Hello all! I am fairly new to my Necron army and have had some success. But when it comes to Orks I have been unable to put together a winner. From 750 points to 2000 points, Orks just get me into close combat to quickly and I end up getting my ass handed to me. He will always use Ghazghkull Thraka and a retinue of Mega Armour Nobz in a the War Trukkas well as a squad of Storm Boyz. I have seen that by taking the largest number of Necron Warriors has given me the best results thus far...My best results have been absolute failure. I typically Phase -Out by the fourth round. Any Ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

So what sort of tactics have you been employing?

The best results have been when I have kept my Warriors back and sent my Destroyers after his Lootaz and Heavy Destroyers after the War Trukk with ghazghkull thraka.

Screen with the Monoliths and use Scarab Swarms to swamp Ork units and keep them from your warriors. If possible, grab some wraiths and use them to assault the Orks as they have some of the highest Initiative in a Necron army and ergo a good fit to counter charge or mess up an Ork unit before they get to attack. Another decent unit would be flayed ones, but IMO, the better choice would be the wraiths.

To be honest, your up against an uphill battle, as orks are an assault army most of the time. Keeping those Warriors away is key, so use the Monolith to keep those fragile units away.

Eh, if Ghazkull and Mega Armoured Nobz are your problem I would go for big money and take the Nightbringer. Certainly he costs a lot of money but if he stays close to the main body of the army he will be hard to avoid. He completely nullifies Ghazghkull's armour and invulnerable save (2+ when Waaaaggghhhing hard to get by) and he can make short work of the unit after Ghazghkull is dead. With 5 wounds and a 4+ ward save he can survive. It might not be a guaranteed win for you, but if you add a wraith or two into the mix it should make things messy for the Ork boyz. Ideally shooting them up before they get into combat is always a bonus too. Some Heavy Destroyers taking out whichever transport and then firing into them before committing forces works. As mentioned you can also go the scarab swarm route. They can counter the Ork charge and allow for more isolation of units.

He is concentrating on putting all of his thoughts into the toilet.

Against Ghaz and his retinue, using the Deciever is probably best as it screws around with units via leadership tests. Since Meganobs don't have great saves, using that one HQ option could effectively keep that unit occupied most of the game. Unfortunately, since Necrons lack ranged AP 2 firepower to down the Meganobs at range, getting these guys out of their transport should be your ideal goal as their foot-slogging capabilities are 2d6 per turn and ergo not very good at all.

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

A monolith or two to template his Stormboyz (and Lootas if he decides to field them).

A Deceiver to keep Ghazghkull away from your Monoliths.

The same deceiver to eat Ghazghkull up and spit him out.

To add a bit more to Dash's advice, the Monoliths will be the bastion of your army. Lootas cannot penetrate the armored sides of a Monolith, and unless they field an insane amount of rokkits, the only other common way is via pokerklaw delivery systems. Used in conjunction with the Deceiver, that should keep most of his Ork army at bay.

Thanks ervybody! There are a lot of good ideas here. I am playing him this weekend in a 1500 or 2000 point game, I'll post a battle report to let you know how it turned out.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

the flux arc on a monolith can take out boyz by the bucket load without having to worryto much about PKs.

other then that, avoid CC like the plague.

stay back.

use the monolith to warp warriors out of CC to save them.

Wraiths arn't good against enemies who have a ton of attacks. they are good against small units of power weapon armed CC specilists as they have a 3++ save.

a 3++ save does nothing against 60+ attacks. you will die.

Destroyers are good for scooting around the flanks to shoot orks up from the side and then zooming off when the orks try to catch you.

Destroyers are nice against footslogging boyz mobs if you concentrate their firepower on one target at a time. Three shots apiece, hitting on 3's and killing on 2's. Use their range and mobility to avoid getting hit.

DO NOT underestimate the Ork charge range, including the use of open-topped wagons and trukks (12" move, 2" disembark, 6" assault) and the Waagh. Be careful with your warriors, especially in a game with objectives.
