Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

What if the "Reserves" roll only indicated a unit's readiness to deploy, rather than force the unit to deploy? Basically, units in reserve would be rolled for as they are currently, but when they successfully "arrive," the controlling player may deploy them during that turn or any successive turn at their discretion. The units are "ready" and may arrive when needed, not simply when they are rolled for. I think this option would add some additional strategy to the reserves usage and deployment, and there are many times when, strategically, a unit would be better held in reserve and surgically inserted when needed in 1 or 2 turns rather than immediately. This may make reserves more powerful, but there is also the trade-off of withholding units from the board longer. Additionally, how the game is played would evolve as a result, but the result, IMO, would be a better game with more counter/counter-counter strategy and less pushing models across the board and trading shots.

Thoughts?

Yeh, but that'd have to be for an expansion...

The reserves idea is that you're not sure when they're coming in which apparently balances the fact that they get a free turn of shooting, or the chance if they have the ability to outflank and appear right next to you (Finishing off a tank with a meltagun and a close combat charge).

I've thought about this idea and put it too use before when my friends and I played a huge match across his whole house with a lot of turn system/movement rules in place.

Nah, its crazy OP.

The 'have to come on' bit is the only thing balancing the reseve rules.

Your idea would mean that a Mechdar player (or any other skimmer heavy force) could go second and pop onto the board with eveything on T5. 1/3 chance of auto-win, if not you've still had a full extra turn than the enemy, and they only get one chance to try and kill you.

It's really overpowered, and would create all kinds of last minute shenanigans.

It might be held in check by a requirement to declare reserve actions a turn in advance - at the end of your turn you announce which units (of those you've rolled to make available) will be coming onto the board and the start of your next turn. If they were flanking the direction of their flanking would also be discovered, giving your opponent a turn to react as they see them coming.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I'd enjoy it. Would mix it up a little.

Play against Mech Eldar with it. Won't be so enjoyable then.
