First of all, would it be legal, second of all, is it worth dropping the combat drugs to take a shadow field?

You can't take a shadow field without dropping the drugs, however, I'd take an Animus Vitae instead of the Mask of the Damned.
With a punisher and combat drugs you can boost your Archon to have a nice STR 6, WS8.

Thanks guys. But is it worth dropping the drugs for the shadow field? I mean a 5+ save is very rubbish. My opponent reckons being on a jet bike raises it to 4+ but I'm pretty sure this isn't the case, although it makes sense...

Your armor save, as per the codex, is indeed 4+ on the bike. (I'd take the Shadowfield, though, 4+ for an IC who is toughness 3 for the purposes of instant death is not a good idea)
I probably would be leery of dropping the Drugs, as the Drugs are what help make a Lord so deadly - I'd probably drop the Mask and keep the Drugs while also getting a Shadowfield.

Nah, it's only 1 model being discussed, hardly an army. And discussing one models wargear certainly affects the tactics you use with said model.

It's not an army list by any stretch and is discussing the tactics of how to equip an Archon. I think it's in the correct forum. Automatically Appended Next Post: Bah, ninja are everywhere.

I question this. While RJB squads do, in fact, have a 4+ save, there is nothing in the wargear entry for the RJB that indicates it confers an improved armor save. That is also not indicated in the Errata for the RJB wargear entry on GW's web site.
Page 14, Reaver Jetbike. The entire entry should
be replaced with the following:
‘A Dark Eldar character on a Reaver Jetbike
changes its unit type from Infantry to Jetbike,
with all of the benefits of an Eldar Jetbike
described in the rulebook. The model gains +1
Toughness as normal, but also +1 Strength due
to the combat blades fixed to the bike. The bike
comes with an in-built splinter rifle, which does
not count towards the character’s weapons
allowance. Characters mounted on Jetbikes
cannot be given Webway Portals or Crucible of
Malediction.’
(Now, I don't have the main rule book here, so it might be possible that the main rule book states that "Eldar Jetbikes" grant an improvement to the rider's armor save, but there is no explicit instruction in the DE codex that I own that gives the rider of an RJB such an improved save.)

Is that spelled out in the main rulebook or in the Eldar codex? The FAQ Errata states that the RJB gets the benefits "described in the rulebook."
Lots of people have assumed for a long time that the RJB gave a 4+ armor save since the unit entry for the RJB Squad has a 4+ save. However, there are several holes in that assumption that I haven't seen adequately addressed. The 5th ed. Errata might have addressed that, but I'm just looking for clarification.
So, if the RJB should actually be granting a 3+ save, that would be interesting.

Hmmm, that's interesting.
Back in 3rd edition when the DE first showed up, per the rulebook 'Bikes granted the same armor save as the troops riding them' which was always the argument for the 4+.
Saldiven has a good point that this rule isn't actually around anymore.
I'm not sure about the 3+ thought, though, as the errata definitely says you're getting the effects in the 'rulebook' which is generally used to refer to the core rulebook, not a codex.
I'm going to put on my asbestos suit and see what YMDC has to say on this as it's an interesting question.

the problem is it references another codex and that codex says they get a 3+ armor save.
guardians only have a 5+ normally so they get a -2 down to 3+, just by riding the bike.

Does Codex: Eldar specifically state that having an Eldar Jetbike grants the rider a 3+ save, or is that merely an assumption that since Guardian Jetbikes have a 3+ save, then any rider should also have one?

Yes, its legal.
You only have 80 points of wargear - you still have 20 points to spend. You have to remember that weapons do not count as wargear so the punisher does not count towards the wargear limit.
I would make an Biker Archon like this:
Punisher
T-Helm
Combat drugs
Shadowfield
Reaver Jetbike
Plasma Grenades
& Trophy Rack
that's 97 points of wargear + 20 points of weapons
