idea the best. IMO - it makes the most sense and is the most sensible to convert. I say do some kit-bashing (as you mentioned) with dreadnought/IG heavy weapons and the Ogre Kingdom's Buls or Ironguts boxed sets. I would choose these over Ogryns because they are plastic and should be easier to convert. Nothing is cooler than a Norse giant in high-tech armor blasting the crap out of your enemies on the battlefield. Is there?
The only problems I forsee is the size difference. I am not sure, but Ogres might be a bit too small to use as a dreadnought. I think you need a dread base and a lot of bulky guns to pull it off. I may be wrong on the size thing....I dunno.

This would be quite complicated, but if you convert a giant so he is crouching (size is sorted), you could give him some some of giant mortar, and use him to represent a whirlwind or something similar.
He would of course need a huge 'soup bowl' helmet with a big screamy head

Build up some rules for use in a one off game/scenario.
I can just imagine waking the giant after x amount of strength x weapons have been fired or something like that.
Then off he goes on the rampage. Make sure he doesn't start an icequake or even worse bust down your closest bastion when he gets the hump!

Hm, yes, some animosity rules would be in order, but I dont think I would bother with this project for a one time scenario (even if i like the concept of a giant-slayer scenario).
The risk, I realise now, would be that the whole thing could look more crude and Orkish than SW. Perhaps I should make it as an Looted tank for the Boys instead
Also the Dread-Ogre would size up quite well if you bulk up the shoulders and use Dread "arms".
Thanks for your piece of mind everybody. I think this can be done, even if its just as a funny thing. Hope to post some results later when I have tried out some stuff. Got an old Ogre-kingdom model I can start with...

Interesting Idea sounds cool. I would either have Ogryns as allies or Kit-bash the Ogryns or giant with Dreadnaught and use them as dreds. I don't think the giant is too big.

you could get one of the old metal giants. They are quite a bit smaller and not too much bigger than dreadnoughts.
It might be a bit harder to convert, but they come in quite a few pieces and should be horrible.

I would use it as an HQ choice, since you get 4 of them anyway. Something suitably bad ass would be the dreadnought character, or the guy on a wolf, or a no-name character on a wolf. Just put it on a dreadnought base. I am a fan of the warhammer plastic giant, I wouldn't worry about line of sight cause I am assuming this won't be for tournament play anyway. Plus it would look sweet.
Using it as a tank kind of defeats the point of having a kick ass giant on the field.

Actually, that is not a bad Idea. A Lord on Thunderwolf is a truly powerful character that could as well be represented by a Giant. But I kind of imagined him carrying a really large cannon Also, the tank choise is a more humble way for such an out of place piece of the army. Still, this is one of the better options IMHO.

Brainless Servitor

This is a pretty cool idea. If you want some inspiration, get your hands on the old inquisitor rule book (can't find a pic of it on the web). The color section in the middle has a picture of an oversized servitor converted from the old WFB giant. It has the dread AC, some wicked looking claws on the right hand, and uses one of the inq acroflagellant heads. Something like that with pelts, tails, and talismans = awsomeness!

Go crazy and have some fun; it is a game after all.
The codex mentions Ice Trolls and other nice monsters live on Fenris; something like that might be smaller (and cheaper) than going giant.

In the backround about fenris, it says that the planet has snow trolls. Get a giant/troll, greenstuff some fur, make a datasheet and use him in apoc. games. Then say the reason is that the sw are using snow trolls to break an enemy line.

I did not know about the snow trolls. must have slipped me by. I thought there were only wolfs and kraken on Fenris.
Anyway, I thougt of the Giant because:
1 They are such an important part of old norse myth.
2 The Giant model looks cool.
3 I often play against Blood Ravens and CSM, thus, a change of standard Marine stuff is wanted.
4, they can be made to look part of the army better than trolls, IMO

would attract a lot of fire perhaps, but that would draw it away from other units.

I think Line of Sight will be the biggest problem for playing any converted giant model in anything but friendly games - he's just too tall, even if you pose him crouched or on his knees. Crawling on his knees might match a vehicle height (and other dimensions) ok, but would look very odd
Hmm, howabout the giant represents some ethereal mythic warrior ancestor (insert mystical mumbo jumbo here) commemorated by some big scary holographic image (which has no game effect, think of it as a banner). Gameswise, there's a real warrior/robot/whatever inside the hologram, who counts as a dreadnought. Measure the actual height of a dread against a giant (I'm guessing somewhere around the waist), paint a clear marking on the giant at that height, and tell your opponent that everything above that mark is hologram and is 'invisible' for all LoS purposes.

Lol, nothing you cant fix with some fluff! But if line of sight is a problem, I can make the giant blind or with wery limited vision, so all his line of sight is counted from a servo skull attatched to his belt (or even on the base). This could also be a nice touch to the model, and a nudge to heroes blinding cyclopses.
