so i just got done with painting a space marine with highlights inks etc. i did it exactly by the book but my issue is i set it next to one of my models that i had done without anything fancy and its hard to say which one i like more, from a distance its the new one but up close my old one is much cleaner. needless to say this is discouraging so what i was wondering is. 1. should i go back to just doing basic painting and 2. if i stay with the highlights and inks wil it look better in the future?

cause im lazy

Well, I would say that yes your fine details will get better as you go along.

I'm trying to think of an analogy here...

ok here goes... A young kid sees a clown riding a unicycle and thinks 'hey i want to do that!' so he goes to the store to buy a unicycle and the store owner says 'Woh there tiger. first you need to learn to ride a bike'.

So the kid buys a bike and learns to ride it. its hard and he falls off but eventually he can ride it.

Thats you painting without any fancy details.

Now the kid goes to the store and buys that unicycle, he starts and falls off, then again, and again.

He gets discouraged. He can ride a bike perfectly after all but by persevering he gradually gets better and is able to ride the unicycle.

Yes your first attempt at detailing may not look great, but stick at it and you will improve.
