Jason Momoa of "Stargate: Atlantis" was cast in the big-time production, since they're going with Howard's original depiction of Conan(lots of corded muscle, decent bulk--but not brutish like Ahnald).

Well, my hope is that he can exceed the legacy of the previous Conan, who I shall post a youtube tribute of him:

Wha?!

I like that they're going for a more faithful rendition of Howard's stories, but they're still making him too much like Arnold. Conan was always depicted as wearing armor.

Still, it'll be hard to be out Arnold in terms of how Conan is seen. I'll still go and see the movie, though.

Conan was depicted as wearing armor for alot of the stories, yeah. But after Vanaheim he traveled clad in nothing but his loincloth till he found a Barrow and looted it

God, I will miss Robert Jordan, who had a hand in creating a new line of Conan stories in the '80s.

His Wheel of Time series was very good and epic. Only got to book 6 though. 10 years has passed and now I forgot the story line. Will have to pick it up again.

I can't read Robert Jordan. It feels too tedious.

But Jim Butcher? Jim Butcher I can finish his books in a day.

The first WoT book is really slow, like Moby Dick slow until about the halfway point and then it just suddenly jumps out at you and makes it hard to put down.

At least for me. Once I got to book 2 I was reading an entire book an evening (900-1000 pages in the paperbacks). It's just the first half of book 1 is tedious.

Are these the original stories? The Robert E. Howard ones? Like the whole Vanaheim thing.

Don't think I've read those.

You must give Robert Jordan praise, as he was able to entwine people into a complex narrative that was very diffiucult to absorb in one reading and painted a picture that gave you every single angle possible of a scene. The man was truly a genius.

Yep!

Conan was involved in a huge border skirmish with the AEsir and Vanir at Vanaheim. He was, before that, involved with a giant Cimmerian horde that came out of the mountains and laid waste to a Gunderland outpost along the Cimmerian border.

In both cases, he wore little to no armor--and following "The Frost Giant's Daughter" and the Vanaheim bits, he got chased by a pack of wolves and came to rest in a barrow with a mummified king which came to life and tried to kill him

I fell asleep trying to read book two. Not even joking, fell asleep in my chair.

I think Jason Momoa is a good choice of actor. He was badass in SG: Atlantis.

I got to the end of the first book, re-read the last chapter a few times, thought 'feth this' and returned it to the library.

Wow. I loved book 2 and it got better as it went on.

I've fallen asleep reading but that's not because a book is bad. Books for me relax my mind and I usually sleep best after reading a good book.

To each his/her own though.

I do not fall asleep when reading a book unless it has not caught my attention. Usually I attempt to stay up way past my normal sleeping hours just to get that next chapter in, right up until I am to the point that I either pass out or find a lull in the action that I deem a good stopping point.

I never once fell asleep reading any of "The Black Company" series.

I open up the second WoT book and man, two chapters in and I am looking at the back of my eye lids. Same thing happens to me with The Dresden Files though, but I think this is different. Like Jim Butcher, but the book is laced with sleeping powder or something. I look at it and fall asleep.....

Is it possible you have narcolepsy?

Because "The Dresden Files" are so unboring I find it hard to fall asleep when reading them

However, if it was "Summer Knight" or "Death Masks", I find it more believable...

As for "The Black Company"---hells yes. I loved Taker.

Gah!

The WoT should have ended at 6 books. WAY too much fluff and filler in there.

After book 5 or 6, you get ENTIRE BOOKS where NOTHING MUCH AT ALL happens!

Pushing it out to 10 or 12 or whatever it ended up at?

Money grab.

Of course, splitting the final book into THREE books?

Ultimate Money Grab.

So anyway....back to Conan.

I think it's going to be pretty hard to replace the legacy of Arnold as Conan. At least for the 30 and over folks. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy they are trying, just as I was happy they rebooted Star Trek (even though I thought the reboot was kind of a failure.) but I don't know............... the original Conan is so iconic it will be a hard thing to match.

Except pretty much anyone who was involved with actually writing/illustrating Conan -hated- the casting of Ahnald.

Conan was meant to be someone whose muscular bulk came from hard labor, not lifting weights. There's a difference between the two that's somewhat readily apparent if you know what you're looking for.

Either way, I'm excited for this as Momoa has proven he can do the stoic guardian from his bit on Stargate: Atlantis.

I'm with you there. I would skip half of a Jordan book with all the control freak women and nanny-panny men.

I can't put down a Jim Butcher novel once I start it.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

I don't think they can reproduce the Teutonic theme of the original. Its what set it apart. Since Conan we've had the hercules/Xena TV series. I think its a meh pass.

As long as it isn't as bad as hercules and xena it should be at least descent.

I want to see lord of the rings meets conan the barbarian.

Whoa whoa whoa.
Hercules was not bad.

Xena, okay I'll give you that.

Hercules though was light-hearted hilarity!

AND it had Bruce Campbell!

So did Xena. He only appeared in 4 more episodes of Hercules(12 vs Xena's 8).

However, he directed 5 more episodes of Hercules than Xena(7 vs Xena's 2).

Yeah, but Xena was...well, it just wasn't that good to begin with.

The Chin can only do so much to make a show not suck, y'know.

I didn't think either was that good to begin with, personally.

My wife, on the other hand, thinks the opposite of you. She thought Xena was the better show.

I was gonna say that the length of their existences would be a determining factor, but they both lasted 6 seasons.

I think it has more to do with Kevin Sorbo v. Lucy Lawless.

Sorbo is, imo, the better actor. He can do all the various wackiness, but he can also be serious.

Plus it doesn't help that with Xena they started doing these weird shows where Xena hallucinated she was in the future as an actress on a show about herself...
