Ok, Obama has made it perfectly clear that he doesn't love us anymore. This is unlikely to change when Dave gets into power tomorrow (Obama was quoted as saying Cameron was a "light weight") so who shall we have a new special relationship with?

China makes the most tactical sense, they have to most guns. I also like their ridiculously aggressive 'feth you' attitude!

Plus they have good food. Just have to make sure that America does not start funding and equiping Mongolian "Freedom Fighters" to try and break up our budding relationship.

Although I don't know why we can't have a "special relationship" with a couple of countries. A cultural exchange with Australia would be pretty cool (we give them some culture and they give us some sunshine ).

I think that Uruguay option is showing a lot of promise, but I'd have to agree with China.

Love the history, some of the culture, food is great, with a good bit of British common sense we could get em to drop that communism malarky and bosh, new best buddies for ever club.

They might not have forgotten our decision to trash the Summer Palace after the 2nd Opium War in retaliation for torturing British prisoners.

You should know we British have a natural polite reservedness

Give it time. Obama is fairly Anglophobic, but most of his populace aren't, excluding some Irish American hardliners most spetics think well enough of us.

However the real issue is Obama's complete contempt for Gordon Brown, which is rather forgivable really. Once Brown is gone things will probably look up.

However in a few years time Obama will go to, he is not likely to be a two term president. So waiting before trying to fix up something as long term as a special relationship is not wise. Besides Obama is getting a lot of flak in the Senate for his diplomatic gaffs and he may well be forced to take a better attitude to Cameron, assuming Cameron gets in that is. Many in Washington are getting worried about Obama pissing on old friends, with good reason.

Meanwhile the UK should look to old ground, keep up historic relations with Portugal, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Despite the appalling leadership of Blair and Brown the UK has a lot of solid friendships going back a long way.

There are some lessons not to forget and mistakes never to make, but to be remembered quietly under our hats: India and China are not our friends.

We've had a formal alliance since 1386 (the oldest international alliance in the world by a very long way).

Plus they do good food and we share a feeling of superiority towards the french and spanish
