Hey all.
I've recently been thinking of starting to play Epic. I've always been interested in the scale of the games and how you can field whole Titan legions at a time. I would love to start it but I have a few questions to ask.
1: How easy are the rules to understand, maybe in comparison to 40K rules for example?
2: How popular is Epic as a whole?
3: This is a bit place-specific, but does anyone know any clubs that play Epic games within the Sussex area?
4: On Bell of Lost Souls quite a while ago, there was a post about these scratchbuilt Mars Warhounds which looked excellent. How easy would it be to make some of my own?
Thanks,
Valk

3 Days and no-one has anything to say? Oh well, I may just make an Epic scale version of my Reaver and Warhound, or something like that.

Decided to register just to answer .
1. The rules are easier to handle than 40k rules in my opinion. Mostly this is due to less special rules and exceptions. Though I haven't played 5th edition admittedly. I do seem to remember that shooting rules were changed to resemble the epic ones (according to some who have played both).
2. Less popular than I would hope . I would suggest getting your friends to join to make sure there is someone to play.
3. Dunno, I don't live there (this is UK, right). But I'm pretty sure you could find some players in Tactical Command forum.
4. They were made by CAD and matter printer. I think I've seen some made from plasticard that looked very good. I suppose it depends on how much fiddling you are willing to do.

1: How easy are the rules to understand, maybe in comparison to 40K rules for example? The rules are far easier than 40k (every Epic edition from 1st to 4th)
2: How popular is Epic as a whole? Not very popular mainly because its not supported by GW anymore, that said there is a growing Epic community using rules from the internet and figures from ebay type sites
3: This is a bit place-specific, but does anyone know any clubs that play Epic games within the Sussex area? Sorry i live 12000 miles away!
4: On Bell of Lost Souls quite a while ago, there was a post about these scratchbuilt Mars Warhounds which looked excellent. How easy would it be to make some of my own? You can pick up Epic scale Warhounds on Ebay for a good price and convert from there. If you're willing ti shop internationally, have a look at sites such as www.trademe.co.nz here in New Zealand, your pound is worth 2 of our dollars

Hi mate!
You saved me posting a new topic, thanks. I too am curious about the whole playstyle and enjoyment aspect of this system.
Any experienced vets wanna chip in and open our eyes to epic scaled battles of entire legions, as opposed to squad level skirmishes?

It depends what you are looking for.
Epic is a wargame. The main thing in Epic is having a plan and executing it. Good dice help.
40k is increasingly a miniatures game. The main thing is having the right list and throwing good dice. There are tactics, in a sort of general way.
Depends what you are looking for in a game really.

You can spend a small fortune to buy direct from GW.
Or you can buy from ebay for much much less.
'dems your choices.

They have Eldar, Marines, Orks, and Guard ranges fully available. Sadly chaos never got released properly but the plastics are available and you can cannibalise marines for the rest.
I acquired pretty much all mine from ebay. Plus a few bits from forgeworld. Tyranids are bit like gold dust though.

I don't know of any regular Epic players on the South Coast Valk.
Best bet is to drop over to Tactical Command Forum as the majority of the epic worldwide community are there.

There are both a number of clubs in the UK (a couple just in London) that play Epic a fair bit and 9 or 10 tournies a year.

I find Epic to be an amazing addition to 40k, myself.
Epic, I feel, seems to portray the armies in a far more 'fluffy' way than 40k itself. For instance, horde lists FEEL like horde lists. Hit and run lists like Eldar FEEL like hit and run lists. Just better overall representation.
Plus, as said before, you get to field things like 3-6 Superheavy tanks, and Titans without taking up a weekend of gaming time, and a basketball court. :-P

I loved epic. The rules were slick and sensible, and used abstraction well. Especially blast markers; I can't understand why they weren't carried across into other games, representing a unit losing fighting ability as a result of the volume of incoming fire.
Close-up firefights were easy to resolve, essentially representing a conflict the size of a game of 40k.
Long-range weapons acted to soften up the enemy as you closed; you could really imagine a basilisk doing its job as you bombarded an approaching ork force.
And there is still nothing in the GW repertoire to match either fielding or destroying the larger titans.

Epic was running strong while 40K was new. The good thing about Epic was that a game could be a regular 40K size or one up to apocalypse size with super heavies tanks and titans. There were pleny of plastic models but a lot of vehicles were metal.

Yup, my feeling exactly. In Epic, tactics actually matter. You have space and time to draw up a plan, execute it, correct for exigencies, and re-plan. In 40K, it's much more "line them up and knock them down." Basically, two main tactics: gunline, or mad rush into melee.
The Epic rules are simpler, but the games themselves are more complex and interesting.

1. Epic is super streamlined, like the others have said. that might not be your thing though. If your into your leman russes getting shaken or stunned, dont look at epic becuase its live or die in this game. Epic is more dynamic then 40k because there is always a consequence to each of your moves. Its a back and forth game, not an i-go-then-you-go game. so i move a unit and do its action, then you pick one of yours. so there really isnt "phases" like your used to in 40k. models can move fast, they can regroup, they can move and shoot with a penaly, you can go on OVERWATCH. you can sit still and get a bonus t your shooting.
2. go to tactical command and see if you have players in your area. i would find some heads who are interested in the game before you invest. like most SG games the player base is low, but this is usually becuase the games havent been demo'd or shown to the public as much. Hell, ive gotten flak for playing epic in GW stores before. what does that say?
I like epic more then 40k, which is odd becuase ive played 40k since 1994 and only recently picked up epic. 40k is just becoming more like a dice chucking exercise then anything else to me. You move, you shoot and you assault, but in epic you have to worry about counter attacks, aircraft, titans, retaining initiatives, failed activation checks, losing your supreme commander. All of these factors make for a more tactical nut less appreciated game. GW gave up on it long ago, when it stopped making them money. Now the game is run by the fans, and its better off.
If you want to play the game push for it.

Its a good thread. Epic is awesome and 40k has turned into crap along with GW HQ.
But http://www.tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/index.php is the place to go to get into Epic!
And just because GW hasn't made more model or armies doesn't mean people and companies haven't picked up the slack. http://www.exoduswars.com/ is a prime example of keeping Epic alive. If you look at the Epic 6mm Sub forums on the Taccoms you'll find full Necron, Tau, Dark Eldar and many more full armies. Even "New" Players manged to get OOP or never made armies pretty easily. Lists are been made and developed and balanced. Epic is alive!

Back in the days of yor...
We had a local club that mostly played ww2 and modern micro armor. It was a blast we had a lot of fun on huge tables.
Then the Soviets folded and then we didn't really have the emotional impetus to keep going as such.
But we had developed all these tactical and operational skills on the table top.
Then we discovered Epic 40k. It was all that we had been doing but in a sci fi setting and we set about renewing the fun with new figs!
Good time were here once again!
I miss my epic guard army, sold it off long ago.
But I did just find my Epic Blood Angles stuff so all is not lost!
