Power-Hungry Cultist of Tzeentch

Hi all,
I am thinking about changing my foot slogging Orks to Mech. The main reason I want to do this is simply to try out the different style in play. I have a decent bit-box that I have collected over the years which includes 2 Leman Russ Tanks and a Chimera.
My plan is to build 2 Trukks and a Battlewagon from these tanks (plus other bits I have lying around and a lot of plasticard). I would rather do that than buy the 3 brand new kits. Plus I really don't like the Ork Trukk model.
If I do this, will I be able to use my custom Trukks/Battlewagon in GW Tournaments? What are the rules in tournaments about conversions in general?
Thanks all.

There are none.
Seriously, general rules are lacking on this.
The usual rule is "they must be appropriate", so no 30" long Battle wagons. If you follow this I doubt you will get any complaints.
Unfortunately the only "real" answer here is: Ask the TO. If the TO says "no", then no amount of "but dakka said so" is likely to change their mind.

Thanks for the heads up. I will be going ahead with the conversions then.
Could anyone who has an Ork Trukk and Battlewagon do me a favour and post their dimensions for me. It would be a great help!
Cheers.

As Nos said, there are no rules.
You literally have to ask each TO what is and isn't ok for their Tounriment.
Their Event, their Rules. If they want to Ban Pink models, T'au or Rune Priests, they can.

A good rule of thumb for any conversion--vehicle or otherwise--is that as long as the footprint & dimensions are the same as the original model, you're probably golden.

Catpeeler has it. IME most TOs are very open to conversions. The closer you get to the dimensions of the original, the more receptive TOs and opponents tend to be. Attractiveness of the model is also a big selling point. People are even less happy with bad-looking substitutes.

BW is about 6" X 3" and about 3" high(I think GW deffrolla adds a little less 2" to the front, if its custom shorter is better in case someone tries to rules lawyer you)
Truck is about 5" X 3"and about 3" high (edit)
From what I have been told at Ard Boyz, as long you use GW products your conversions are fine.

since orks are known for salvaging and rebuilding anything that looks like it could be a vehicle, and some things that arent, i dont think youll have an issue. just as long as you make it clear what each conversion is, and make sure any weapons or upgrades are clearly represented. (ie guns, grabbin claws, wrecker balls, etc). other then that, id say go forth and "ork-ify"!!

I thought i read somewhere it simply has to fit within an inch of original models size, and be a GW or Forgeworld model. I actually made all my nob bikerz out of hotwheels motorcycles and nobz bodies, the motorcycles are only 1/4" longer then normal, and one of the TO's gave me gak about it, and I had to rewrite my whole list on the spot or not play in the tourney :(

I'm rebuilding a couple of looted rhinos into battlewagons right now. All you need to do is add an axle up front with two battlewagon or trukk tires and you should be right in the zone for dimensions.

I find you get little to no arguments if you set your .44 Magnum and a whiskey bottle onto the side table before beginning deployment. Make no reference to it or threats. It's just there for "peace of mind."
That being said, as long as your conversions are made from GW models and roughly to scale/footprint of the original, you should get no complaints. If I were you, though, I would make my BWs a little bit wider to increase the front facing and correct the largest flaw of the GW original. It's not "modeling to advantage" at all.

If you did, it would have been a specific tournament or club rule, rather than a standard rule of the game. The 40K rules don't address conversions at all.

I've seen a guy at my last tournament with battle wagons with pirate sails and pirate ork conversions. The judge had to be called over to that table so many times for LOS rulings due to the roughly 8 inch masts. Make it simple if you plan to convert for your mech units...

Bad on that TO, if you actually put effort into the conversion. I like seeing people play with awesome looking conversions, we have quite a few at my FLGS, and I'm trying to get more people into it.
