My brother is thinking about doing this. . . how well does this work?
he wanted to have Farsight w/5 bodyguards and 10 shield drones. . . not sure about weapon systems, should I discourage him?

Personaly I would advise against it.
I think its a bit of a gimmic idea. It will work at first then people will realise how dangerous it is and make it a priority target.
Using 10 shield drones will make it hard to kill but will be a huge reduction in the damage it can cause.

It will be a very expensive unit which will wrech most units it fires at but it will lack flexibility. It can only fire at one unit a turn whereas multiple units of 3 can spread their fire. As it's only one unit chances are it will be out manouvered which isn't a good position for Tau.

Secondly finding cover for such a large unit isn't going to be easy. If left in the open it will die regardless of how many drones there are.

I'd say farsight is fun for games of about 3k but other than that stick to a 'normal' tau suit-heavy list if that's mhow you want to play it.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

this one guy runs a 7 strong farsight bomb squad(8 counting farsight)

each suit has a Hardwired drone controller, 2 shield drones, a Shield generator and 2 flamers.

he will come close, Flame you to death, and if you survive he assaults you.

yes it is counter intuitive, but he regularly drops 30 strong boy mobs in a single round from the suits and Farsights power weapons will mop up in assault.

He currently has yet to have a worse game outcome then a draw.

I played a farsight deathstar unit for awhile. I'd say to go all out and take farsight with his full retinue of eight bodyguards. If you have the suits why not go for it? I think I had close to half the points of my army invested into that unit.

I've been meaning to build a farsight bomb with mostly TL flamers and missile pods and target locks. Deep strike him onto a bunch of orcs would be funny. Hey may live or he may die but it would be fun to see the look on my opponents face.

Isn't even a full squad of orks not much more than 200 points? (with all the necessary upgrades, of course). And the look on YOUR face is likely to be much worse when your 800-1000 point unit mishaps because the opponent knows how to deal with a deepstriking enemy. Sure, you can reroll scatter with the pathfinder devilfish, but honestly, how are you going to consistently fit 22 models (8 with medium sized bases) into a spot that is right in front of the enemy in order to use your flamers?

I like the idea of farsight bombs too, but I think a 3weapon approach (though expensive ah hell point-wise) would do well (missle, plasma, fusion).

Theoretically, couldn't you also put your other commander (shas'el) with shield drones and stick him in the unit as he is an IC? Bam, now you have 9 suits and 16 shield drones.

MY brother wanted to do the farsight bomb as a unit that starts on the board, or moves in off reserve and just marches up the board being scary as sh** to anything in their way. . . hence his want of 10 shield drones

He also just decided that plasmas are a bad idea for suits, he wants to give farsight's bodyguard unit meltas and missile pods. . .

I think he'd have some trouble playing with Farsight, but I'd go for it just for the model and the sake of having that unit. Never know when he'll be useful in an Apoc game

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Duplicate threads are rampant today!

I'll post what I just posted in the OTHER Farsight thread right next to this one:
-----------------
Not to mention having target locks, so you can pop multiple land raiders, multiple TEQ squads...multiple vehicles in a single shooting turn from one unit.

I think the best performance I've ever given was against orks (ironically).

I deep-struck the unit (I think it had 12 drones that were a combination of shield and markerlight) right in front of the advancing ork army.

In one shooting phase:

1. Pathfinders lit up a battlewagon with 5 meganobs and a KFF in it, Railgun exploded it.

2. Farsight's unit declared nobs inside to be primary target; and target locked the battlewagon next door.

4. Farsight and friends drop three network markerlight hits onto the nobs from drones; two hit. Three firewarrior squads reach out and place two more between them from the handheld markerlights.

5. Farsight's unit declares -2 to meganob cover save and +2 to its BS.

3. Angling gives side armor to a fusion blaster, which explodes a second battlewagon, killing 5/20 orks inside.

4. The rest of the suits (including farsight) drop fusion and rapid fire plasma into 5 meganobs and KFF needing 2+ to hit, 2+ to wound, and three of the shots being instant death. He loses the whole unit.

5. For my assault move, I jumped into the crater of his battlewagon with several models to force an assault into terrain.

*sigh* Ah, the fun times.

@Dash

I liked your recount of a successful Farsight bomb attack until I read the part about the assault move. You cannot get the assault jump jet move the turn you deepstrike with XV8's.

On that note, I'm running a Farsight bomb variation for Ard Boyz. The key is the target locks. I know it's a bit of a gimmick, but I think it's cool when it works.

I learned alot about how to play my tau army from reading Dash's posts back in the day.

The example he gave here shows just how deadly a tau army working in unison and supporting each other with markerlight hits can be.

I sold off my tau but still think fondly upon the fun games and the looks I'd get from people expecting to table me for playing tau.

Tau are a very underestimated army IMO. Have fun experimenting with farsight!

Although it can be quite expensive, there is nothing quite like fielding 20 crisis suits. its rather easy to do in a 2k point game, and still leaving space for a good number of fire warriors. This does lead to an eggs in one basket army, but those eggs can hatch into a great many things. Most people tend to go all crazy when you manage to deep strike everything on the same turn. Oh, and in case you werent planning on it, you must have pathfinder team's devilfish intact for this to work right. having your 800-1500 point megabomb deep strike into that lone guardsman then explode is a bad thing.

**almost forgot, have your friend/brother paint him in the correct colors, otherwise O'shovah become oh-shoveit, and dies whorribly
