I'm making a drop pod for either a venerable Dreadnought or my Black Templar command squad. I thought I'd do something different and paint it gold, which I'm very pleased at how smooth it came out. But now what? Wash it with Badab Black wash? Reaper Black Ink? Paint part of the fins black/white/other?

I'm hesitant at this point, since it's better than I thought it would be. Any pointers or ideas would be appreciated.

Probably go with the wash, then pick some parts out in white or black, like the Black Templars heraldry.

GOT DAMN! that is one bright drop pod. Go for the 3rd option: paint part of fins black/white/other. I think It would look really good. Also, it looks really cool but all that gold crashing down on the table would blind me with awesome. I suggest weathering it a bit to show the descent it made, but that's just me. But looks good so far.

Going to take a stab at it and guess that it's probably a Krylon or Dupli-color gold.

Wouldn' know the exact shade since Duplicolor has like 2-3 gold shades in their line.

I'd say airbrushed gold but that'd be a wild guess.

White would look good in the middle of the fins (the little section just above the exhaust (it's been kind of blocked out already); I'd do the part of the ramps that get walked on in black.

Then I'd wash it. Gryphon Sepia would be a good wash. Not as dark as say chestnut or brown ink but would still shade really well.

The Spray is Champion Sprayon 24 Kt. Gold Metalic Spray Enamel. I've had this can for a long time. The date on the sticker says January 2002. I picked it up for $3.88 at Hobby Lobby, I think.

I would get a Delvan Mud wash-

Delvan mud over a wash of burnished gold, (which looked near as bright as your pod), has a wonderful warm bronze color to it. My recent attempt:

I rly like it just being gold my self. Maybe a wash or two to show the recesses but I think it looks just fine gold. Dam the templars, make somthing golden shiney to go inside it tooo. Would look sweet.

You said enamel? I don't know how well the wash will work on that. I know paint doesn't like to stick to enamel at all.

If you want to put wash on it OP , put it only in the crevices.

There is simply no point of ruining such a beautiful god and turn it into smudged bronze mess if its all over it.

Agree with Luna there.

But are you sure you are going to paint it? I looks like some kind of award, actually.

Anything that shiny needs some re-entry weathering unless you want to blind your opponent

This is going to snowball into DA SHOINY THREAD!

I did a similar thing for some of my ork vehicles, but I did chrome. One is a looted wagon/boomgun, taken before I washed it, and the other is my BW taken AFTER I washed it. Im going to say that you should at least wash it, the difference is huge and youll see from my pics. Nice pod BTW

Your right, paint is a bit finicky putting on there. I had some fun figuring out how to get paint to stay on mine, but oddly enough washes stick to it somethin fierce

Agreed.

Put it on a trophy and give it away as a prize at a tournament....

You will probably need dull coat or matte spray if you want to paint anything further. This will affect the gloss of the gold of course, but after you paint other elements/details/iconography you can gloss coat it again. Who is coming down in that thing anyway, Inquisitor Bling Bling?

If more of us valued food and cheer and 40K over hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

Blimey C3PO's upgraded his ride!

Seriously though it does look good, definitely go with some white and black. Maybe do the Templar cross the same as sword brethren Red cross on a black field, That way it should stand out more from the gold.

If you want to do weathering oils should work well over that sort of paint.
