Hi All,

I'm looking to make an SM Scout army, I've become obsessed with the idea of Landspeeder Storms, but I'm struggling with a HQ choice that will fit in (vaguely) with the theme, or perform well with the rest of the list. I've got ~190pts to spare once the following is chosen:

--------------------------------------------------------

TROOPS
Scout Squad
-Combat Blades
-Combi-melta
-Meltabombs

Scout Squad
-Combat Blades
-Combi-melta
-Meltabombs

Scout Squad
-Sgt Telion
-Sniper Rifles
-Missile Launcher
-Camo Cloaks

Scout Squad
-Sniper Rifles
-Missile Launcher
-Camo Cloaks

FAST ATTACK
Landspeeder Storm
-Multi-melta

Landspeeder Storm
-Multi-melta

--------------------------------------------------------

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. My aim isn't to have a store-dominating 'OMG' list, but to have a list that fits together nicely fluff-wise and can at least be semi-competitive.

Thanks all.

I would honestly buy a captain give him a storm bolter and a power fist. And i would stick him in with one of your scout squads. that would be pretty fluffy. maybe they are leading your captain around an objective he has been trying to see. if he is by himself give his ass a jump pack for mobility. and make him annoying to your enemy.

This is one of the problems I've been facing. He can't join the two CC Scout Squads because he can't ride in the Landspeeder Storms, and if he joined either of the other two Scout Squads then he'd be sat redundantly at the back of the board whilst they snipe things.

I had toyed with the idea of a Librarian in Terminator Armour with a Storm Shield, at least he'd be robust enough to walk around by himself... but I'm still not decided.

Master of the Forge with a beamer.

Decent ranged weapon, would help your Telion squad, low enough cost that you could pick up another squad of scouts / storm / scout bikers / whatever.

Scouts are leading him to a downed tank / tech core / whatever when they encounter an enemy force.

Edit: And you can stick him with one of your snipe squads without worry.

Yeah, you must be obsessed if you want to play this army.
I'd consider three Land Speeders to accompany your army.
Keep them hidden or in reserve if the Storms are outflanking.

Hmm, now there's an interesting idea! Y'know, there's so many HQs in C:SM that I'm not sure I've ever even paid attention to Master of the Forge before. I'll get reading immediately! Conversion beamer is that weapon that gets more powerful the further away it is though, right?

Interesting. Cheers, Shrike

In fact, you need an HQ.
Well, a MotF with conversion beamer joining a Sniper squad
(cannot infiltrate them) would be an option.

MotF with coversion beamer on a bike. - and you would still have points left over.

If he was on a bike though he wouldn't be able to seek refuge in cover or join a unit. On the plus side he could repair the speeders I guess. Hmm.

Well, if he would be his own he could be targeted by weapons instantly killing him, like a lascannon.

Find yourself 5 more points spare and take Captain Shrike in one of your Scout squads. Then you'll have a captain with hard hitting ability (and mobility) with a good CC attack

Consider dropping a scout squad to get the MotF on a bike, and take a scout bike squad. The mines could help protect the remaining snipe squad, and the scout bodies absorb a few hits.

hang about!

You shouldn't need scouts with sniper rifles. Just take a captain on a bike and your scouts can all have bikes!

Here's an idea it might mean growing to 1,000 points but take your list add in pedro some sternguard and a drop pod. Now your turn 1 assaulting scouts have 4 attacks each and are supported by the short ranged fire power of the Sternguard. Result is lots of win for you.

Yeah I looked at Pedro - he would've been the perfect HQ if only there was a way to get him up into the action... sadly at 750pts with this list, there isn't. Ahh well.

Sternguard and DP?

You'd have to drop some scouts.

Otherwise I'd be tempted by a shooty Captain or a libby with GoI (so he can support the scouts and get into the actrion).

A Captain is the normal leader of a Scout company.
I wonder that GW has not given special attention to such a Captain.

I don't think it works that way. The line says "space marine bike squads" may be taken as troops, not "scout bike squads." Since those are their official names in the codex it's probably meant to be specific.

"Well, isn't the enemy of your enemy, like, your friend? Or whatever? Can't they team up?"
"Not exactly. In this setting, the enemy of your enemy is still a floating, greasy, armored brain."
"Well, what about his enemy? Maybe you could be friends with him."
"No, because that guy is a mechanical horror in an undying battle shell. He sails from world to world in a flying tomb, serving gods who eat hope."

I think I'm kind of leaning towards the Librarian at this point. The Master of the Forge is ok, and Bolster Defences would be lovely, but I just don't see him doing anything else in the battle.

A Str 8 small blast every turn is ok... but nothing more than ok.

At least a Librarian can be an obstacle for your opponent. Jumping around the place with Gate of Infinity and landing Str 10 AP 1 blasts on people...

Indeed, a Librarian with the mandatory psychic hood can disrupt enemy plans.
But he's not an ideal leader.
How about a Captain on bike and some Scout Bikers?

where am I? *looks around* Well i'm...errr...I...I...don't know!

If you want it to be fluff wise then you could just have a Captain w/ a rhino/razorback and a combat squad as his retinue, it could just be the vanguard of a force led by the captain!

If not then the Libby sounds good.

Thinking on it more, the bike libby or captain with biker scouts seems like it will do you better than Telion. Drop telion and spend the 240 points on a bike HQ and a small retinue.

Remember that Scout Bikers have some special rule that gets lost when a Captain joins them.
But it seems that the highest synergy between an HQ and your fragment of army is reached by this combo.

Telion is staying. Yes he's expensive for this size game, but he's quite important fluff-wise. Also, I really want to see the look on peoples faces when they're special weapons guys bite the dirt before anyone else, hahah!

Your multi-melta scout squad will get blasted to smithereens before they can get close enough to destroy armour.

With all those sniper rifles you haven't really got anything that can take down squads of approaching infantry once they're within rapid fire range.
4 sniper rifles = 4 dead enemy. In an ork squad of 30 that leaves 26 still standing.....
Add in maybe 3 more dead to missile launcher and that's 23 still able to assault you....
