You could go with a simple disc shaped base with a small round trigger on the top (cartoon style)
If thats too basic then add a few details, like pressure wires poking out of the top (3 short wires)

Orks, SM, or 'crons?

Orks= ping pong balls cut in half with spikes made out of cocktail sticks.
SM= just craters. They'd have buried them properly.
'crons= BFG spaceships for cool floating mines, or scarabs partially buried. Or just craters again.

Yeah, like CadianXV said, just take a polystryrene ball and insert cocktail sticks into it. Voila! Instant cartoony mine!!

Take a look at ork tankbusta bombs. If you have the bits, those would work in a pinch, as would layered plasticard disks of progressively smaller radii, if you want a more regular, Imperial feel to them. Glue them down to your base piece, half-bury them in spackle or sand/glue, and paint/flock it up. Could also use fine wire/fishing line and toothpicks to make tripwires. I imagine each army's mines with a slightly different flavor, so more info would be helpful if you want more characterful suggestions.

Back when minefields were used (3rd ed), I used some small (12mm) buttons (round flat and hexagonal prism) scattered on the bases to represent a minefield.

The round ones were anti-personnel, the hex ones were anti-vehicle. I had an anti-vehicle surrounded by anti-personnel ones.

The shield emitters from tau shield drones also made nice mines (as did the battlesuit disc emitter).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Hmmm. I have kind of an oddball idea that I would try to do but I'm too busy so... here it goes.

Maybe have something around the size of a 40mm base. Like someone said above, put some satchels and stuff in a little cluster, and then place a rocket (like the single one from the SM special weapons sprue) with them to emphasize their explosiveness. Place something along the lines of a small radar dish a ways off, then connect the rocket to the dish with some discreetly placed wire.

For extra fun, get a rather large base and do this many many many times, all of them attached to a single dish. Maybe even place a small Mechanicus icon next to it, to ensure that it works correctly. This way you have a proximity-detonated minefield, all made from improvised explosive devices.

I dunno. Just a crazy idea I had.

And of course, make sure that all the components are somewhat hidden.

The most realistic would probably be IG tank wheels half buried

Sorry, I realize now I wasn't at all clear enough. I mean antipersonnel landmines, no specific army, so no orky bitz- imagine some generic IG mines, kinda. Not IED's, per se.

I saw the FW ones, and they are very, very nice. Too expensive, though (but who can't add that to any FW description, /snicker).

I'm using this plaster mix stuff which dries to a rocky finish, so yeah, would be half submerging them.

I was thinking things around the house. Buttons are interesting.

I like the idea of bouncing betties done for a mine field. Dont know what laying around the house would look like three little prongs sticking out of the ground but just giving you ideas of what some could look like.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!
