Subject: EDR ( event data recorder ) systems in your car, voluntary in the US and maybe mandatory in the EU?

Do such devices as EDR pose a yet unknown threat?
Read an article about electronics in cars. Mentioned EDR as a "black box", used to provide data collected with the cars own electronics. There seems to be a specification of those EDR by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US.
So were looking at the first stages of black boxes in cars?
Unfortunatly, the EU seems fond of the idea of mandatory EDR's in new cars.
Pro's:
- recorded data for accidents
- recorded data to base the value of a vehicle on when sold
con's:
- recorded data of any misdeed against national laws
- recorded data to be used in leasing contracts, car insurance,guarantee,...
- recorded data to be used in movement profiles
- recorded data to install a general toll system nation/continent wide
How does the recording of data and its provision to your government affect you?

It's all down to how the information is used. If it is used solely for helping to reduce accidents or ascertain the value of a car then they are a good thing.
Sadly, i wouldn't trust any company or government to use the data responsibly; they'd either sell it on to the highest bidder or use it to make more money from the populace.

@1hadhq I hadn't even heard of this until you posted this.
I wouldn't mind if just recorded 15 or 30mins data at at a time so there would be info leading upto during and after an accident or incident.

Volkswagen did reconstruct an accident with an VW Phaeton for the Austrian police ( accident of Jörg Haider, politician ),
without a EDR just the collected data of the electronics.

I have to say using data to reduce crime would seem to be a good thing as long as the crimes prosecuted are just.
There is the chance of a loss of privacy, OTOH data from an EDR and mobile phonesm etc could also be used to provide an alibi.

This is in no way a good thing.. like all technology governments (and regular people) fail to truly understand it.. And the hackers/criminals/corporations find another way to invade everyones privacy.
For example, your gps in your car.. Naturally has your home address on it. So when your at the shops I smash window, steal gps and can now safely rob your home because your at the shops. Without the gps this is impossible and would take heaps of effort.
Go go stupid invasive technology.

A smart car was involved in a fatal accident. We (the company I worked for) took it down to the county police HQ. Where it was accessed by mercedes.
They were able to determine the speed, what gear it was in. And if it was accelerating or braking ETC.
All this was determined via engine revs, inlet manifold vacuum electronic gear selection

I think these would be a good idea, but so long as they only record, say, 15 mins of data (and even that is pushing it, hell, 5 is pushing it but 15 seems reasonable).

Whatever. If its not such an issue why would some of the people who got their gps' stolen at a mall I used to work at rush home out of fear of just that?

@Mortified Penguin + Shaman:
ok.....collecting data has exactly to do with your posts how?
Did assume one already chose to volunteer for a "black box" in the US ( maybe discount at car insurance? ), so no?
Personally dislike the idea, cause data + government without money = new source of income.

Uh, not really. It isn't hard to watch a house. Certainly no harder than hacking a GPS database.

Maybe they are scared? Doesn't mean it's real.
Easy fix, don't program your home in the TomTom, program the local police station instead.

Are you bothered by cell phones? Because its relatively easy to locate those, and they are better indicators of personal behavior than cars.

Ok, not going unnoticed is an issue?
Isn't the probability of a outsourced data storage ( and the possibility of access of several interested parties ) a greater threat?
Example:
- your car may record your behaviour.
- it may record when you passed a speed limit.
- the EDR may now:
a) inform the police if you violated it, or
b) the electronis automatically slow you down but your attempt to violate is recorded
so the EDR could get you in trouble, either with the official traffic control or in a worst case scenario with your insurance ( tends to drive too fast ).
Electronics may assist you ( brake when too fast ) or assist someone else ( don't hinder you but inform others ).
A lot of data is already collected and a EDR could go both ways, helping you in an accident or quality issues of your vehicle, or just
benefit those your having a contract with.
